sgent··on Cook shortage threatens to sink U.S. Coast Guard operations
Any ship using US deckhands will need US command crew (Jones Act). Immigration might open up deckhand positions, but not master positions until they naturalize.
sgent··on Cook shortage threatens to sink U.S. Coast Guard operations
Someone has given you a bill of goods. Any US MD/DO graduate will get a residency position, but there are a few every year that only apply for Orthopedics or Ophthalmology and don't select a backup IM/FM program and thus wind up unmatched. There are IM/FM/PEDS/Internship positions open, but they choose to pass and reapply next year. The only reason they couldn't get any residency is bad advising or an issue which is expected to prevent them from getting a medical license.
sgent··on Plastic recycling remains a 'myth': Greenpeace study
It should not be "burned" as in a bonfire (like is done in many places). It needs to be burned in an electric arc furnace or mixed with coke for steel at temperatures in excess of 1000k.
sgent··on Texas Roofer Arrested in Florida for Helping Hurricane Victims
I think Houston requires some hurricane mitigations, but most of TX doesn't, especially not up to Miami / Dade standards which is required in this county.
sgent··on Texas Roofer Arrested in Florida for Helping Hurricane Victims
They can do that, and it is how this specific case was handled eventually.
sgent··on Alex Jones told to pay $965M damages to Sandy Hook victims' families
See Taco Bell suing for defamation about the makeup of their taco meat. You might get away with a claim about McDonald's burgers that is wrong, it would only be because you were to small to notice.
sgent··on Document Foundation starts charging €8.99 for 'free' LibreOffice
If they stop providing a signed binary outside the Mac Store (IDK if they did), then this is the only safe way to get it other than a self compile. Add in auto updates and supporting the foundation and it seems reasonable.
sgent··on Prenatal cannabis exposure associated with mental disorders in children
In most states it is a free for all, especially in non-medical stores. A few of the medical only states require them to be dispensed by a pharmacist, but that is the exception.
sgent··on The most secure cloud is your computer
I don't care who crack's my Excel spreadsheet years after the heat death of the universe.
sgent··on Health insurers just published close to a trillion hospital prices
Yes but if you're at Kaiser in San Francisco and have a zebra there may only be one doc (or a small group) at UCSF that can treat your zebra, and they are not in the Kaiser network, so you go to Los Angles where Kaiser's specialist is, get treated by a lesser doc with a virtual visit assist from LA, or pay cash out of network.
sgent··on Health insurers just published close to a trillion hospital prices
No, but there is a "rule of thumb" that a hospital will prefer private insurance patients to medicaid patients (due to reimbursement), and private insurance patients will go to hospitals with newer and nicer facilities. If you want the elective hip replacement patient, then having a newly remodeled orthopedic ward / office building is critical. Patients probably can't tell one doctor or nurse from another, and hospitals don't advertise on actual quality measurements like staffing ratios...
sgent··on Kiwi Farms is down across all domains as DDoS-Guard terminates service
Nah, too much Nazi is their line I believe. Pro Nazi speech is heavily banned in Russia and it is a Russian company.
sgent··on Guidance to make federally funded research freely available without delay
Currently government funded research is either open access (and pays the fee) or is closed access for 1 year then becomes open (and is not subject to fees). Now all government research will have to pay open access fees, and the new guidance allows them to request additional funding for open access fees.

Currently the government ranks all grant applications, and funds everyone until it runs out of money. Under the new system it will run out of money sooner -- especially for smaller grant programs for early career grad students and undergrads.

sgent··on Guidance to make federally funded research freely available without delay
I'm concerned that this will do nothing but result in fewer government awards and make non-governmental research more difficult to access. This directive still allows journals to charge open access publishing fees, which often exceed 12,000k, and allow grantees to add this to their grants, resulting in fewer grants.

In addition, there will be no upper limit on open access fees, so privately funded research will essentially be required to opt for closed access publishing so they can avoid the fees. This means it will save nothing for most users of these journals (academics) since now they will have to pay to publish and subscribe.

sgent··on A dad took photos of his toddler for a doctor – Google flagged him as a criminal
Maybe CA is different, but in most states small claims can't order equitable remedies (reinstating his account) and can only award money damages.
sgent··on Bitcoin is the only coin the SEC Chair will call a commodity
A commodity doesn't promise a return for holding it, a security does. If I buy a gold bar, in a year I have a gold bar, same with a bushel of wheat, or 1million yen.

