sgwizdak··on My Bose QC-35 II headphones burst into flames and left me with chemical burns
I never thought it would happen to me either. I knew the risks. I took care of my devices. I treated my devices with lithium ion as a loaded gun. But it happened. It happened suddenly, and if I wasn't present, it would have taken out my home and killed my pets and possibly my wife.

I wrote this not to shame Bose. But to highlight the risk of personal wearables and lithium ion technologies.

sgwizdak··on Ask HN: Was Your Turkey Dry?
No.

I followed this recipe: https://oven.anovaculinary.com/recipe/XfuP37eSjxZvmNh23jBJ

The act of adding steam to the cooking process and only using a 11 lb bird (with some flavor injection and dry brining) prevents drying.

sgwizdak··on Ask HN: What are some productivity hacks which junior devs should know?
Own your calendar. Have enough time carved out for "deep-focus" time, 2-4 hours of uninterrupted time, plan dev tasks to line up with these and aggressively block out time as needed.

Keep detailed notes when in meetings, find a system that works for you where you can easily index and search things.

Keep detailed notes about your contributions, what you've done, how you've helped others, discussions led, etc. Invaluable for performance reviews and promotions and in general seeing where you're spending time. I used to keep this in a public .plan file, now-a-days it's shared doc that I let my managers see.

Do not sacrifice your health. Carve out time for exercise. Carve out time for learning. It's sometimes nice to work late for that big block of quiet uninterrupted time, but schedule it on your terms and only once or twice a week.

Know your toolsets. You should be able to easily execute, test, profile, and debug. If this is painful, then investments need to be made on your codebase.

When building systems, focus on interconnectivity and getting a base skeleton working first and then fill in details. Avoid "big-bang" integrations, they never work, and can result in last minute surprises. Strive to have the skeleton component building and working daily as you add in details.

sgwizdak··on Ask HN: How do I get fit and healthy as a software engineer?
I found a gym that has a pool and built swimming into my habit. For me it's great -- anaerobic and aerobic workout combined into a single activity. Being in the pool means I don't get sweaty or hot. Started in Jan, lost 25 lbs and have gained lots of muscle. Low risk of injury, which was an issue for me with other workouts.
sgwizdak··on Ask HN: Resources to encourage teen on becoming computer engineer?
I recommend checking out https://www.adafruit.com -- good blogs, kits, and learning resources in the hardware realm.
sgwizdak··on Amazon added a non-compete after the employee entered the U.S. on an L1B visa
The first thing to ask yourself -- are you happy? Are you working on problems that you think are interesting? Use that as a guide to determine if you need to change positions or companies. Benefits and comp are always great, but at a certain point you also start to examine your role in the world and the impact that you can have. Never sell yourself short, always look forward, and try to use the resources you have available to develop your skills.

I've been with Amazon for about 15 years. There are a lot of employees who choose to be at Amazon and not Google/FB. There are pros/cons with each of the FAANGs and really any job. I find the problem space of Amazon's physical business to be fascinating to work on whereas I couldn't give a hoot about online advertising. With regards to benefits -- I've made enough in RSU appreciation for those differences to not matter. But I encourage people to carefully consider their own circumstances and look closely at long-term growth potential of whatever companies they're considering.

sgwizdak··on Extremely disillusioned with technology. Please help
1. It's going to be different for everyone. I think it should be activities that leave you feeling physically and mentally refreshed. Learning a new musical instrument and mountain climbing helped myself. I have had other coworkers who found a lot of value in learning to dance.

2. Be realistic about the fact you need a mental break. Avoid burning yourself out anymore than you already are. Discuss your strategy and reasoning with your family so it's not a shock to them and have a plan on how to cover finances and health-care.

sgwizdak··on Show HN: Interactive guitar scales diagrams
This is great! I've been working on trying to work these out on the fly, and this is a great way to check yourself.

One feature idea: options to display seven and eight string versions of the chart. Extended range guitars are popular, and there aren't many great scale references.

I recently switched because I need something with some GPU horsepower. I was pleasantly surprised with Windows 10 dark theme + http://cmder.net
sgwizdak··on Ask HN: After 20 years of programming, what do I do now?
Try a tech bootcamp (codefellows.org) to freshen up your skill set, most of the reputable ones have some form of career counseling, and industry connections?
sgwizdak··on Machine Learning Showdown: Apache Mahout vs. Weka
I'm surprised that Spark's mllib wasn't included in this comparison.
sgwizdak··on Helm, a functionally reactive game engine
Yeah, I haven't had much luck with OSX either, lots of the glib dependencies seems somewhat busted due to

sgwizdak··on Job interviews go both ways (2011)
Huh, I was asked that very same tree traversal question at an interview recently.
sgwizdak··on Ask HN: How to Find a Developer Job with a Felony?
Akamai and Citrix have some job openings in the Fort Lauderdale area, with Akamai specifically looking for people with your background. If you're stuck in FL, that's probably your best bet.

Orlando isn't so great for tech jobs -- though Disney is actively hiring. The FLL/Miami area long ago had a huge IBM and Harris presence, which resulted in a handful of tech companies having some sort of presence in the area.
