shadeslayer_··on Launch HN: Axolo (YC W21) – Faster pull requests and code reviews
Sounds promising. I'd look forward to trying this out if and when you launch a Bitbucket integration.
shadeslayer_··on JsonLogic
Not to be that guy but didn't we agree about moving business all business logic into a single place, back in 2012?
shadeslayer_··on Launch HN: Fig (YC S20) – Autocomplete for the Terminal
This is just unnecessarily rude. The guy had explicitly mentioned about the daily ping and it's mentioned on the product doc as well - so please don't make him up as the big bad guy who says I CAN HAZ DATA
shadeslayer_··on Launch HN: Fig (YC S20) – Autocomplete for the Terminal
I know about zsh-autosuggestions and fzf - I wanted to ask that as a developer building something like Fig, is there a way to build the same thing with less permissions than they currently have?
shadeslayer_··on Launch HN: Fig (YC S20) – Autocomplete for the Terminal
Is there another way to achieve what the product tries to do? Genuinely asking.
shadeslayer_··on Launch HN: Fig (YC S20) – Autocomplete for the Terminal
I have been using zsh-autosuggestions [1] to achieve something similar, so seeing a new product that seems infinitely easier to configure and much more powerful is very.. heartening. I might not move over right this moment, but I'll be cheering you on.

PS: I read the fine print and I (and many others, I'm sure) would really, really like to pay some money for you to not send ANY telemetry data at all. Would be great if you kept this demographic in mind.

Congrats on the launch, and all the best!

shadeslayer_··on Flight incident: Passengers titled ‘Miss’ counted as children [pdf]
Indian and I can confirm isn't the norm.
shadeslayer_··on Apple doesn't care about album cover art
Another takeaway from this post is the album, as a unit of music, falling out of vogue. The album name doesn't show up anywhere on the Spotify/Apple Music UI - you have to go deep into the artist pages (?) to find it. Streaming is the main mode of consuming music for most people, and streaming platforms only care about the number of plays.

It is sort of sad, because some of the best pieces of music over the last century have been albums where the songs are tied together in some sort of progression - these are often called concept albums. The Wall, Ziggy Stardust, American Idiot are a few examples that come to mind. Soon there might come a day when nobody actually takes the time to listen to an album from start to finish.

shadeslayer_··on Turing Award goes to Aho and Ullman
One of the enduring memories of bumbling through my first few months as an undergrad was coming upon a torn, well-read copy of the Dragon Book in the institute library. To date, it remains one of the best pieces of CS literature I have read.

Seven years down the line, it feels strangely warm to read those names again.

shadeslayer_··on Ask HN: Which phone do you use?
I use a Oneplus 7T, and will probably upgrade to the new Oneplus 9.
shadeslayer_··on Dhcpcd Will Need a New Maintainer
This is so sad because if you read his blog post from January 2021, he sounds so very hopeful and happy at the prospect of the immunotherapy working. It sounds like he discovered a new lease of life. Being thrown from that situation to the new prognosis which is infinitely worse, sounds like a hammer blow.
shadeslayer_··on 90-year-old man spends $10k on 2 ads in WSJ to tell AT&T CEO about slow internet
Off the top of my head, my connection has only had ~8 hours of downtime over the last six months. That is around 99% uptime.
shadeslayer_··on 90-year-old man spends $10k on 2 ads in WSJ to tell AT&T CEO about slow internet
As someone from India, it is unbelievable that someone from California - an affluent state in a first-world country - has to actually pay for a 3.5Mbps connection in 2021. For context, I was paying around $11/mo for a 40Mbps connection in 2016.
shadeslayer_··on Games released before PS4 are no longer appearing in search on PlayStation.com
HN Kiss of Death. 508 Resource Limit Reached.
shadeslayer_··on Show HN: ztext.js – JavaScript library that makes any font 3D
This is a brilliant library, Bennett. Very fluent documentation too. Congratulations on the release!
shadeslayer_··on To head off regulators, Google makes certain words taboo
If it were so, how is it possible for the Google employees to tell them apart?
shadeslayer_··on Five Buck Fatigue
Human beings need to understand that it is simply not possible for a large portion of people to live off their hobbies - there's a reason why they're called hobbies or passion projects to begin with.
shadeslayer_··on Opera GX Gaming Browser
Unrelated, but it's borderline frustrating how used to I have gotten to the Chrome ecosystem by now - to the point that the mere thought of switching to any other browser makes me queasy.

I tried Brave for a couple weeks but they didn't support DRM videos, so back I went to Chrome.

shadeslayer_··on Opera GX Gaming Browser
No idea why you're being downvoted.
shadeslayer_··on Show HN: Humans vs AI – A/B testing GPT-3
It's scary how this can be interpreted as multiple countries.
shadeslayer_··on Ask HN: What weird or hard problems are you trying to solve?
I'm trying to build a storefront experience for building customized home improvement services. These services can be anything between a new set of curtains, new tiling for your kitchen or a false-ceiling throughout your home. This is difficult because these services are dynamic in nature, and as such we cannot sell fixed SKUs like normal e-commerce services do.

We are trying to develop a unified service-building experience wherein the user will be able to punch in their requirements and get a product tailor-made for them, along with the estimated price (which comes with ~10% tolerance). It's tough, but we're getting there.

well, now I'm invested in this.
