sharperguy··on Why old games never die, but new ones do
Imagine if copyright actually had a reasonable time limit.
sharperguy··on Hyperscaling Have I Been Pwned with Cloudflare Workers and Caching
Is it really cloudflare doing this or endless bot attacks making these kind of tools necessary?
sharperguy··on A New ASN.1 API for Python
They should just distribute it in some kind of bytecode compiled language with JIT VM like java. Then at least it will be cross platform.
sharperguy··on Nvidia on NixOS WSL – Ollama up 24/7 on your gaming PC
The clue seems to be "on your gaming PC". Many linux users still run Windows on their gaming machines due to compatibility. This would also probable be their device which has the most powerful GPU.
sharperguy··on Show HN: Duolingo-style exercises but with real-world content like the news
Hmm, embedded youtube videos just do not work for me anymore. Maybe because I have too many privacy extensions enabled in firefox. I just get the "sign in to prove you're not a bot" message, and no way to sign in except manually opening youtube and trying to find the same video.
sharperguy··on Show HN: Back to one-time end-to-end encrypted anonymous chats in 2025
It's clear to me that the criticism is coming from people who had never used omegle. While it's all valid, it was extraordinarily popular anyway.
sharperguy··on Florence bans key boxes, a symbol of overtourism
Certainly true for the historical center of Prague, but outside of that, it's a very modern city with many amenities and a great culture.
sharperguy··on Promising results from DeepSeek R1 for code
We had a huge boom due to the low interest rates allowing businesses to pay developers with borrowed money, effectively operating at a loss for years on the basis of future growth. Now interest rates have risen the need to actually be profitable has caused a lot of optimization and lower hiring overall.
sharperguy··on Ross Ulbricht granted a full pardon
An example of someone who could be pardoned would be someone committing an act of violence towards police to prevent them from enforcing a law which was later considered to be unjust and worthy of revolt against.
sharperguy··on TikTok goes dark in the US
It's more like, if China started their own news network and American citizens began to prefer it over CBS, NBC and FOX because of the extremely shoddy level of content available on those local networks.
sharperguy··on Developer wrote 25k lines of Neovim plugin code using phone and touchscreen
Do you use a special keyboard app too, or just the default one?
sharperguy··on Developer wrote 25k lines of Neovim plugin code using phone and touchscreen
I wonder what keyboard he is using? I use Thumb-Key which is a very unorthodox keyboard layout which I find speeds up things like typing special characters needed for coding. I can use vim decently well but I wouldn't develop anything that large with it.
sharperguy··on Webvm: Virtual Machine for the Web
Linux was just an electron app this whole time anyway.
sharperguy··on Adventures in algorithmic trading on the Runescape Grand Exchange
I used to wake up before school, dump my entire stack of gold on the GE for bones (just the regular ones) at a few gp below average price. By the end of the day the order would usually be fulfilled. Then I'd dump them back on the market at a few gp above average price and it would be fulfilled by the morning.

Most days it would net me a small profit, ocasionally prices would fall slightly throughout the day and I'd lose a little, but equally some days it would rise and I'd make extra.

sharperguy··on We need more zero config tools
or just ask them to install nix and temporarily import your entire setup to their machine
sharperguy··on Releasing everyone's SSN and the hacks used to acquire them
maybe we will finally switch to asymetric key auth
sharperguy··on Core Python developer suspended for three months
Absolutely nothing at all. I just cannot make a judgement without seeing what was actually said.
sharperguy··on Core Python developer suspended for three months
I wouldn't assume anything without seeing direct quotes.
sharperguy··on Age is a simple, modern and secure file encryption tool, format, and Go library
I have been using agenix and it is very helpful. I am also looking into writing a system module that makes it easy to generate secrets on the fly.

