sharkmerry··on No excess deaths in Sweden compared to the last ten years
Technically yes, but dividing by number of days past and multiplying by total in the year you get ~88,411, so technically under.

they also noted this "Sweden was the Nordic country that reported the highest number of COVID-19 deaths in 2020."

I think OP was saying if you want to make a dent, it has to be available to those that need it, not just those that can afford it

sharkmerry··on 'Zoom towns' are exploding in the West
They self-admittedly have a unique set of resources.

Natural Resources Fresno County is unique among California counties in the range of natural resources (forests, riverways, and wildlife habitats) that encompass its vast terrain.... Two major rivers, the Kings and San Joaquin, flow through this rich landscape, providing the County with its most prized resource, water.[0]

>The reason Utah was so good at dealing with homelessness was a strong coupling between the Mormon church providing social services, the police departments being lenient with the homeless, and the local governments helping to redirect the homeless to the church (social) services.

> When a new mayor was elected and a new person became police chief this balance was shaken up and the whole system came apart, so now our homelessness problem is about as bad as everywhere else.

You listed 3 reasons, 2 of which has to do with the church, the third reason changed with new mayor, so now it all fell apart?

What happeneded to the mormon social services? Were they not successful without the local government redirecting people to the church services (which should be illegal?, separation of church and state)

sharkmerry··on The N95 mask shortage America can't seem to fix
> I think it largely confirms the point of my post though - we need independent certification labs in the US to make imported PPE usable. It is unclear what % of reported quality failures in that report were due to counterfeits. Now that the manufacturers have authenticity codes on their product we can hold manufacturers directly accountable for filtering performance.

I agree, but we've seen that be corrupted by profit-seeking

sharkmerry··on The N95 mask shortage America can't seem to fix
Kn95's are being tested it seems, and they are failing..

─ ECRI testing of imported FFRs has revealed that 60-70% provide only sub-95% filtration performance. ■ This trend aligns with what NIOSH has found through their own testing; as of September 2, 2020, 53% of the 358 FFR models tested did not meet N95 filtration requirements

sharkmerry··on The N95 mask shortage America can't seem to fix
Difference is where they are certified. https://coronavirus.health.ok.gov/kn95s

there are articles abound when you google "kn95" of up to 70% being not up to snuff

sharkmerry··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
What are you trying to imply here?

This is about income tax. 6% on someone making 13mill (2020$'s) a year seems fine

sharkmerry··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
>>I'll keep the "unproductive" savings, thanks.

You're sitting on greater than 50 million dollars? That what a wealth tax would most likely target

sharkmerry··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
Assume 0.1% wealth tax applied after 1 billion in wealth.

Sell your startup for 1billion.

Put it into market returning 7% for 60 years.

You'll pay 779 Million in taxes.

Your money will earn nearly $50 billion in that time.

That is 1.51904% of your wealth.

sharkmerry··on Modeling a Wealth Tax
>35% of the Forbes 400 list was born into a middle class or lower household.

Just to provide a little more clarity. Those numbers are from 2012. In 1997, 31% were in born "in the batters box"

However, there is a wide range of circumstances in the batter box. Defined as: "individuals and families whose parents did not have great wealth or own a business with more than a few employees."

Perhaps we differentiate on self-made, but some of those 35% I would not consider self-made either.

sharkmerry··on Trump: 'A lot of people' think Edward Snowden 'not being treated fairly'
Respectfully, there are a couple examples of loaded-ness in your original comment.

>> Clinton's de-endorsement was probably not genuine

From the article you linked, this is what she said "Although Clinton had traveled the world in support of TPP as President Barack Obama’s secretary of state, she told the “PBS Newshour” that the final agreement didn’t meet the “high bar” she set for the pact."

Sounds like she still liked the idea, but the agreement wasnt to her liking.

>>My main point is that an issue that was popular on the left (enough for Clinton to flip-flop on) seems to now be mostly the voices of the left criticizing the withdraw.

Again, if more info came out and people changed their mind, you seem to be villifying it and declaring it a "left" problem. (which it may be, but you're asserting with an anecdote on what you've noticed)

sharkmerry··on Trump: 'A lot of people' think Edward Snowden 'not being treated fairly'
Changing your mind or evolving your opinion is just "flip-flopping"?

>>On a per hour basis, my current job pays 95% of the non-union position, but the main difference is 7.5 hours vs. 8 hours a day. That means my yearly salary is more like 87%.

Over your career, doesnt getting raises matter more than immediately more money that will never increase? and without a union could be ended at anytime.

Over a 25 year career, assuming 3% raises, you make 30% more. Plus you worked 3125 hours less.
