sharkmerry··on Scott Adams has died
Apparently there isnt much to back that up.

Writing in the 1990s and 2000s, author Albert Jack[18] and Messianic minister Richard Pustelniak,[19] claim that the original meaning of the expression was that the ties between people who have made a blood covenant (or have shed blood together in battle) were stronger than ties formed by "the water of the womb", thus "The blood of the covenant is thicker than the water of the womb". Neither of the authors cites any sources to support his claim.[18][19]

sharkmerry··on How the US Postal Service reads terrible handwriting
Recently sent mail with Tropical Coast font for addresses. Some got there in a couple days. Some are trickling in 2 weeks later. I was guessing, the auto sorter failed on a few and they had to be manually read.
sharkmerry··on Show HN: Calculator for US individual income tax, from 1970-present
It actually wasnt taxes with health insurance. They froze wages during ww2 but exempted health insurance from the cap.

Same result. different cause (in this case)

sharkmerry··on The explosion in stablecoins revives a debate around “free banking”
> I'm assuming these stable coins aren't actually backed by $150bn in actual USD,

Maybe I am missing something, how is this different than banks employing fractional reserve banking?

>> I don't understand that opening at all. We all want to get on so we get space in the overhead bins, don't we?

I think most are doing it for the overhead space, which leads to my misunderstanding. Why did they charge for checked bags. Its the more time-consuming option, who would pay for that.

they should be charging for overhead and offering checked bags for free. Pay for the time-saving

>> According to the FBI homicide stats for US, 297 people were murdered by a rifle in 2018 in the US.

Holy misleading data excerpts batman...

there were 10k homicides by gun, but you choose 1 type of gun and not the most common.

2014 - 2018 knives 1545 -> 1515 Blunt objects 431->443 Hands, feet 668->672 Guns 7803->10265

>> I'm talking about regular folks that chose the rental market as more risk-adverse investors and maybe put all their savings into a single property that they fixed up and are maintaining themselves.

I think more risk-averse people would avoid a single property as their entire investment portfolio.

Everyone says "diversify" your investments. if you are more-risk averse, you should not be putting all your money into 1 bet or 1 property.

sharkmerry··on Why didn’t auto-braking stop these crashes?
OPs point was tesla drivers are more likely to use the features. More cars being sold by other brands, could refute that but it doesnt necessarily. Its about the rate of usage of the software X total sales X avg. miles driven

sharkmerry··on Adult Obesity Facts
the first line on the link is a little more clear

> The US obesity prevalence was 42.4% in 2017 – 2018.

sharkmerry··on Adult Obesity Facts
Is this solely done based on BMI? Some of you may know that BMI can be wildly inaccurate. (this guy is technically obese on BMI scale - https://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=153207891)

I wonder if we would find better connections between disease and "weight" with body fat % or similar measure.

sharkmerry··on With No Hope of Real Profits, Uber and Lyft Double Down on Fake Profit Metrics
Did you research before asking "which cities didn't?" Or only after I replied?

"Denver taxi medallions" seems to return nothing indicating they have one.

Los Angeles doesn't seem to have one either

sharkmerry··on 1 out of every 153 American workers is an Amazon employee
> The US has a population of 261 million and an employed non-farm workforce of 145 million, per the BLS.

>According to the most recent US employment report, there are 145.8 million nonfarm payroll workers out of a total population of 332 million.

ignoring the mismatching "Populations". (261 million seems to be "Civilian noninstitutional population")

This [0] seems to say there are 152,283,000 employed in US.

are there really ~6.4 million people working on farms in US? i thought farm work was <1% of employed peoples.

sharkmerry··on France Gave Teenagers $350 for Culture. They’re Buying Comic Books
> But the focus on comic books reveals a subtle tension at the heart of the Culture Pass’s design, between the almost total freedom it affords it young users — including to buy the mass media they already love — and its architects’ aim of guiding users toward lesser-known and more highbrow arts.

Seems they could have made the items they wanted to guide users towards free or cheaper, rather than handing out money and hoping

> Noël Corbin, a Culture Ministry official who oversees the project, said the pass gave France’s newly minted adults a way of looking up nearby cultural offerings — the app has a geolocation feature — and encouraged them to indulge their cultural passions.

Manga may not be for everyone, but is this not part of their cultural passions?

sharkmerry··on Show HN: Drop-in audio & video chat for remote teams

sharkmerry··on When tipping and smiling are both expected at work, so is sexual harassment
it seems you're saying that since this wont stop all harassment, its not worth the try? since we'll "have to accept grumpy service workers."

>> So does this mean expecting service with a smile is a bad thing?

no, it means "requiring" or asking for someone to smile is a bad thing when you are holding the power of their income (tip) in your hands. Remove tipping, less power for the customer to tell the server what to do/how to actq

sharkmerry··on Stripe rescinded my signed offer due to changing company priorities
Just a note, "right to work" and "at-will" are different

A “right to work state” is one in which the state has the authority to decide whether employees can be required to join a labor union as a condition of their employment.

California is an at-will employment state. At-will employment means that an employer can fire an employee for any reason or at any time.

sharkmerry··on Five Oregon counties vote to leave state, create 'Greater Idaho'
> it's probably less crazy than having almost 40 million people be represented by just 2 senators when Wyoming has the same number of senators for barely half a million people.

This was purposely the design of the Senate. This complaint should be more applied to the House, where we stopped increasing the number of reps as population grew

sharkmerry··on The Killer SF DA
> To back up his claim that decarceration doesn’t threaten public safety, Boudin boasted that, “Our year-to-year data show that through April, the city and county crime rate has fallen.” To be sure, the period between mid-March and the end of April, representing the most severe seven weeks of total lockdown in the city, did show a trail off in criminal activity. Unfortunately for Boudin, time didn’t stop on April 30. I doubt he still wants to brag about his city’s crime statistics.

> Compared to the prior year, homicides increased 32%, burglaries 49%, and motor vehicle thefts 35% in 2020 according to SFPD statistics.

Seems Chesa was speaking of overall crime rate. From the dashboard linked, SF overall crime rate is down 24.5% in 2020, compared to 2019.
