sharperguy··on I moved my blog from IPFS to a server
I think the main difference between IPFS and bittorrent in terms of usage patterns is that IPFS is being used to host content that could easily by just a regular HTTP server, whereas bittorrent is hosting data which is highly desired and would be impossible or very expensive to host on HTTP.

And so naturally relays pop up, and the relays end up being more convenient than actually using the underlying protocol.

sharperguy··on Gitstr: Send and receive Git patches over Nostr
The main difference with Mastadon is tha with Mastadon you have a single node that you get your federated feed from, and that verifies your identity. Therefore if your node operator doesn't peer with some other node, you wouldn't automatically be able to communicate with users on that node.

With nostr, your identity is just a pubkey, and you can publish to / read from several nodes simultaneously. So if some node refuses to puplish certain content, you can just get it from another node without having to create a whole new identity.

At this point, with any new model I think it makes sense to wait until you can run the model on your own input before making any assumptions based on cherry picked examples.

sharperguy··on A link between low interest rates and low crime (2016)
I believe that many business indeed operate at a loss for extended periods of time, by deliberately spending more money on future developments or obtaining customers than they take in revenue.
sharperguy··on A link between low interest rates and low crime (2016)
If the entire economy is structured around the expectation of low interest rates, then raising interest rates would certainly upset a lot of plans. Many businesses would find they could not afford to employ as many people as expected. Many employees would find not only that they had lost their jobs, but also wasted many years training for a job that no longer exists.

Those who invested in affected businesses or capital goods with inflated prices due to easy credit will find those investments collapsing in value.

Eventually, the economy could restructure into a more sustainable form, where investments, business sizes and training were aligned with the new state of the economy. But a pain period is not really avoidable, other than by relowering interest rates. The longer interest rates are kept low, the longer and more painful the transition.

sharperguy··on Open-Source AI Is Uniquely Dangerous
You could replace "AI model" with "computer". With an "unsecured computer" you could write a virus, or design a detonator switch for a bomb, or publish copyrighted material. Clearly we need to limit the sale of unsecured computers and estaplish liabilities for manufacturers whose customers enguage in these actions.
sharperguy··on Spot Bitcoin ETF receives official approval from the SEC
Given that he didn't provide any further evidence to his claim, I think it seems reasonable to guess that might have been an attempt.
sharperguy··on Spot Bitcoin ETF receives official approval from the SEC
I won't argue what is going to happen. I do think if bitcoin were to go this way it would lose most of its fundamental value. As border restrictions, sanctions, KYC, tracking are all applied to the institutional coin, there would be little advantage in comparison to other instruments which generate yield or are more liquid.

In such a world the demand for a truly sovereign bitcoin would still exist, although using it may be out of reach for most, depending on how things play out.

The battle is on, in terms of finding ways to scale bitcoins sovereign transaction limit, and find ways to transact that can't easily be prevented with the wave of a regulator's pen.

sharperguy··on Copyright is not a moral right, it's a monetization strategy
Currently due to copyright enforcement, alternative distribution methods such as torrenting are being made as inconvenient as possible to use. If legal enforcement was relaxed, there would quite quickly be some really nice convenient apps and probably a healthy level of competition and interoperability.
sharperguy··on Midjourney developers caught discussing laundering, creating database of Artists
Don't really care about comercial products like midjourney. Open source models are the future, and improving them will benefit all humanity, unless they are hobbled by restrictive copyright lawsuits, forcing everyone underground who isn't a massive corporation with a huge team of lawyers.
sharperguy··on Copyright is not a moral right, it's a monetization strategy
As a consumer why would I pay spotify $15 a month for ripped off content that doesn't even go to the artist, when I can just paypal my favourite artists $5 now and again, giving them infinitely more revenue from me than spotify does even now, while I torrent/share/sample/remix/cover their entire collection?

sharperguy··on Xbox's new policy – say goodbye to unofficial accessories from November
The only real solution to the cheating problem would be to get rid of automated matching systems and go back to moderated gaming rooms where there is always a human who can decide if they think someone is cheating and boot them.

You do lose a lot of features that way though, such as a reliable global ranking, since it would be easy to create a room with only your friends and allow eachother to rank up quickly.

It's also a huge coordination issue if you want to arrange a game of 50-100 players who aren't all total strangers to eachother.

But the alternative seems to be in stripping the ancient practice of gaming of its social functions and turning it into a faceless slot machine where the only goal is to win enough times to increase a mostly meaningless number on a screen.

sharperguy··on Show HN: An app to create asynchronous micro podcasts
I could see it working a bit better if the original podcast had fixed points where they allow comments. So they can say something like "ok now we will open this section up for comments, and afterwards we'll continue on to...".

Then as comments come in they can follow a dialog structure, or the original poster can come in and add some clarification as a reply.

edit: If there are a lot of comments coming in, you could set it to autoplay only the top X comments and their replies or whatever.