Securities use resources to try and generate a return -- companies try to sell a product, bonds generate interest, etc.

sgent··on Ask HN: Is your company giving you a holiday for Juneteenth?
Federal employees get a paid holiday, banks and financial institutions are closed, federal government offices and post offices are closed.

Private companies and state and local governments can make their own choices about whether to be open / closed / allow days off. I live in the south in about a 50% black area and most of our businesses are either closed or giving the people the option to take it off -- many did this even before Biden's declaration.

Also many companies give X paid holidays per year, then allow you to choose which ones you use them for to an extent. I usually work Christmas so I get two paid ones I use for a regional holiday plus an extra floating day off.

sgent··on Ask HN: What news subscription is worth it?
I really like Business Week but IDK how hard it is to cancel (have it through Apple News).
sgent··on Ask HN: What news subscription is worth it?
Excellent for English Language financial news, and probably just OK compared to the NYT for political news.
sgent··on I accidentally loaned all my money to the US government
You have to have a social security number so citizen, current or former resident or work visa holder.
sgent··on Top navy admiral wants rust-free ships
The military must follow all EPA regulations as a general order, but someone at a high enough rank in the pentagon can make an exception for a specific rule/reg.
sgent··on Top navy admiral wants rust-free ships
What percent was spent on capital budgets in 2001 vs 2021? The navy is currently undergoing building 4 or 5 major ship replacement cycles, replacing all of its aircraft (Top 10 airforce in the world), etc. My guess is that most of that budget is mandated by congress for that rather than for bottom paint on supply ships.
sgent··on Increased cardiovascular events in Israel during vaccine rollout and third wave
That statistics are also weird. Not necessarily wrong, but the article doesn't control for the rate of COVID infection in Israel, which is a major cofounder, and of the three authors one is an ER doc and two are Management professors -- no epidemiologists, public health, or other expertise. They also pick seemingly random periods of time to analyze against each other.

My guess is that a more correctly written paper would have been published in a better journal (maybe even Nature) if it got the same results, but it didn't.

sgent··on Half of women will get a false positive 3D mammogram, study finds
Yes, but every positive mammogram means a percentage of people are going to get treatment, including surgery and radiation/chemotherapy, who never would have developed cancer -- and screening more women, especially those who are likely to generate false positives (younger women) is a very big problem in preventative medicine, especially when introducing a new modality like "3d" mammograms. Orac / David Gorski, MD (Surgical Oncologist (Breast)) has blogged extensive. A good if old starting place is https://sciencebasedmedicine.org/a-holiday-round-in-the-mamm...
sgent··on Brandon Sanderson’s Mega-Kickstarter
I doubt RR would ever have gotten this response -- he's never been consistent. John Grisham, Stephen King or the late Tom Clancy may have. They are/were consistent over decades. That said, Grisham's last book deal was huge (over 100 million I believe), and Sanderson absolutely has the clout to negotiate a great deal with Tor if he wanted to go that way.

He did mention that he expects the books to eventually come out as trade books under an imprint (at least the hardback), so the kickstarter is more to allow superfans to buy extras.

sgent··on IRS to adopt Login.gov as user authentication tool
The major problem with login.gov from the IRS' perspective is that it doesn't provide identity verification which is absolutely needed. We will see how they work around that, but they still may have to outsource that to someone like id.me.
sgent··on Going IPv6 Only
My ISP is dual stack (cox), as is AT&T fiber -- but that is only for residential. Almost all consumer gear is IPv6 compatible, much of Cisco Meraki's still isn't or is limited.

It is not all consumer.

sgent··on New atomic clock loses only one second every 300B years
You can buy SDR based GPS receiver (using atomic clocks on satellites) for very cheap. For ~1500 you can buy a 1x PCIe atomic clock and then run a sNTP server to update everything.
sgent··on Industrial ammonia emits more CO2 than other chemical-making reactions (2019)
I don't really care if Exxon is the most valuable company in the world because they discover a way to capture CO2 out of the air and pump it into old wells.

Almost everyone agrees (finally!) global warming is an existential threat for humankind. If you start bringing up other random environmental concerns you lose supporters quickly.

sgent··on FAA Shows ‘Sample NOTAMs’ for Possible 5G Restrictions
Using this band is only an aviation problem if you're in the middle of an approach (approximately 20 miles from a runway, but not a big circle). Hence the location and power limitations.
