shahryc··on Show HN: Colibrin – Get up to 15% of your rent back. (AMA in comments)
I think some rental properties are definitely underutilized
shahryc··on Weaponising Information: Enter an Age of Unbridled Hyperconnectivity
Richard Stallman was prescient
shahryc··on US military to send cyber soldiers to the battlefield
how does the US compare to Russia and China in terms of cyber offense/defense? thoughts?
shahryc··on [dead]
I'm noticing a lot of very positive stories bout Snapchat (WIRED --- Snap’s IPO Made Its Employees Millionaires—Why Not DJ Khaled?, CNBNC --- Here are all the ways Facebook has copied Snapchat). What's going on here? Is Snapchat using PR firms to prop up the stock after the analysts downgraded the stock earlier this week?
shahryc··on Launch HN: Penny (YC W17) – a personal finance coach
same here -- I've downloaded and have been using it ever since. It is very similar to Lark, the chatbat as a personal weight loss coach. I really like the general "nudge" approach that both apps are taking.
shahryc··on Some rabbis just lifted an 800-year-old dietary rule
Very true --- and "the rabbis with the Conservative movement" are really a small minority compared to the Orthodox strands (Modern Orthodox, Haredi, Religious-Zionist, etc.)
shahryc··on Ask HN: What should we fund at YC Research?
MACHINE REASONING -- something like the "Winograd Schema Challenge"
shahryc··on Signs Point to Unencrypted Communications Between Terror Suspects
Whether or not this particular attack happened with unencrypted vs. encrypted communications is irrelevant. I'm sure if we look at terror suspects and attacks in the past year across the world --- some of them used unencrypted means to communicate and others that use encrypted means to communicate. 99.999% of people aren't terror suspects. The real question is the following: how do we fight against the remainder without comprising our values?
shahryc··on What are some opportunities in residential and commercial real estate?
I've worked in both residential and commercial real estate a couple years back, and I agree. The software that people use on a daily basis truly sucks.
shahryc··on Kleanapp wants to clean Homejoy's mess in LA -– same day service in only 2 hrs
No peak pricing & strictly $25/Hour. All workers are US citizens, fluent in English, have had extensive background checks, and are fully bonded and insured.
shahryc··on Jessica Livingston
thanks for sharing this --- puts a lot in context!
shahryc··on Facebook is testing Snapchat-like disappearing messages in France
Thoughts? What's the difference between FB's Poke project and this?
shahryc··on Argentina Has More Women in Science–But It Hasn't Fixed Sexism
In regards to the statement that, "no one, and certainly no one in science, has figured out how to patch the leaky pipeline." I think YC/Sam Altman might be able to address that leaky pipeline with the YC Research initiative, especially because they will be funding researchers do research without the things this article mentions (ie. high stakes of tenure, internal politics, etc.)
shahryc··on Twitter CEO Dorsey Apologizes to Developers
lol, good point. what are the concrete steps they are taking to change?
shahryc··on States Eye Taxes on Streaming Video and Cloud Computing
this approach may lead people to seek lower-cost, untaxed mediums (like torrents) rather than a heavily taxed alternative
shahryc··on Yazidi's form all-female 'Sun Girls' unit to fight ISIS
I think it's interesting how they are flipping the propaganda & recruiting against ISIS
shahryc··on Designers speculate about what Apple's self-driving iCar might look like
seems like the birth of an industry
shahryc··on Silicon Valley Isn't Run by Straight White American-Born Men
good point, it's not representative at the top. but, I think it's a step in the right direction.
shahryc··on Comcast may challenge YouTube and Facebook with new on demand service
What do you guys think the online video ecosystem will look like in the next 5-10 years?
shahryc··on Pentagon launches new research outpost in valley
this is kinda overdue
shahryc··on Samsung Unveils Galaxy S6 Edge
Samsugn is one of the world's largest distributor in terms of smartphone shipments --- but, it's quarterly profits have been down for the past 5 quarters. So, I wonder where they could focus on to reverse that trend.

I think the government should improve how productivity is measure

---- see here: http://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1467-8411.00002/a...

The article, stated, " The major objective of the paper is to show that in the end the importance of technological change in economic growth depends largely on how TFP is defined and measured. T"

shahryc··on What neuroscience can learn from computer science
seems like there's a lot we are just discovery, and there's more room to learn from what we don't know

reminds me this: " Google's chief engineer, Ray Kurzweil, recently told MIT Technology Review that he envisions a cybernetic friend* based on deep learning that listens in on your phone conversation, reads your emails and tracks your every move so that it can tell you things you want to know even before you ask."

*I'd like an Einstein like cybernetic friend

I think taxpayer subsidies make it easier for management to justify losing $4,000 per car.

In the following article:

http://www.motherjones.com/politics/2013/10/tesla-motors-fre...

Fred Turner, said "It is not quite self-delusion, but there is a habit of thinking of oneself as a free-standing, independent agent, and of not acknowledging the subsidies that one received. And this goes on all the time in the Valley."

shahryc··on Startups Vie to Build an Uber for Health Care
I'd imagine it would be particularly helpful for senior citizens.
shahryc··on Drones Getting in the Way of Emergency Responders
This is in contrast to this article, that states, "Drones can help in two ways: They can safely gather more information about fire conditions than is currently available, and they can send that information to firefighters on the ground quickly." --- http://money.cnn.com/2013/08/19/technology/innovation/fire-f...
shahryc··on My Dream Is to Bring Silicon Valley to South LA
okay, my apologies
shahryc··on My Dream Is to Bring Silicon Valley to South LA
"Big tech companies are falling over each other to support Mother of Many, right?

Ain't nobody falling over each other to give Mother of Many funding. If one of them would give me a BIG shot that would be a real game changer."

shahryc··on At Silicon Valley Bank, risky tech startups are lucrative business
I think the Fed's easy money policy of low-interest rates prop institutional investors to park money with VCs for higher returns --- the combination of low-interest rates & lots of money in the valley enable SVB to capitalize on start-ups, unlike other banks. Curious to know if it was the same during the dot-com bubble
shahryc··on At Silicon Valley Bank, risky tech startups are lucrative business
"The bank is aggressive in courting investors as well, part of why it has become the 'first call' bank for many of them, said James Slavet, a Menlo Park, Calif., venture investor with Greycroft Partners."
