shbooms··on Gnome and Mozilla Discuss Proposal to Disable Middle Mouse Paste on Linux
the title contradicts what's in the actual article.

the proposal is to change the default beahvior, not getting rid of the ability outright. as long as they both retain the ability to change the behavior back to how was before, it doesn't seem like this is as dire as the author is trying to make it out.

I sympathize with the idea of having to add yet another setting change to what I'm sure is a long list of configs/settings updates that most of us have to perform everytime we boot up a new system but this is all that it looks like would be the case here if this proposal goes through

shbooms··on X-ray: a Python library for finding bad redactions in PDF documents
often times you will have requirements that the documents you release be digitally searchable and so in these cases, this would not be an option
shbooms··on Brown/MIT shooting suspect found dead, officials say

shbooms··on Original Superman comic becomes the highest-priced comic book ever sold
this is true a lot in the world of paintings. there are regularly auctions where you can buy items "attributed" to (meaning it's speculated but not confirmed) very famous Modern Art painters like Van Gogh, Monet, etc for under $5,000 which, if confirmed, would send the valuation many multiples higher
shbooms··on Yt-dlp: External JavaScript runtime now required for full YouTube support
there was already an attempt to take it down back in 2020/2021 [0]. The DMCA claim's main argument was that ytdl was circumventing Techincal Protection Measures (TPMs) in order to access the content. Thanks to a letter from the EFF [1] which explains how ytdl accesses content in the same way that a browser does (i.e. it does circumvent anything such as DRM), github rejected the takedown.

this is also why ytdl has stood firm in saying they will never attempt to be compatible with anything protected by DRM.

shbooms··on Pi-hole v6
It's completely true.

Looking at Vizio's financial records[0], the numbers make it clear.

They seperate everything into 2 distinct businesses, Device and Platform+.

Device represents their hardware business of selling physical TVs and soundbars. Platform+ covers all of their other "software-related" business, mainly consisting of ad delivery and selling user data to third parties.

2019:

- Device Net Revenue = $1.7 billion

- Device Gross Profit = $125 million

- Platform+ Net Revenue = $63 million

- Platform+ Gross Profit = $40 million

2023:

- Device Net Revenue = $1.0 billion

- Device Gross Profit = -($8.6 million)

- Platform+ Net Revenue = $598 million

- Platform+ Gross Profit = $364 million

So over the course of just 4 years:

- hardware revenue is down 40% and is actually losing money (confirms they are indeed selling the TVs at a loss)

- Ad/user data revenue, however, is up almost ten-fold (+949%)

- total gross profits of the two combined are up over 54%

"Postbox is winding down its operations after being acquired by eM Client"

shbooms··on Using Cloudflare on your website could be blocking RSS users
idk, even that seems too much to me, but maybe I'm just being too senstive.

but like, why is it a website's job to tell me what browser version to use? unless my outdated browser is lacking legitmate functionality which is required by your website, just serve the page and be done with it.

shbooms··on Amazon reveals first color Kindle, new Kindle Scribe, and more
What's the deal with ereaders and their seeming disdain for sane battery life measurements?

Amazon boasts "up to 8 weeks on a single charge" in all their selling points, then, in the fine print states "A single charge lasts up to eight (8) weeks, based on a half hour of reading per day with wireless off and the light setting at 13".

So, it has 28 hours of actual use time, got it. Why not just say that?

shbooms··on "Begin disabling installed extensions still using Manifest V2 in Chrome stable"
I agree that more granular permissions is better (in terms of dictating which sites an extension has access to) but I think the main problem as I understand it is that this is an entirely seperate issue from the one that nukes uBO.

V3 introduces a hard limit on the total number network filters an extension is allowed to set and it's a laughably low number. Far below what uBO uses even on a barebones, default setup

shbooms··on Helping wikis move away from Fandom
Same here.

