shbooms··on Assassin’s Creed Liberation delisted, unplayable even to owners starting Sept 1
Unfortunately, per Steam's TOS, you do not own anything you "purchase" on their platform. Instead you "subscribe" to access of whatever games/other content you've paid for:

...the rights to access and/or use any Content and Services accessible through Steam are referred to in this Agreement as "Subscriptions."

... The Content and Services are licensed, not sold. Your license confers no title or ownership in the Content and Services.

https://store.steampowered.com/subscriber_agreement

To me, that's their business if they want to operate that way and folks can choose to accept that and be a customer if they so desire. I think what's really wrong is that nowhere on their store pages do they use the word "Subscription" and instead they use the word "Purchase". This should not be allowed and is false advertising, plain and simple.

Steam's TOS pretty clearly states that everything you "purchase" is basically just a licensed subscription to that content.

shbooms··on As TikTok grows, so does suspicion
> As in, there are apparently sub companies, that are in the US, not in china,

Sure, the US "sub companies" are located physically in the US and managed day-to-day by US-based employees but they are still owned by a Chinese parent company meaning at the end of the day, they still report to managers/executive in China and are obligated to follow directions given to them by people working for Chinese parent company. If the Chinese government cotrols the Chinese parent company then they, by definition, control the US-based company as well.

shbooms··on Dear Spotify, can we just get a table of songs?
The worst UI offense to me is the new playlist view that came with their new desktop UI last fall. They went from having seperate columns for Song Title and Artist Name and bundled them into two rows within a single column. Not only does this make scanning through a long list of songs/artists much more difficult, it means they've taken away the ability to sort a playlist by Artist which seems like a major downgrade in my opinion as someone who keeps most playlists sorted by Artist most if not all the time.
shbooms··on Show HN: Prevent your computer sleeping with just a webpage
it's gotten to the point now where laptop manufacturers tell you not to put sleeping/hibernating laptop into a bag at all due to amount of heat they still generate even while sleeping [0]. Only those that are fully shut down should be placed in a bag (according to them).

shbooms··on Raspberry Pi update removes the default user
I still remember the day a young me discovered shodan.io for the first time. before that day, I had no idea just how quick and easy it was for strangers to scan the entirity of the internet and just naively assumed that there was no way anyone could find me or my devices amongst the vastness of the internet. needless to say that was a turning point for me and my security posture when it comes to anything internet-related.
shbooms··on Okta’s Investigation of the January 2022 Compromise
All while happily throwing Sitel under the bus.

This whole communication from Okta is a total debacle. They are trying desperately to under play the event and deflect blame in the poor transparency after the event all while not once mentioning that they plan on making any remediations or changing anything in their day to day operations after this incident to prevent it from happening again.

According Github's site policies [0], they've explicitly outlawed this type of behavior meaning it's their responsibility to police and enforce this by punishing users on their platform who they find to be engaging in it:

"You may not use information from the Service (whether scraped, collected through our API, or obtained otherwise) for spamming purposes, including for the purposes of sending unsolicited emails to users"

shbooms··on Social engineering scam that nearly cost me all of my ETH
true, but if they invited you in and told you had to go stand on a very specfic place in the room, facing a certain direction and to only start eating when they said so, that would be very suspicious and likely result in you opting out.
shbooms··on Wordle Now Redirects to NYT
> there's presumably little/no acquisition value in the eyes of the NYT without this tracking.

I pay their $4.99/month subscription for access to their "Games" package solely because it includes access to their full archive of daily crosswords (going back to 1993).

If they add a similar "archive" of the daily Wordles and allow payed users to replay past puzzles, that could presumably provide new value to them by enticing more paying customers.

shbooms··on I read the federal government’s Zero-Trust Memo so you don’t have to
I think from the viewpoint of a business/enterprise environment, yes you're right, context-aware authorization is a good thing.

But I think the point of your parent comment's reply was that the inevitable adoption of this same techonology in the consumer-level environment is a bad thing. Among other things, it will allow big tech companies to have an stronger grip on what software/platforms are OK to use/not use.

If your employer forces you to, say, only use a certain version of Windows as your OS in order to do your job, that's generally acceptable to most people.

But if your TV streaming provider tells you have to use a certain version of Windows to consume their product, that's not considered acceptable to a good deal of people.

> don’t SmartTV manufacturers make 30% of the profit on a TV from your data?

