shapov··on Vice Media Lays Off 155 Employees with Deepest Cuts in Digital Group
They have a self-titled TV show on HBO/Showtime. I am assuming that's considered non-digital media.
shapov··on This Page is Designed to Last
Fonts disappearing is not a big issue that will ultimately render your page useless. If the font is gone, the look of the page is slightly affected, but the content of the page remains. It's honestly not a big deal at all.
shapov··on Facebook has struggled to hire talent since the Cambridge Analytica scandal
It's possible now, that this information has gone mainstream, programmers worry about how their non-tech friends view them for working there.
shapov··on Git ransom campaign incident report
I didn't see it mentioned in the article, but did any of the 3 companies confirm that the repos have been actually cloned as the attackers suggest?
shapov··on Amazon S3 Path Deprecation Plan – The Rest of the Story
That would mean they are blocking all S3 buckets indiscriminately.
shapov··on Epic Games Is Acquiring Psyonix
Steam allows you to sell your game and provide players with steam keys from your own website without taking any cut. So that 30% cut that steam takes gets diluted quite a bit.

Epic does not allow for that level of distribution. It also doesn’t seem like they will.

Your argument about walled gardens also falls apart as soon as you realize that Epic is pushing for exclusivity.

shapov··on Epic Games Is Acquiring Psyonix
This comment is very misinformed on so many fronts. I am glad people with more HN points are downvoting this, because I am not really able to.
shapov··on An emerging black market offers Amazon sellers ways to cheat the marketplace
Amazon’s strength is their logistics network. Any co-op you’ve just described will have an incredibly difficult time competing on shipping prices and speed of delivery.
shapov··on Show HN: Namegine – find a name for your startup or product
Although I am sure your intentions are pure, he raises a valid point. I think you'd benefit from making it apparent that "we won't steal or squat you name" somewhere on the landing page.

I think it's a fantastic idea, keep up the good work.

shapov··on Medical Device CEO Catches Stranger After Hours, Prompting Espionage Charges
I think the 2 video cameras and several SIM cards is what seems odd about this combo.
shapov··on Ask HN: Engineering team consists of all friends
The important part is the "...regardless of their qualifications". There is nothing wrong with hiring friends, or family as long as the person is qualified. OP didn't mention anything about qualifications, so I think it's a bit early to jump the gun and proclaim Nepotism.

In reality it's very common to get a job because a friend or a family member referred you.

shapov··on Show HN: Professional profile management tool built using React
If I understand correctly, the only way to sign up is to use either Facebook or Google? There's is no way to just create a standalone account?
shapov··on Chicago taxi industry sliding towards collapse

I don't use Uber over taxis simply because I can get the exact same service from a taxi
That's just not true.

Just off the top of my head:

* 3-4 clicks and I have an Uber on its way vs. Having to talk to a dispatcher. Time saved.

* I know ahead of time how much the fair will be vs. at the end of the ride.

* I simply get out of the car once I reach my destination. I don't have to deal with paying, calculating tip, etc...

* Uber cars tend to be newer and in much better condition.

Now, I am not advocating for Uber, but lets not kid ourselves that the two experiences are even comparable from the customer's point of view.

shapov··on New APIs to power customer engagement in Direct Messages
From reading his comment it seems like his primary concern is the issue of trust. He goes on, "Not just talking about their API...". So I think the features he is referring to are user facing features, not API features.
shapov··on Former Apple engineer: Tim Cook made Apple a 'boring operations company'
You are taking that quote out of context. The full quote:

"Working at Palm, the teams were highly organizational, [hierarchical] and responsibilities were siloed," Burrough said.
"There was a clear sense that each person had a clear responsibility, and rarely deviated from it.
When you went to someone for help solving a problem 'not my job' was a common response."
He is clearly talking about his previous experience at Palm.
shapov··on Amazon sells out of the NES Classic Edition in less than a minute
That is not at all what drop shipping is.

Drop shipping is a supply chain management method in which the retailer does not keep goods in stock but instead transfers customer orders and shipment details to either the manufacturer, another retailer, or a wholesaler, who then ships the goods directly to the customer
shapov··on Show HN: Record your screen, share and instantly know when people watch
Yep, I was thinking that it will make the viewers feel like someone is standing over the shoulder watching.
shapov··on Show HN: Record your screen, share and instantly know when people watch
As a person receiving the screen recording, do I have the option to opt-out, and not report my viewing metrics back to the creator?
shapov··on Snapchat Parent Working on IPO That Could Value Company at $25B or More
Really, who the hell cares about volatility, when it's your retirement at stake /s

Really though, [anything that loses half it's market cap](http://www.reuters.com/article/linkedin-results-research-idU...) in a span of a day should not be in your retirement portfolio, and lets face it, most of these 'growth' oriented startups that go IPO, are susceptible to those losses.

EDIT: Just to clarify. When I say growth oriented, I mean the companies that burn through money to get as many users as possible, without a clear monetization strategy(other than, we'll sell ads).

shapov··on NoScript is harmful and promotes malware
> there is no evidence that NoScript itself is harmful

The article states that every time the plugin updates, it automatically opens up a webpage that serves malware. So technically the article is not wrong. NoScript forces your browser to open a malicious page, therefore it can be considered itself harmful.

shapov··on Procedural world generation: C++11 library with highly customizable API
I think this is the relevant section of the docs.

https://github.com/reinterpretcat/utymap/wiki/How-To#customi...

Customize POI

By default, Place of Interest data is rendered as textured cube by demo app. If you want to customize this, check poi builder in demo app. You may replace default implementation with more complex. In future, there are plans to start adding specific builders for specific poi (e.g. builder for cache machine, street lights, etc.)

shapov··on How to Write Unmaintainable Code
I am never going outside again.
shapov··on Introducing Verve: minimalistic, static, functional language
I actually enjoyed the format of your article, and your explanation of the links makes perfect sense, to me. Thanks for taking the time to write this.
shapov··on CIA Director John Brennan Pretends Foreign Cryptography Doesn't Exist
Sounds like a quote from someone who is engaged in malicious activity.
shapov··on Face recognition app taking Russia by storm may bring end to public anonymity
I think the point he was trying to make is that, this type of tech will drive talent out of countries such as Russia.
shapov··on Show HN: Comparably – See what people like you get paid at work
Forcing users to enter data like that to see the results, will undoubtedly lead to lots and lots of fake salaries in their system.

P.S. My salary is not $2

shapov··on Desktop Neo – rethinking the desktop interface for productivity
Seems like you have the bar set pretty high for what you consider to be a good designer. Would you mind sharing some of the work your studio does?

I am by no means a designer, but from an outsider's perspective(after all designs are consumed by regular folk like myself, not necessarily other designers) Lennart's work seems pretty well done. Especially considering that he is at the very start of his career.

shapov··on 70 tools no remote employee should do without
Not to mention that some of the tools link to the Russian version of the site.
shapov··on Why Google Employees Quit (2009)
I agree. This seems like a great topic for a blog post.
shapov··on My Ukraine
This is ridiculous. At the time of me posting this 'felipepiresx' has 19 out of 49 comments in this thread.