A lot of secrets are just things like, backend and frontend of some service need to be configured with matching keys, but are both running on the same device. In that case you could have a systemd service which just generates a new random key if it doesn't already exist, and then ensure that the dependent services wait for that service to complete. That way you don't have to store anything in git for those at least.

sharperguy··on Age is a simple, modern and secure file encryption tool, format, and Go library
With agenix, you can encrypt your secrets, such as API keys, and have them stored in your git repo alongside the system configuration (which in nixos is just a bunch of text files). Then you only need to provision the server with the ed25519 private key corresponding to the pubkey the files were encrypted with, and agenix will automatically decrypt the files on boot and place them in /run/agenix, with the specified access permissions.
sharperguy··on Lisbon, a city dying from its own success
What we are seeing here, and in many other cities across the world, reminds me of the Cantillon effect[1].

Basically, businesses which are in closer economic proximity are receiving the benefits of inflationary monetary policy sooner. This leads to higher wages for their employees, and higher profits for the B2B business partners, slowly spreading the new money out into the economy.

This seems to be leading to large gluts of artificially wealthy people in some areas, bidding up prices in their local economy, and then searching for areas to move into where the effect of the recently printed money hasn't taken hold yet.

The result of this would be a shift in those new economies to cater for the influx of new money coming from the newcomers, and away from dealing with locals who, for the most part, are yet to receive any of this money. And when they finally do begin to have wage increases, even more money has been created flowing at a greater rate to the newcomers.

sharperguy··on Researchers cracked an 11-year-old password to a $3M crypto wallet
Bitcoin has a locktime opcode[1] which allows you to set a time when the transaction output can be spent, effectively locking the funds irrevocably for a fixed amount of time.

sharperguy··on Carmakers Will Give Your Location to Police Without a Warrant, Senators Say
It's not just hard. It's suspicious in and of itself, and it supports terrorism/climate change/fraud/hackers/sex traffickers etc etc.
sharperguy··on Turn Your Android Tablet into an IDE with VSCode and Nix
There is also nix-on-droid[1] which is a fork of Termux allowing you to manage your environment with nix (similar to home-manager[2])

sharperguy··on Take a look at Traefik, even if you don't use containers
This is one area where I've found nixos to be really helpful. I can set this up with just adding some lines to the configuration.nix (which uses lego(1) and letsencrypt in the backend):

  security.acme = {
    acceptTerms = true;
    defaults.email = "admin-email@provider.net";
    certs."mydomain.example.com" = {
      domain = "*.mydomain.example.com";
      dnsProvider = "cloudflare";
      environmentFile = "/path/to/cloudflare/password";
    };
  };

  services.caddy.enable = true;

  services.caddy.virtualHosts."subdomain1.mydomain.example.com" = {
    extraConfig = ''
      reverse_proxy 127.0.0.1:1234
    '';
    useACMEHost = "mydomain.example.com";
  };

Configuring with nginx is also fairly similar I think.

sharperguy··on Take a look at Traefik, even if you don't use containers
I've often resorted to just looking through the project on github and finding whatever source file is responsible for parsing the configuration files to figure out what each option does.
sharperguy··on The U.S. government may finally mandate safer table saws
A seatbelt is a small fraction of the total cost of a car. I wouldn't be surprised if a table saw with this feature is 10x the cost of one without it or more. It adds a ton of complexity to a fairly simple tool.
sharperguy··on ActivityPub/Nostr/At-Bluesky Compared
I think it's more of an arcitectural issue. If you were a node operator, would you peer with a dedicated racial hatred AP node? What if a small minority of your users complained that you blocked it.

With something like nostr, you are free as a relay operator to block whatever makes you feel uncomfortable, while users can just get that content from some other relay without having to create a new account and move their entire social graph over.

sharperguy··on YAMLScript – Program in YAML
Would love if there were more parsers for nix lang to turn them into language specific datastructures. E.g. rust serde for nix. Nix covers much of the same features as YAML but is intentionally Turing complete.
sharperguy··on Google helped destroy adoption of RSS feeds (2023)
It was the perfect execution of Microsoft's "embrace, extend and destroy" tactic. Another example was ditching XMPP support in google chat / hangouts.
