Next we'll be discussing horoscopes...
I'm actually surprised there is a maxima between people intersects, or that it carries some meaning.
I wasn't really asking about the front-end, that seems like any of the boilerplate environments would have been equivalent, and just becomes a matter of most familiar, but rather the 'backend'.
Let's say you can write a UI, you have a lat/lon, you have the tweet streams from those around you, how, in a meaningful way do you find similarity? That's the core of your idea. Because Mike and Brett both follow JetBlue what does that tell you? However, if Mike and Brett both RT'd a link about the speed of limit hard limit, it's reasonable to assume they have some similarity in interest. That's the part I was interested in getting your thoughts (mainly because its something I've both thought about and worked on)
I don't have a 4[] account to try it but im curious what you used. Obviously in 8 hours there's only limited technology that can be done, but if you're using python or another language with a rich set of libraries it's possible to do quite a lot during that time. Obviously 8 hours means 6 when you factor in HN time :)
The internet is a rapidly changing place and filled with enormous diversity of people, views and interests.
I feel like this might be true of very simplistic ideas, I don't think it holds in any generally applicable form. Some ideas take time to fully germinate and flourish. Imagine if the original pyramid builder had put down the first level and 'launched'.
I think what is clear and of general applicability is that its important to launch at the right time. Some ideas are timely and need to be synchronized with what else is going on in the internet space. Some ideas are just ahead of their time and premature launch is a waste. Some ideas come too late. Like bringing out a faster fax machine now vs 10 years ago.
The idea that startups should be a frenzy of quickly thrown together systems only holds because they are built using tools that are solid and robust.
That said, your site looks fabulous, it has all the charm and modern design of tumblr and the right colors, the right voice and just a great looking site.
Seriously though this is misguided. PGO is clearly a step in the right direction but its simply deferred static optimization. Either you optimize in C at the compile time, or with PGO by running a few statistically representative executions, but these are not dynamic.
The only way to make truly dynamic optimizations is by having a runtime environment and code that is interpreted.
The argument that its not often necessary is a different argument and with only a few moments thought can be seen to be untrue. Take for example and strstr like operation that you naively implement using by walking through the source string. Now let's say you do this a lot, all is good because the input is short, now you receive (in a parser for example) something much much bigger. A JIT has privy information and can make determinations that building a index on the source string to make repeated finds faster is better, C does not, even with PGO because you may never have run a test that encounters this situation.
I thinking writing a system to identify topics on HN day after day and try to correlate this with other events might be interesting, is it for example all reactionary, is it some form of herding, does it follow topics on other similar forums, or just pseudo-random.
Back to the topic. There is one definitive C resource, K&R.
What you cannot do in C/C++ that you can in Java is respond to program inefficiencies at runtime, with runtime knowledge.
Encouraging us to get one for the Blackberry is all well and good, except its pre-order only, not shipping yet.
I wish the blackberry 'edition' was $99 (for black.) Then I'd get one. It seems disproportionate to the blackberry cost itself at $199
Add to that, its also just really beautiful here and we don't spend half the year buried under snow or sweltering in heat. And of course SF women are the best in the country :)
But RF was just being a well deserved smartass. Besides, who would ever interview RF, it would a waste of time, Unless you have Newton, Einstein and Larry & Sergei already on your payroll just give the man an office, s stapler and let him do whatever comes to mind.
These are their accounts to loose and I don't see why this is even news, or a blog post. So what if you can't come up with a name that sounds real.
For a q&a site these guys certainly get a lot of HN attention.
Provided porting an app to a new platform isn't too arduous then it could work out. Games especially, they are typically very easily ported since most run atop game engines that are very easily recompiled.
That said, I think Apple will eclipse HP with iPad2 and they have the 'cool' brand recognition. Think HP and you think printers still. Blackberry on the other hand...
Let's wait for the battery spec to really see how this thing will work out. Apple cut many many corners to give the ipad fabulous battery life and the video I have seen of the touchpad makes it look really slow, very unsnappy performance. Possibly they are running developer builds and it will be faster when it ships.