Prior to my discovery that fandom was bad and a lot of wikis were moving away, I was following so many instances of out dated info in games I was playing due to not realizing that the wiki was no longer maintained since the active contributors had moved elsewhere and updates/patches to the game had rendered the info moot.

shbooms··on Anomalous propagation and the sinking of the Russian warship Moskva
> Wasn't the Moskva spotted by a drone before missile deployment?

Drones were speculated to have been involved but it was said they were used to distract the ship's defense system as the missiles were in the air, not in the initial spotting/targeting. Although I suppose they could've pretty easily done both.

shbooms··on Show HN: Menu Bar Calendar on macOS
+1 for itsycal.

- solid integration with macOS Calendar app (shows all your events and has a "+" option to create new ones)

- can also display a time clock along with the date and also has fully customizable datetime patterns meaning you fully replace the system date/time. I especially love doing this and now being able to just click on the date time in the menubar and see a calendar popup (instead of datetime settings which I never need quick access to) similar to the Windows clock

shbooms··on Apollo’s Christian Selig explains his fight with Reddit – and why users revolted
I can't find the source but in some of the communication Selig released between him and Reddit a few days ago, Reddit themselves confirmed that their pricing is based on lost oppurtunity cost per user, not just expenses
shbooms··on Judge tentatively OKs $725M Facebook settlement: How to apply for a payout
I think GP's point is that the amount of the settlement is not enough given the total number of users involved, rather than the class action itself is insignificant.

In my opinion, in these type of cases, the amount should be directly correlated to how much revenue the company generated from the sale of the data. If the sale of my data is deemed illegal/unethical/etc, then I should reap all financial benefits plus damages.

What's stopping FB from just continuing this practice and just upping their costs to their customers to include this added "cost" of doing business?

shbooms··on TikTok Ban Bill Is Patriot Act 2.0 Trojan Horse [video]
I feel like even that would fall under the umbrella of a desktop app in the context of this asine bill. they didn't say desktop apps with a GUI, just any "app" running on a desktop which I'm sure they would argue includes bash or whatever else you're running as your CLI.
shbooms··on How we turned the tables to catch my sister’s Bumble stalker

shbooms··on Pelé has died
not GP but I do agree to a point that the records of Messi/CR7 at the club level are more impressive than Pele's.

Pele played all his club games in Brazil (18 seasons with Santos) and the US (2 seasons with the Cosmos) where the level of competition was far lower than the likes of the Spanish/English/French leagues (plus the Champions League) that Messi/CR7 play in.

I don't think it's as simple as that though since Messi/CR7 also play with much more talented teammates than Pele did so that factors into things as well.

> Pelé's goal ratio is almost one per match, for 20 freaking years.

Just looking at goal ratio, Messi is pretty comprable here. According to Wikipedia Pele's goal ratio is .93/match over 20 seasons while Messi's is .87/match over 17.5 seasons.

shbooms··on Apple introduces end-to-end encryption for backups
> Got "1234" as a passcode on a long-forgotten family iPad or test iPhone? Better go change it to something secure...

according to the article, I don't think this will be possible because you won't even be able to turn on Advanced Data Protection in this scenario.

"You must also update all your Apple devices to a software version that supports this feature."

Just to get the feature enabled you're going to have to go and "touch" all of the devices you're signed into and either update their OS (and also update their passcode if you're smart) or sign out of them.

shbooms··on NYU Chemistry Professor Fired After Students Said His Class Was Too Hard
> Organic Chemistry 1, 2 and 3 at NYU have always been considered challenging and “weed out”.

It seems this "weed out" culture around orgo is very much an established thing in the world of the sciences/pre-med which is a little strange to someone like me that is not in that world. How come one particular subject is used so universally to weed people out as opposed to just weeding out the bottom x% of people with lowest overall GPA's? Is orgo so much more important to scientists and medical professional compared to other subjects such as biology, anatomy, etc?

shbooms··on Visual Studio Code is designed to fracture
Holy hell, this blog is virtually unreadable. Article content aside, the fact that after pretty much every single paragraph there's 1-2 giant links to some other article and/or an ad is just infurianting and makes it impossible to focus. I stopped reading after the first few and will be adding this site to my blocklist.