For reviewing afterwards, it would also be really helpful to have an auto transcription so you can quickly scroll through for anything you missed or want to go back to.

sharperguy··on Gnu/Hurd strikes back: How to use the legendary OS in a (somewhat) practical way
People are missing the point of being asked here.

If "fun" and "idological reasons" are the reason there is a community around the project, then that is in fact the answer to the question, if a little vague.

For people still not understanding, it would be nice to have an explanation of what people find fun about it, especially as a user and not a developer, and what ideological reason exactly are driving it.

sharperguy··on Oregon decriminalized hard drugs – early results aren’t encouraging
I always thought decriminalization was in some ways the worst of both worlds. On one hand, keeping the production and trade side illegal continues to perpetuate the underground culture and fund international cartels. Meanwhile their market base increases due to fewer people being afraid of being caught, the product quality is still completely unregulated. Users still need to stay embedded in an an unscrupulous underworld in order to maintain the connections necessary to obtain the product, increasing the chances of abuse and reducing their chances of getting help if they need it. Of course, it's nice not to send people to jail for small quantities, but failing to fully legitimize the market in these ways could cause a lot of other issues.
sharperguy··on Important Coding Habits
I think regular sports involving use of muscles really helps with this. Either weight lifting, with an emphasis on squats and deadlifts, bouldering, certain forms of yoga, calisthetics etc. Keeping your overall muscles strong supports the rest of your body throughout the day while you work.
sharperguy··on You're So Vain, You Probably Think This App Is About You: On Meta and Mastodon
I think the architecture of mastadon unintentionally encourages this.

When you follow someone on a peered instance, the instance you use must store and forward their posts to you. So if an instance contains mostly content you find disagreeable you may not want to have those on your server.

Also if you go to the "global" timeline, you will see posts from all instances which are peered with your instance. So the operators of your instance might not want to "pollute" that timeline with content from instances they find disagreeable.

I prefer the alternative architecture used by the nostr protocol. There, your account is not tied to a relay, but to a public key which is used to verify everything you post. You can send your posts to multiple relays which can then be read by anyone who chooses to pull from there.

This allows relays to freely block/curate content in the way they like without restricting the freedom of their users to pull content from other sources.

Currently, the network is in its infancy, and is mostly populated by bitcoiners, since this is the community where the protocol grew out of. But there is no reason why it can't eventually grow far beyond that, for those with no interest in that topic.

sharperguy··on Cory Doctorow: Platform Capitalism and the Curse of “Enshittification” [audio]
I don't think I can do justice to the entire topic on here so I will just point to this small part of your reply:

> pushing out small businesses from every town

Those small businesses are also run on a for profit basis and are market driven. If there is something causing them to fail despite providing a better quality of service then perhaps we are still looking at market distortions rather than a fundamental failing of capitalism.

sharperguy··on Cory Doctorow: Platform Capitalism and the Curse of “Enshittification” [audio]
I think the issue could be rooted in recent monetary policy rather than an inhrenent feature of the market itself.

Artificially low interest rate environments lead to a lot of money in the hands of investors, which due to inflation slowly loses purchasing power over time. However, with large reserves, they can easily afford to prop up a business model which persistantly spends more money on bringing "free" features to user while charging very little. Those businesses obviously outcompete any business which do not recieve such investment.

However, as time goes on, those investments must eventually earn a return. Switching from a model which loses money every year to one which must profit every year is invariably going to affect the quality of the product. Especially in an environment where directly charging customers for your service would be a death sentence.

In the absense of such cheap credit, however, a truly competitive environment could potentially emerge, where businesses must be sustanably profitable from the ground up. Esentially this would mean the last 15 or so years has been wasted time in pursuit of this goal, as false monetary signals were steering us in completely the wrong direction.

Some of todays tech companies may survive the transition, but I believe that most will eventually be replaced by completely new ones. Unless we go back to a policy of lowering interest rates to near (or even below) 0%.

sharperguy··on Reddit’s blackout protest is set to continue indefinitely
Nice thing about nostr is your account isn't tied to a server. The servers are just relays, and your messages are authenticated via pgp key. So your client will present you with a default set of servers, and if you need to change it later you don't need to recreate an account to do so, just tweak a setting.

The nostr community right now mostly want to replace twitter rather than reddit, but in principle it would be possible.

sharperguy··on Ask HN: Alternatives to Reddit
I see reddit less as a website and more as a collection of communities. Each community has its own set of reasons for hosting itself on reddit vs other locations. Therefore I would predict that in the absence of reddit, not every community would move to the same place.

I also noticed that in recent years many subreddits have increasingly been taken over by memes and other low quality posts and so users looking for more substantial content have already moved elsewhere.

But some others have still been the best places to get early information on certain topics. For example /r/stablediffusion had a lot of people posting their novel uses and techniques for image generation. The QR code topic which is now blowing up here was already being talked about on reddit a week ago.
