shamdasani··on How to avoid Amazon: guide to online shopping
I recently found out of a site (https://syessa.com) selling household items (hand soap, detergent, dish liquid, etc.) at equal to or cheaper prices than Amazon. Better to support small businesses! I ordered from them last thursday and received my order today.

Woah - very cool! I'm a part of Hack Club (https://hackclub.com), which is a nonprofit worldwide network of high school coding clubs. Hack Club has an amazing community of young developers - I actually lead a Hack Club at my high school, and I definitely recommend that you join their slack (https://hackclub.com/slack_invite) to connect with other young makers!

By the way, I'm a 17 year-old developer (https://shamdasani.org), but I probably started ~14. My main project is Enlight (https://enlight.nyc) to teach others to code by building projects. If you'd like to contribute, that would be awesome - feel free to shoot me an email :)

Thank you!

Thanks man! Yeah, just sent you an email :)

Definitely. The best part is that programmers can easily build on top of these projects to create sophisticated applications.

Coming soon! I'm planning a page with tracks for web development, machine learning, iOS development, etc.
shamdasani··on 16 year old app developer: Plagiarist or Prodigy?
I'd like to weigh in on this as a 16 year old. By no means am I an experienced programmer [1], but I feel as if I am learning all that I can. Sure, stackoverflow and Google are there to help, but I make sure that I understand whatever I write.

This girl is using her age as a marketing tactic, and I understand the point of the author, but this post goes too far. Instead of pointing out her faults by making a big deal on his blog, the author should reach out to her and explain his opinion in a mature manner. I don't think it is right to expose someone publicly just for making a mistake.

Yep that’s a bug. Will fix shortly. Enlights old domain was enlight.ml until freenom took away the domain. I guess that’s what happens when I use a free domain :/

I understand where you are coming from. I think having code exercises and a more step by step process is something Enlight can improve upon. I love your URL shortner tutorial. Feel free to contribute a project or two to Enlight! Thanks for the feedback.

Thank you for the feedback. I will definitely consider this in the future (when I make my own mailchimp like service) as users would benefit from this.

Thanks for the heads up. DOM methods are more clear and better. Will update the tutorial soon.

That's the plan. Any suggestions for forum software? Discourse? Flarum? Trying to implement it before the new year.

Great job! You think some Enlight projects would fit well there?
shamdasani··on Show HN: Enlight – Learn to code by building projects
Makes sense. I added localStorage to the text editor, but adding depth to other projects enhances not only the app, but now the user knows more features to implement in their future projects. Thank you.

Good point - will add something on that soon. I by no means am a professional programmer, just a hobbyist sharing what I've learned.

I thought this would help me get a 1600 on my SAT :(
shamdasani··on Paying top employees the highest salaries in the market
The desire for more often blinds us. We all are looking for more wealth, and perhaps working for a startup like this will get us there. However, I personally think that talent is priceless. You can't just throw money for top skill.

In field like startups, you have to passionate on what you're working on to make it the best it can be. Sure, say I have "top talent". But, what we fail to realize that "top talent" may not translate into more revenue or users. I must be willing to work the extra hours and focus my mind one hundred percent of the time to utilize this talent.

And, honestly, I do not think even money would motivate me to work to such a degree if I'm working on something I don't believe in.

shamdasani··on Show HN: Hyperpixel – Best landing pages for inspiration
To be honest, I dislike any landing page that makes it hard for me to figure out what the product/company/service does. There's this new trend where too many landings focus on the "one-liners" that look more of an advertisement rather than an actual tagline.

Don't get me wrong, I love the site! You've done a great job with the design and I really enjoyed discovering some landings that are straight to the point and beautiful.
