shakeel_mohamed··on Ask HN: Any Tips on Learning to Code?
I highly recommend FreeCodeCamp https://www.freecodecamp.org/ Feel free to DM me on Twitter @_shakeel, I'm happy to give a more exhaustive list if you're interested!
shakeel_mohamed··on Simplified and community-driven man pages
Yep, I love bropages!
shakeel_mohamed··on Night Shift compared to f.lux
Thanks for the link! Been dealing with this problem for multiple years now :)
shakeel_mohamed··on Serverless File Uploads – Netlify
Correct. But the signature doesn't necessarily need to be per-file upload, so I have it embedded in JS. For my use case, saving the extra network hop is worthwhile.
shakeel_mohamed··on Serverless File Uploads – Netlify
What's wrong with doing all of this on the front-end? I recently did just that after generating the signature and policy locally.

shakeel_mohamed··on License now displayed on repository overview
This seems very odd, I wonder if it's a bug or by design
shakeel_mohamed··on Getting started with Raspberry Pi – Building a Digital Photo Frame
Thanks for the link! I want something for my desk, so I can try using my old Nexus 4. Maybe I can live with the 5" display since it won't cost me anything
shakeel_mohamed··on Getting started with Raspberry Pi – Building a Digital Photo Frame
Interesting timing, I actually want to do this with my Pi (but wired). The only thing holding me back is the cost of the display - any suggestions for a cheaper non-touch display?
shakeel_mohamed··on It is time to unlink the “Backspace” – Browser Back shortcut (2012)
That's not obvious :)
shakeel_mohamed··on Surfingkeys – Expand your browser with javascript and keyboard
I LOVE the scroll with j & k, it's smoothest scrolling experience I've ever seen!
shakeel_mohamed··on Unsafe levels of toxic chemicals found in drinking water for 6M Americans
I knew Brita wasn't great, but I didn't know they were so inferior. Thanks for the info!
shakeel_mohamed··on Dollar Shave Club and the Disruption of Everything
I switched to a safety razor and never looked back!
shakeel_mohamed··on Apple opens Siri to third party developers
It could be intentional, there's already siri commands for Apple Music.
shakeel_mohamed··on Atom text editor 1.7.0 released
I don't know when the perf improved, but it definitely has recently. In the past month I downloaded Atom on OS X (for the third time) to see if the perf had improved and I was impressed! I added a huge project's folder and indexing was done insanely fast (iirc less than 30 seconds). I don't really have a need for Atom at the moment since Sublime Text exists, but I might recommend it for new programmers since it's free + hackable.
shakeel_mohamed··on Open Sourcers Race to Build Better Versions of Slack
I've been using Gitter for a few months now, I think it's just polished enough to use consistently. If it were even slightly unstable I'd have to stop using it.
shakeel_mohamed··on Show HN: Streaks, a todo list that helps you form good habits
True. I actually use custom goals with Coach me, so I could totally make a specific task like that.
shakeel_mohamed··on Show HN: Streaks, a todo list that helps you form good habits
This looks similar to coach.me, aside from the "hire a coach" aspect. Or, am I missing something?
shakeel_mohamed··on Google Design
Basically this, everything seems like it's hidden behind another gesture.
shakeel_mohamed··on Ask HN: How to talk smart?
I think generally reading, learning & connecting with more people will help you to link ideas from very different aspects of life. The more you know, the more interesting conversations you can have. Just my 2 cents
shakeel_mohamed··on Code Review Best Practices
Another thing to check for that I didn't see addressed is debug statements. There's nothing quite like seeing console.log("shit"); during a code review :)
shakeel_mohamed··on Code Review Best Practices
+1 I'm currently dealing with this. The individual doesn't offer feedback on my code when under review, so it appears like a personal attack.
shakeel_mohamed··on Remotely send Chrome and Node.js into infinite loops via OS X kernel bug
I wonder if this is related to a wacky clipboard bug I hit today while VMWare Fusion was open. Basically I copied & pasted a file within a VM, then copied some text from Chrome on OSX and Chrome froze instantly.
shakeel_mohamed··on Osmosis: Web scraper for Node.js
The readme says "Lightweight: no dependencies like jQuery, cheerio, or jsdom", I think the context is relevant for performance and/or size reasons.
shakeel_mohamed··on Postico – A modern PostgreSQL client for OS X
I might be a bit overkill because it has the modeling tools as well, but I really like pgModeler: http://pgmodeler.com.br/
shakeel_mohamed··on Lenovo Caught Installing Adware on New Computers
MSFT should really be pushing these more, seems like a great opportunity
shakeel_mohamed··on The New Haskell.org
I found a bug in the tutorial that introduces map.

Typing in: map(+1) [1..5] won't advance to the next step (even though the interpreter handles it fine), but map (+1) [1..5] will (note the space after map).

shakeel_mohamed··on Chipotle's registrar hacked, website offline
Their twitter account has been compromised as well :(
shakeel_mohamed··on Show HN: Who Did Git? – Find out who the made that unknown commit
Yes. If someone doesn't configure their username or email (using git config), git will try to create an email address using the format <local_username>@<machine_name>.local and will not set a name. If there's no user.name set, and the email isn't connected to a Github account (or isn't an email address at all), Github will display "unknown" as the commit author.
shakeel_mohamed··on Show HN: Who Did Git? – Find out who the made that unknown commit
Oh. That would've saved some time, thanks!
shakeel_mohamed··on Android Lollipop is out, but almost no one is using it
Fastest? I disagree, Kitkat was much better CM is infinitely better than anything performance wise.
