sharkmerry··on Grubhub stock halted after report Uber is eyeing a takeover
what an awesome idea. wonder if someone has done it for other areas
sharkmerry··on Grubhub stock halted after report Uber is eyeing a takeover
Grubhub deductions were 64% of the gross. But "promotions" was 231$ which is 22% of gross. Promotions are discounts offered by the restaurants.

edit: reading further, grubhub auto-opts in the restaurants into this promotion. That's scummy, but also exists due to US auto opt-in. I believe in Europe, this wouldnt fly as they need you to explicitly opt-in, not explicitly opt-out after they implicitly opt-in. Scummy, but the american way

edit2: i think the verge, incorrectly reported in late march that restaurants "must" opt-in. from the perks program T+C. "Your participation in the Perks10 Program (the “Program” formerly known as “Supper for Support”) is optional. By electing to opt in each restaurant location identified to the Program, "

so 42% for both "advertising/marketing" (grubhub is providing the order to the restaurant). and delivery. If you link to grubhub from your restaurant's website. The advertising/marketing fee is waived

sharkmerry··on Instagram no longer allows people without an account to view photos on computers
I just noticed this a few days ago when checking a friend's dog feed. If you open in private window it still seems to allow. (browse normal to instagram, right-click, open in new private window tab)

Do we really need to be helping out Airbnb hosts? maybe im just being short-sighted
sharkmerry··on Airbnb Racks Up Hundreds of Millions in Losses Due to Coronavirus
Airbnb and VRBO have similar revenues (~2.6 billion). So im not sure the hosts will be out of options, but you aren't wrong that a ton of mortgages could be foreclosed due to the lack of revenue for hosts for the foreseeable future

sharkmerry··on Why did I wake up before my alarm clock went off? (2015)
>> A couple of days ago I lay in bed thinking “the alarm is just about to go off” and then a second later it did go off and I thought “how come I woke up just before the alarm went off?”

What is the alarm like? A beep every 10 seconds? I dont follow how a consistent sounds would not be recognized.

This seems to posit. Alarm is recognized by the brain, he then has enough time to have a conscious thought but then the ears arent passing the signal they've already received, (which triggered the wake up), to the brain to "hear" it?

Does this happen to anyone else? I've never heard of it before

sharkmerry··on A high school student created a fake 2020 candidate. Twitter verified it
I understand why they dont want to use officially filed candidates (though i personally, think they should).

Checking for an ID for someone getting a blue checkmark seems like an easy start though.

sharkmerry··on Tesla Autopilot tricked into accelerating from 35 to 85 mph with modified sign
>> we're still left with the fact that people unintentionally accelerate their vehicles all the goddamn time.

Again, do they do this by 50+mph ALL THE GODDAMN TIME?

>> If a machine does it once in a while, that's not a regression, that's the baseline.

If all the machines do it at once though? The impact of self-driving failing is a lot more than 1 person, typically.

Also, we dont know the rate of error. There are 1.2 Billion drivers in the world. 3.5 Billions smartphone users. Its safe to say 50% of drivers use GPS. So 600 Millions Drivers using GPS? There arent even 1 million Tesla's on the road yet and they are already having incidents.

sharkmerry··on Tesla Autopilot tricked into accelerating from 35 to 85 mph with modified sign
But in these examples, would AI driving not fail there too? Heres an example of AI driving into a river https://electrek.co/2019/03/10/tesla-crash-river-claim-unint... so it happens as well.

would you be fooled by the attached image in my previous comment? If you were fooled, would your default action be to accelerate by 50mph, when no other drivers are?

sharkmerry··on Tesla Autopilot tricked into accelerating from 35 to 85 mph with modified sign
>> Humans fucking drive straight into lakes because the map told them to.

I had to check if this was real or just a bit from the office that imprinted. Googling "humans drive into lake" only finds one incident. Which occured at midnight.[1]

and if you look at the research, they didnt convert it into an 8, they simply extended the middle part of the 3 a little bit [2]

sharkmerry··on Can you legally refuse to pay resort fees?
I dont think you can refuse these, but I've never tried.

I believe they came about as a result of the Online Travel Agencies (OTAs). The hotel doesnt have to split any of the resort fee with the OTA, unlike the the room rate.

sharkmerry··on Costco Capitalism
Its far but the business center in South SF is wonderful in the mornings. They open at 7 and its basically a ghost town.
sharkmerry··on Robotic submarine snaps images at foundation of Antarctic glacier
Joke? I think they just store locally on the rover and then retrieve it. They have a picture on the right with the Icefin labeled "after last dive"
sharkmerry··on The Disneyfication of a University
It is the norm, but the author is questioning the effectiveness.

Also, your summary hit the nail well but missed,

>A select group of faculty and staff, those identified as opinion leaders, are being offered all-expenses paid trips to the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando “to gain first-hand insight into Disney’s approach to culture.”

Which makes the situation more insidious.

sharkmerry··on Global warming is speeding up Earth‘s ocean currents
hadn't heard that as the reason...

In 2005, the National Academies of Sciences published a pamphlet that expressed the viewpoint that “climate change” was a more scientifically comprehensive description of what was happening to the planet. “The phrase ‘climate change’ is growing in preferred use to ‘global warming’ because it helps convey that there are changes in addition to rising temperatures,” it said.[1]

sharkmerry··on A Dog of Flanders
Im curious why such a sad book caught on as a "children's classic". Does anyone know the story behind how?
sharkmerry··on Home Price-to-Income Ratios
It drives home prices up by reducing velocity of home sales because people can afford to stay longer without higher taxes.

The issue that seems to have developed is that towns are building commercial property, as it brings in sales taxes or payroll taxes which total a lot more than property taxes

sharkmerry··on U.S. wants the EU to accept chemical-washed chicken as part of trade deal
Some stats.

EU - ~500 Million people. "In the EU, over 91,000 salmonellosis cases are reported each year." [1]

US. ~330 Million People. "CDC estimates Salmonella bacteria cause about 1.35 million infections, 26,500 hospitalizations, and 420 deaths in the United States every year. Food is the source for most of these illnesses." [2]

sharkmerry··on (SF Bay Area related)BART not responsible for safety of passenger on platform
> Under California case law, Tucher said, “standing on a BART platform waiting for a train to arrive does not establish that the carrier, before it has taken affirmative steps to accept a passenger onto a train,

Im confused. With BART, once you are on the platform, you have scanned in and begun to pay. If you scan right back out in the same station, they charge you. If they have taken your money and you are somewhere you cant get to without paying, I think the "ride" has begun
