shaunsingh0207··on Apple rumored to subvert EU Rules by nerfing USB-C on iPhone15
Isn't that just USB-PD and QC3? Which apple uses on their desktop products
shaunsingh0207··on Ask HN: What low-tech way do you use to manage competing tasks/to-dos
I have a remarkable tablet (e-ink device), on which I handwrite todo's in a specific file. That file is synced to my computer, on which it gets translated to text and exported to an org-mode file and parsed into my org-agenda. I can then view/complete/index my TODO's both digitially on my laptop/phone, or analogue on my tablet

Not really low-tech, but a lot more physical than pure GTD

shaunsingh0207··on OpenAI is now everything it promised not to be: closed-source and for-profit
It couldn't have, they've mentioned before the change in business model was out of neccessity. I don't think they wouldn've signed away so much of their rights if they didn't really need that azure hardware either.
shaunsingh0207··on The E-Ink Badge
Look into memory reflective lcd's, doesn't look quite like e-ink (and for quite a few of them you have to resort to dithering instead of proper greyscale), but they're considerably cheaper and offer the same power benefits.

Additional benefit is that they're quick to refresh, if you have an application that requires it. I have a calculator built with it, works perfectly.

shaunsingh0207··on Microsoft Kosmos-1: A Multimodal Large Language Model
IQ test, the sat, and exact mathematics are very different fields though. ChatGPT etc. are very good at "emulating" by sheer force and size logic, exact math doesn't work with "emulation"
shaunsingh0207··on Ask HN: What's your favorite rust binaries?
sorry, are you looking for rust crates, rust applications, etc.? I don't think rust is any less cross-platform than the alternatives, its all about what the library itself targets.

Ripgrep has been my favorite example of rust for years now, simple, fast, featureful.

shaunsingh0207··on Why Use Nim over C#?
I'd bet rust is an outlier in that, a lot of languages require more code to do the same things, as a result of being simpler langs (lua). a lot of langs are very easy to shoot yourself with, more lines means more oppurtinity to shoot yourself.

In rust though, that 30 line python script probably takes 45 lines to write now. But those 15 lines aren't wasted or because of longer logic, rather those lines are used to convey type information

its not "more lines = more bugs" as it is "most languages don't put more lines to good use"

shaunsingh0207··on Banning TikTok is not the solution
This is what I've been telling people, and no-one seems to listen.

> (comments) The elephant in the room is psychological impact it has on children.

And instagram reels, youtube shorts, anything can and will take its place. Banning social media outright isn't a good idea either, it can be a very usefull tool if we teach kids how to use it correctly.

The issue isn't social media, its that no-one seems to teach kids how to navigate social media.

shaunsingh0207··on Why Use Nim over C#?
I didn't get why fewer lines of code is better. I don't choose rust because its "shorter", far from it, if anything I choose rust because its very verbose with its syntax, but that syntax conveys a lot of information.

Another comment in the above thread mentioned that "c-like performance is easily reachable with c2nim, or inline assembly" well then thats not really the performance of nim is it, thats the performance of assembly ...

shaunsingh0207··on Black Mesa gets shiny: Free Half-Life ray-trace mod adds subtle splendor
Interesting that this is done through modifying xash3D, rtx remix looked really nice in the demos they gave but sadly they haven't released it to the public quite yet
shaunsingh0207··on Ask HN: Which Android Phone is the least bloated and the most “free”?
As a stock experience, the google pixel phones are unbeatable, pretty much the "reference" edition of android phones. The nothing phone, made by one of 1+'s co-founders, is also fairly clean and has a different set of features.

If you're willing to get your hands dirty, then you can install https://lineageos.org on several brands of phones (https://wiki.lineageos.org/devices/), and if you're willing to ditch android altogether then the grapheneOS project is worth looking into.

The Pixel line of phones supports both lineageOS, grapheneOS, and comes fairly nice stock so I'd wholeheartedly recommend it

shaunsingh0207··on Ask HN: Are FAANG layoffs having an effect on high-profile open source projects?
Quite a few of the FAANG layoffs are from employee retention programs, and a few of these projects were high-profile and open source. The one I'm most interested in is google's fuchsia project, I hope it doesn't lose traction and get killed off.

Firefox's servo research project team was laid off in 2020, and the servo project was branched completely into its own thing. The servo project is still up and kicking with plans for 2023 though.

The layoffs will certainly have an impact, but hopefully nothing substantial

shaunsingh0207··on The Missing Semester of Your CS Education
Every time I'm working on a personal project I boot up neovim and have some fun. I have an extensive neovim (and emacs) configuration.

If I need to do anything in a professional environment, I boot up intellij/vscode/whatever they use and just install a vim emulation plugin. Vim is fun and all, but when time is money the last thing I want to worry about is configuring my editor.

shaunsingh0207··on Learn Vim (2021)
Neovim + lsp (coc.nvim/ale can do this in vim as well)
shaunsingh0207··on Another Round of Layoffs at Meta
VR isn't good at general computing because noone has really embraced the form factor and given it the attention it needs. The issue is, meta is not doing that. Hopefully the upcoming apple ar/XR/vr stuff will be a bit better.

The oculus go failed terribly, because no-one made content for it. Microsoft's attempt at arm laptops failed, because no-one made applications for it. Apple was able to convince people it was worth considering arm, maybe they can get people to consider vr?

shaunsingh0207··on Apple Entertainment Services are slow or down
I was on a camping trip and we used it quite a few times just fine.

