sh4rks··on Make-A-Video: AI system that generates videos from text
> programmers

Surely if we get to the point where programmers are no longer needed, humans have essentially been replaced by AI? Since the AI programmers could just program better and better AI?

sh4rks··on Tell HN: Locked out of Gmail account even after right password, recovery email
And what if you somehow lose access to your password manager?
sh4rks··on The SEC revealed today that it charged VMware with fraud
That website is godawful to read on mobile. You can't close the popups that cover half the screen without getting sent to another page.
sh4rks··on Nuclear-Powered Cardiac Pacemakers
That sounds morbid
sh4rks··on Former world champion reveals that she was ordered to lose Olympic semi-final
Seems like a fundamental flaw in the sport then
sh4rks··on At $249 per day, prison stays leave ex-inmates deep in debt
I'd be surprised if it was more than 1%. But getting actual data is impossible of course.
sh4rks··on Slack’s free plan change is causing an exodus
I would give Discord servers another go. They definitely have that "community" feel, especially for more niche servers.
sh4rks··on Remote scan of student’s room before test violated his privacy, judge rules
The best way to prevent cheating in an online test is to set a strict time limit. That way its harder for them to look up the answers on Google etc. The problem then is that a student may experience technical difficulties out of their control. For cases like that, students should be able to appeal for extra time.
sh4rks··on Building a back end using only OpenAI Codex
If you're a student, copilot is free I believe
sh4rks··on Imagen: An AI system that creates photorealistic images from input text
The davinci ones are incredibly intricate
sh4rks··on The Four Dirty C-Words of the Internet
Those content creators often stream or upload on multiple platforms. Twitch, YT, Tiktok etc. So it's easier to just say "content creator" rather than "streamer and video creator".
sh4rks··on Ask HN: DALL-E was trained on watermarked stock images?
What about two pixels?
sh4rks··on Ask HN: DALL-E was trained on watermarked stock images?
OP did say what prompt they used
sh4rks··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
Is it just me, or does imgur never load on Firefox mobile?
sh4rks··on Global Code Time Report
In the eyes of a PM, it is a useful metric. Because they think more code = more work. And in a way they're right, every solution will involve some amount of code (unless it's some menial task like changing a config file). So perhaps in their ideal world, devs spend less time thinking and more time coding (suboptimal) solutions to ship stuff faster.
sh4rks··on Global Code Time Report
Maybe because it's harder to test the interactive features in a website. Sure, Selenium and Playwright exist, but they're not perfect solutions. There are a lot of moving parts to a typical website, and also maintaining these tests is a nightmare.
sh4rks··on uBlock Origin works best on Firefox
Does it really matter if it loads in 2 seconds in Chromium vs 3 seconds in Firefox?
sh4rks··on Shazam turns 20
> I can play video games with much better graphics than my N64

And - you can play N64 games on a rectangle you can carry in your pocket.

sh4rks··on A list of developer questions to ask prospective employers
Also, the questions lack context. For example, what answer am I expecting when I ask whether the company is currently profitable?
sh4rks··on Hate PDF Forms? Check Out My No Code Solution
Can you really classify this as code? It's just a series of statements, no conditionals or variables.

Though to be fair, when I saw no-code, I was expecting drag-and-drop form elements.

sh4rks··on Instagram, TikTok, and the Three Trends
That would fit under the "video" category
sh4rks··on Habitual GPS use negatively impacts spatial memory during self-guided navigation
They do teach how to touch type in schools
sh4rks··on Instagram can track anything you do on any website in their in-app browser
Not sure if bait but I'll bite. Flip phones in this day and age? Nobody even uses sms to text each other anymore. You'd be isolating your kid by not giving them access to WhatsApp and other messaging apps.

I pray you never have kids because from your other comments it seems like you had painfully low self esteem in school and now you've tricked yourself into believing that that's the norm.

sh4rks··on In-browser retro-futuristic tank game, open source
I'm really surprised how smooth the controls felt on my phone. Even with eight direction buttons, the movement was intuitive.
sh4rks··on Toward a Better Music Theory (2013)
I don't see how the supermode can be useful to anyone starting to learn music theory. The hard part is figuring out the rhythm, vocabulary, and phrasing that make those notes sound "good".

I still think one of the best ways of learning theory (for guitar at least) is to start with the pentatonic and diatonic scales, then add triads and "colour" notes.

I'm curious to know other people's opinions though.

sh4rks··on We're improving search results when you use quotes
I sometimes find that duckduckgo has better results than Google for a particular query, and other times it's the opposite.

I wish there was a way to aggregate the two results together.