I'm not sure about all manufacturers but in the case of Vizio, selling user data:

- accounts for 65% of their net profit

- is double the amount of money they make from selling actual TVs

- grew 134% year over year as of Q3 2021

shbooms··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
They actually still offer the DVD service which has a much broader selection (basically any and all new releases just like RedBox plus a lot of stuff from the past 20-30+ years) but it's basically a stand-alone service now that costs between 7.99 - 14.99/month depending on how many simaltaneous DVDs you want to have out and the format (DVD vs Blu-ray)

shbooms··on Poll: Which FAANG is the most likely to decline in the years ahead?
>There was never a time when you could name a film and expect it to be on Netflix to stream.

That's not what your parent comment was suggesting. It was saying that Netflix's streaming collection was the same as Blockbuster's physical DVD collection, which was big but not unlimited (i.e. "every film you can think of")

shbooms··on "Widevine Dump":Leaked Code Downloads HD Video from Disney+, Amazon, and Netflix
It's not just Firefox though, if you're running Chrome on Windows or Mac, you get the same 720p as Firefox.

The only way to get Netflix in high def (1080p and 4k) from a web browser is to use a browser that is made by the same company as the OS it's running on.

e.g.:

- Microsoft Edge running on Windows 10 or 11 (if running Edge on some other OS, output will cap at 720p)

- Chrome running on Chrome OS (if running Chrome on some other OS, output will cap at 720p)

- Safari running on MacOS

In any scenario not listed above, Netflix serves a max of 720p.

it seems like the process has begun for the owner/maintainer to step down:

I haven't found anything else related to this yet (i.e. who will be taking over, if anyone)

shbooms··on Two lines of CSS that will improve HN on mobile (IMO)
`em` is a relative unit that can change depending font-size of the given element while `pt` is an absolute value. the W3C does not recomend using any absolute value such as `pt` for text rendered on screens. only relative values or `px` should be used. [0] I would suggest this very helpful article on the topic, it provides a lot of good info and context on this subject.

shbooms··on I returned my Remarkable2
Per the author in the link you posted, the PineNote appears to still be a prototype in development and does not sound like it's really anywhere close to be competing against the consumer-ready remarkable:

"If you’re looking to buy a PineNote in the first batch, you must expect to write software for it, not to write notes on it. The software shipping from the factory for the first batch will not be suitable for taking notes, reading e-books, or writing your dissertation. It may not even boot to a graphical environment."

shbooms··on Show HN: I made a movie recommendation app based on your mood
it completely ruins my experience as well. When I finish watching something, I want to take time to digest and reflect on what I just saw, to relish in the mood or feeling that I was put in by the show/film, not get mindlessly forced into something new.

I can't stand this whole "engagement" agenda that media/entertainment tech companies are pushing so damn hard down our throats more and more everyday.

removing the catalytic converter essentially renders your muffler useless since it's located in the middle of the exhaust pipe [0]. therefore removing the cat. converter will make your car incredibly loud and virtually impossible to go unrecognized.

> Setting up ergonomic custom keyboard shortcuts is painful and requires (multiple?) third-party applications to do well.

Take a look at Hammerspoon[0] for this if you haven't already. It requires some work to get it working the way want (you'll be writing some basic Lua code) but it's by far the best, all-in-one solution I've found for this problem on macOS. It has a ton of built-in modules for automating things including being to setup hotkeys globally as well as modal/on per-app basis

shbooms··on macOS has become more reliable
I had that same hypothesis as well until recently when I disabled some unnecessary daemons by 1. booting into Recovery with SIP disabled and 2. changing a handful of the /System/LaunchAgents/*.plist files to .plist.bak files, effectively disabling for all future reboots.

Since doing this, I've gone through a few security updates and was expecting the udpates to find that the original .plist files were missing and put them back in, but alas they did not as they remained as is.

shbooms··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
The new Dell XPS's managed to squeeze their camera/mic up above without needing a notch[0]. I'm guessing Apple had the ability to do so too but decided not to either because a.) they're planning on adding FaceID at some point in new models and/or b.) because they're trying to "unify" the design aestethics on macOS and iOS

> Laptops with the camera below the screen tend to have an uncomfortable angle that look sup your nose, and the design suggests that they may be adding Face ID in a future iteration.

I agree it's probably designed with a future FaceID implementation in mind but if this isn't the case, Dell have managed to move their camera back up above the screen on the latest XPS's. In my opinion, this is the best looking option currently:
