sf_rob··on Ask HN: What browser extensions are a must-have in 2021?
* Stylus - super useful. I auto color my dev/qa/prod environments so I don't do anything stupid. I color code the stocks in my brokerage account by strategy. I fix some of the terrible pastel colors in Microsoft products.

* Tab ReTitle+ - useful when you have multiple tabs open with identical titles.

* Zoom Tab auto-close+ - Closes Zoom tabs once opened.

* ColorZilla - A quick color-picker. I do some light web-dev and it's marginally more convenient than inspecting.

* Firefox Color - Quick browser changes, also do some custom stuff in UserChrome.css

* History Cleaner - Deletes my history after x weeks.

* LastPass - Just what I thought was best in 2016, not sure what's best these days but I'm somewhat satisfied

I find Firefox's built-in tracker blockers adequate for my usage these days (used to use uBlock Origin). Also, Firefox containers is a game changer for isolating work/personal or dev/qa.

I would also recommend learning how to write/use Bookmarklets and edit UserChrome.css for greater productivity/customization.

[+]Some of the above are not large enough to be audited by Mozilla, but the source code is on Github.

sf_rob··on Brave Search replaces Google as default search engine in the Brave browser
>they were flying high.

Per StatCounter, Mozilla's market share decline started in early 2010 (including mobile, late 2010 for desktop only) and Eich was fired (resigned, but that's BS) in early 2014.

Eich was still at Mozilla (not CEO) when Mozilla under-invested in desktop performance, failed to get Firefox OS off the ground, and most likely laid the groundwork to switching to Yahoo.

sf_rob··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
I agree but coming from the perspective that the M1 Air is absolutely crazy value if you aren't constantly doing intensive tasks and if you don't mind paying less to have dongles.
sf_rob··on An Open Letter Against Apple's Privacy-Invasive Content Scanning Technology
Outside of the privacy debate on this, I cannot overstate how dumb it was of Apple to announce this and sexual image ML in the same press release. It's resulting in an errant and vastly exagerated understanding of it by members of the public.
sf_rob··on For developers, Safari is crap and outdated
Yes, which is acceptable, but then if the extension you want is not in the curated sections you have to search for it as a general Mac App, AFAIK there is no "Safari Extension" filter.

This led me to accidentally install the LastPass desktop app, which I have much less in; I didn't see a LastPass webext despite being available on other WebKit browsers.

sf_rob··on For developers, Safari is crap and outdated
I just got an M1 Mac after years on Ubuntu, and decided to give Safari a go. I literally could not figure out how to search for an extension (the extension menu's search box searches the app store). I'm probably missing something obvious, but I'm quick to reject unintuitive consumer software so I'm typing this from Firefox.

I know Firefox will inevitably decline one day, but honestly it's still a great browser and the compat complaints are over-blown.

Apple's hardware and integration is incredible, but I don't understand why people like their software on its own.

sf_rob··on A foreign seller has hijacked my Amazon Klein bottle listing
This was a while ago, but I got a counterfeit fitness band (it told me to download a random APK from a 3rd party website) from Amazon, and they repeatedly told me to resolve it directly with the seller who, surprise surprise, were not interested in issuing a refund.
sf_rob··on Ford unveils the F-150 Lightning, its all-electric pickup truck
There's already a shift to customer experience oriented gas stations on road trip routes. I would happily spend a half hour at a Sheetz, Buckees, Wawa, etc. I'd prefer a proper restaurant but there's room for both.
sf_rob··on TikToker makes ‘scamcoin’ as a joke and within an hour it’s worth $70M
Someone minted 1 million Neeraj Agrawal (cryptocurrency advocate* who's big on Twitter) NFTs, sent him 999,999 without his consent, and kept the other to sell. Which leads to the interesting question, should Neeraj report the 999,999 as a gift receipt if they have some value, and is he in a bad position that the tax value of the gift is large due to the price being determined by the 1 that was sold?

(I don't understand NFTs so I may be incorrect on details).

sf_rob··on Products purchased at Apple Store in India cannot be refunded or exchanged
Please don't be ashamed of your ethnicity/race/geography. You are an individual and ought to be treated by yourself and others as such. All groups have their cultural and historical baggage. I say this as someone who had quite a bad experience on work trips to India haha.
sf_rob··on Ask HN: What tech job would let me get away with the least real work possible?
My buddy worked IT infrastructure at a major public university and would work 3 days a week but spread out his deployments for the write-ups that were used to evaluate his performance. The pay wasn't great so he left, but it was a great gig for a while.
sf_rob··on Beyond Meat signs global supply deals with McDonald’s, KFC and Pizza Hut
I must be vague, but my friend works at a fast food chain's corporate office and said that their strategy team was the one pushing for alternative meats for supply chain alternatives more than dietary preferences.
sf_rob··on Starlink is now Accepting General Pre-orders
I could have definitely phrased the title better. The point being that they are out of limited Beta and rolling our first come first serve by region.
sf_rob··on Starlink is now Accepting General Pre-orders
Thanks! It was new to me and I didn't see any posts at a glance. Guess I'll leave it because there's momentum.
sf_rob··on Starlink is now Accepting General Pre-orders
I believe that this is new. I received an email from them about opening orders by address on a first come first serve basis with $99 deposit.
sf_rob··on Show HN: M1 Chart – The stock market adjusted for the US-dollar money supply
Why would you adjust for usd money supply? The only reason my (uninformed) self sees is that it’s arbitrary but fits a fiscal Hawk narrative. Fwiw I’m worried about inflation, but this seems uninteresting.
sf_rob··on Terraria on Stadia cancelled after developer's Google account gets locked
Agreed about small devs, but other small devs also have to make countless decisions about which platforms/products to use for their app/platform/website. At the very least, Google should be worried that a good tie-breaker is "Is it a Google platform?".
sf_rob··on Intel Problems
Isn't most of M1's performance success due to being a SoC / increasing component locality/bandwidth? I think ARM vs x86 performance on its own isn't a disadvantage. Instead the disadvantages are a bigger competitive landscape (due to licensing and simplicity), growing performance parity, and SoCs arguable being contrary to x86 producers' business models.
sf_rob··on USV Climate Fund
Major tangent, but a product that I can't believe doesn't seem to exist is window fans (not AC units) with passive shutters to prevent air leakage when not in use. I've actually built an exhaust fan in our rental house that somewhat meets these specs.

There are so many old houses that rely on window fans for fresh air or exhaust. The fact that these fans are literally just open fans with all the leakage that entails is quite inefficient.

This seems like a product with the same BOM cost as an existing popular product but with incremental energy benefits and no need for construction.

sf_rob··on Amazon disallows pointing out paid reviews
Honestly, the product page is the appropriate place for a review of this nature. You are informing other consumers to discount the weight of the reviews to a greater extent than they might otherwise.

I've been burned by this previously and had the review removed. My review was even about how the product was subpar and I suspect it was the highest rated in category because of the offer.

sf_rob··on Ask HN: Am I too late for the “Data Science” wave?
As with any role/skillset, the explosion of data science demand has lead to an explosion of "data scientist" supply. When demand was greatly exceeding supply, you naturally saw the definition and requirements of data science roles loosening. When I contact companies about DS roles, I like to ask what they mean by "data science". Often times you would find roles that were some mix of: SQL analyst (no DB admin skills required), Python hacker (no "real" software eng skills required), and basic stats (can you calculate a confidence interval?).

What I've seen in more recent years with growing supply and maturation of departments is the need for specialization. Can you do hardcore statistics? Are you an ML practitioner? Are you a data architect? Basically, the blended role DS hacker is more commonly (and correctly IMO) relegated to a various analytical and strategy roles.

Honestly you haven't missed the boat and you don't need a formal education, but I would highly recommend having a depth of skills in one or more areas of data science generally with an example or two to back it up. Basic skills are just table stakes at this point.

sf_rob··on Google Sunsets Google Cloud Print
I love Google sheets but I also work with large enough data sets that it regularly freezes up which is always associated with a frustrating “lost connection” message. I’ve been shifting more and more to Excel because of this. It’s pretty funny to move away from Google because my data is too big.
sf_rob··on iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro
Honestly, the only feature that makes me lean towards the SE2 for my next phone is that I want a fingerprint reader since face masks have ruined Face ID
sf_rob··on Google to buy 6.6% stake in ADT in home security push
Hopefully this is a small enough partnership/stake to not torpedo the Samsung Smartthings / ADT partnership. I'm not a user of the latter, but appreciate the growing ecosystem.
sf_rob··on Google announces Pixel 5, Pixel 4A 5G, and Pixel 4A
>The camera and its clean version of Android are the main ways that Google is aiming to differentiate the Pixel 4A from the likes of the OnePlus Nord, Samsung Galaxy S71, and iPhone SE.

I think it's weird to include the SE on that list. iOS seems like a great choice for a "clean" OS and the SE's camera, while not the highest end or with several sensors, is pretty great. A better emphasis would be storage and RAM which is pretty incredible and the inclusion of a headphone jack.

sf_rob··on Google announces Pixel 5, Pixel 4A 5G, and Pixel 4A
They aren't durable in my experience though. Although most apple cords have issues with the connection "neck" (not sure of the actual nomenclature).
sf_rob··on Apple reports Q3 results
Market cap is set by marginal prices, so supply of uninvested capital isn't super relevant and might even increase volatility due to lower liquidity.
sf_rob··on Organizing a Group Buy of Flour
Massdrop (drop.com) had a similar model, but they seem to be in the process of becoming a more traditional retailer.
sf_rob··on Three free meals available daily for any New Yorker
You're implicitly arguing that SNAP should have fiscal cliffs. Fiscal cliffs are a symptom of a poorly designed welfare program.
sf_rob··on Tracking Coronavirus by Smell Test
I lost my sense of smell and was very tired 3 weeks ago, but otherwise I had no symptoms. I'm super curious to find out whether I had it already, although my SO was asymptomatic in the same timeframe so it seems unlikely.