I find it weird on this thread and the other AirTags how everyone has such varying experiences with the hardware. My AirTags don't work often, everyone else's are fine. My walkie talkie works, no-one else does ...

shaunsingh0207··on Apple orders entire supply of TSMC's 3nm chips for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs
Anything you have thats missing on spotify? For me one of the killer features of spotify is the ability to view and integrate songs on local/NAS storage into playlists, the few foreign tracks I had ripped worked just fine
shaunsingh0207··on Lush – Lisp-like language for machine learning designed by Yann LeCun
I prefer https://github.com/gilch/hissp, where Hy has to use shims to pretend statements are expressions, Hissp just targets the expression subset in the first place. (though as you mentioned, hy has a lot of literature and support around it, where as you're going to have to find your own way around hissp)
shaunsingh0207··on Testing Raspberry Pi's New Debug Probe
I've switched to using the pine64 boards for exactly that reason. All of the RPI model <X> boards feel like they're targeting hobbyists who want to build a retropi setup or school project and just need working software.

The pine boards are far more open, and the whole company is just "we give you the hardware, you self serve the software". They have a few good "pi alternatives", and some more "exotic" stuff. I've been playing around with their ox64 board and am enjoying it so far

shaunsingh0207··on Apple Makes Major Progress on No-Prick Blood Glucose Tracking for Its Watch
Especially over the last few years around most of the east coast, for me Apple Maps has become far better than google maps for everything, except reviews. Especially for biking and public transport as you said.
shaunsingh0207··on Apple Makes Major Progress on No-Prick Blood Glucose Tracking for Its Watch
I can't speak for the Apple Watch, but the O2/BPM readings on some other watches are often dropped/delayed with the operating system taking priority. I was trying to use the heart rate data for a pet project and found its practically useless, on Samsung's watches its just enough data to show a few fancy numbers and thats about it.

On the contrary, the Apple Watch ECG is quite accurate, not quite enough to replace the system the doctor makes me wear, but enough that apple can get a general idea of any defects and tell you to go to the doctor. The "regular" hear rate sensor isn't anywhere near good enough to be taken seriously, but its leaps ahead my previous samsung.

I dream of the day where my Apple Watch can replace the myriad of annoying wires and sensors I have to wear to monitor myself. Even then, the Apple Watch has greatly helped me out when I've fallen and need assistance, and I've gifted several to my family just in case.

A few yeas back several of them moved to netflix, and a few moved to airbnb and uber. I'm sure google still pays executives well above any other company, the people I knew at the time were fairly inexperienced and new to the field, and from what I heard google seemed to undervalue them relative to what other Bay Area companies were offering at the time.

Of course, this was a few years back, I'm not sure if the landscape has changed now for better or for worse.

shaunsingh0207··on Apple orders entire supply of TSMC's 3nm chips for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs
I tried it for a while, it didn't seem to have all the shows I wanted and the UX was worse than quite a few of the anime piracy sites.

Of course, anime is a bit of an oddball when it comes to piracy sites, the lack of legal enforcement combined with (from what I've noticed) that a disproportionate part of the audience are developers means there are some really good sites out there.

shaunsingh0207··on Mercedes-Benz previews its operating system MB.OS
Anything that doesn't require the processing power can and should still run on the car, brake by wire is totally fine. I just don't mind if my phone has access to a few more sensors here and there, having CarPlay tell me if my tire pressures are low or being able to adjust my EV's profiles from the CarPlay UI would be nice.
shaunsingh0207··on Mercedes-Benz previews its operating system MB.OS
I'm hoping thats what the "apple car" project actually is. Mobile devices are getting very, very powerful. I would love for my phone to handle all the processing for my car in the future.
shaunsingh0207··on Mercedes-Benz previews its operating system MB.OS
I was in the same boat, purchased my car with CarPlay because I thought I'd use it just as often as I do in my last car. MBUX is honestly good enough that I don't bother plugging in my phone, it does everything I want, integrates with the car, and stays out my way.
shaunsingh0207··on Apple orders entire supply of TSMC's 3nm chips for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs
To give a slightly different answer, because they don't need to.

Intel has their own foundry, AMD is quite happy with whats a fairly recent move to 5 nm. Graphics card manufacturers are more concerned with selling off old cards than making new ones.

Apple isn't going to get very good yields out of 3nm and will likely only get to put it in a few products for now, but for a few months they get to say they'll be the biggest baddest company on the block, which is what apple marketing is all about.

Qualcomm gets the entire mobile market either way, and for desktop/server manufacturers apple isn't an option. Apple 3nm doesn't directly compete with amd/intel, so why worry

shaunsingh0207··on Apple orders entire supply of TSMC's 3nm chips for iPhone 15 Pro and M3 Macs
Apple didn't invent much. Quite a bit of their hardware design is inspired by dieter rams, a lot of their software is inspired by similar features from other operating systems. Most recently, the iOS widget system.

What apple does is perfect that design. iTunes didn't invent search-as-filter or the general UI layout, but it certainly perfected it.

100%. I stopped pirating altogether for a few years because everything I needed was conveniently available, at a low price. I've told multiple people that if anime had a netflix equivalent with nice UX, I would happily pay for it.

Sadly now I feel like the UX and recommendation system of netflix/disney/hulu/etc. is genuinely worse than just pirating. I still pay for spotify though, its feature full, fairly cheap, and delivers all the songs in the world into my pocket

shaunsingh0207··on Google stopping coding competitions
I hate how "normal" of a company google is becoming. Closing down services and products not because they aren't profitable, but because they aren't profitable enough. They've really lost their way the last few years.

In the late 2000's/early 2010's, google was pictured as the "fun" place to work. In part due to their coding competitions and the various other events they held for students throughout the year. Everyone I knew wanted to work for google. Now? everyone sees FAANG just the same as any other company.

Most of the people I know who wanted to work at google, and a few that worked at google, now have higher paying, more enjoyable, and more stable jobs elsewhere.
