sgarrity··on The Modern Mind May Be 100k Years Old (2016)
While I'm not sure it goes back nearly as far as 100,000 years (it's been a while since I read it), the book Guns, Germs, and Steel by Jared Diamond (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guns%2C_Germs%2C_and_Steel) does a compelling job of exploring why complex civilizations arose in some times and places and not in others.

An aspect I found particularly interesting was the idea that basic physical geography could have played a strong role in determining when and where complex civilizations arose.

sgarrity··on MainStreet – $10k to Leave Bay Area
Where does the money come from?
sgarrity··on Show HN: Publisheet – Publish Excel sheets as interactive web pages
Cool idea. I like how focused it is. I'd love to be able to see an example without signing up though.
sgarrity··on Show HN: LessPhone – A minimal Android launcher to reduce phone use
This is literally a $1 problem.
sgarrity··on Show HN: Switch from Medium to your own blog
Well done. Would love to see a similar process that works for a Medium Publication (which has multiple authors, etc.).
sgarrity··on Apple now repairing MacBook keyboards in store, promising next day turnaround
Access to Apple Stores is a particularly difficult issue here in Canada. On the East Coast, I'm a half-day from the nearest Apple Store, and there's no main-in repair program.

My only option is the "apple-approved" is the local Staples. Staples!?

sgarrity··on Apple fans returning new MacBook Pros with Core i9
A Google-AMP version of a story published on Yahoo Finance syndicated from Business Insider. What a time to be alive!

James: Is there a feed for the new blog?
sgarrity··on Duolingo Emailed My Wife with Her Password in the Subject Line
I don't mean to imply that it's necessarily the fault of the individual. Even it the password did get entered into the username field (for example), it could be that an autofill bug, or just bad UI was the cause.

If this was the case, though, it means that there's there may not be reason to assume that passwords are not stored safely.

sgarrity··on Duolingo Emailed My Wife with Her Password in the Subject Line
I'm inclined to trust in the intentions and competence of the people at Duolingo because I've worked with them before, so with that disclaimer:

Is it possible that this person accidentally mixed up the username and password fields when editing their own account? Or, some type of browser auto-fill mixup put the password in the username field when editing the account?

Yes?
sgarrity··on Housing a prisoner in California costs more than a year at Harvard
How much would Harvard cost if you had to keep students from escaping?
sgarrity··on Save Mozilla Firefox's Best Feature
While I appreciate the concern behind the petition, I support the decision to simplify and modernize the architecture in Firefox, even if it does disrupt extensions.

If there was somewhere I could lend my name to say "I support Mozilla making this difficult decision and sticking to it", I would.

sgarrity··on How Children Lost the Right to Roam in Just 4 Generations
It's cars, cars, cars. That's what I'm afraid of for my kids.
sgarrity··on Announcing new tools, forums, and features
Some nice improvements here. It appears, though, that Projects suffer from the same problem we've had with Issues: they are limited to one repo.

I know there are some tools to manage Issues across repos, but for the most part, the tools seem to assume you work on only one repo, or that milestones only affect a single repo.

I would love to see projects/milestones become more capable when dealing with cross-repo issues.

sgarrity··on Ask HN: What is an open-source alternative to Google Home?
For the lazy: https://mycroft.ai/
sgarrity··on Blisk – a browser for web developers
This is a fair question. I also begs the question of why we should trust other browser vendors.

Google's business model seems to be mostly advertising related. This doesn't align particularly well with the interests of individuals using Chrome.

Apple's business model has been more hardware-sales oriented, which might mean their browser exists to keep customers happy with their hardware, which might be a better fit.

Mozilla exists for the public good, thought it does have some financial pressure to keep the lights on.

Disclosure: My business has done work for Mozilla in the past.

sgarrity··on A decade of writing at Mozilla
Great work, much appreciated.
sgarrity··on Open Letter to Mozilla: Bring Back Persona
The best way to get Persona adopted would be to have someone significant other than Mozilla to adopt it. If IE, Safari, or Chrome had adopted, it would have had a great chance at success.
sgarrity··on Dropbox closing Carousel and Mailbox
I haven't used Mailbox, but I'm glad to see Carousel being rolled back into the main Dropbox app. It's already good for photos, and didn't warrant a separate app.
sgarrity··on Nellie Bly

sgarrity··on First 26 pages of Neal Stephenson's new novel Seveneves
I had the exact same experience with Anathem.

I remember around the 200-page point thinking, "ok, now we're getting started."

sgarrity··on GitHub hit by DDoS attack
This is a reminder that having a single service, like Google Analytics or Google Fonts, injected into just about every major site on the web might not be a great idea.
sgarrity··on Forbes 30 under 30 2015
It took me quick a while to figure out that there are actually a bunch of different lists of 30 people (per-category). Frustrating interface.
