seviu··on Apple testing new App Store design that blurs the line between ads and results
Not only that, it’s dangerous too specially if you have a family account with a single credit card.

Apple doesn’t care about quality.

seviu··on If you put Apple icons in reverse it looks like someone getting good at design
The fact that since Tahoe everything is a squircle kills me. I can’t visually find my apps anymore.

It takes me several seconds to find an existing opened app when I hit cmd tab, it has been months already, I use my Mac for work, I know this stuff.

It’s not just the new design but also something else, like if part of my Mac lost its soul.

seviu··on I spent a week without IPv4 (2023)
And despite that, the place where I work, has disabled ipv6, rendering our development machines useless for trivial tasks such as debugging our iOS app on a device (which uses ipv6 under the hood)

Reasons given: the security policies say ipv6 is not safe enough.

seviu··on Estimates are difficult for developers and product owners
Surprisingly prob yes

But still we are much better at estimating complexity

Time estimations usually tends to be overly optimistic. I don’t know why. Maybe the desire to please the PO. Or the fact that we never seem to take into account factors such as having a bad day, interruptions, context switch.

T-shirt sizes or even story points are way more effective.

The PO can later translate it to time after the team reaches certain velocity.

I have been developing software for over twenty years, I still suck at giving time estimates.

seviu··on Estimates are difficult for developers and product owners
I am in a project where we have to give estimates in hours and days.

Needless to say we always underestimate. Or overestimate. Best case we use the underestimated task as buffer for the more complex ones.

And it has been years.

Giving estimations based on complexity would at least give a clear picture.

I honestly don’t know what the PO and TL gains with this absurd obscenity.

seviu··on Steam Machine
FIFA is another one that comes to mind, or however they call it these days.

Also from EA

seviu··on iOS 26.2 to allow third-party app stores in Japan ahead of regulatory deadline
Apple priorities are and have always been:

Apple first Users second Developers third

Not only that they still live with ptsd from the times when they almost disappeared, and will do everything in their power to keep as much revenue as they can squeeze.

Because of this, the Japan appstore will be as crappy as the european one. And the apps as surpar as the ones from the appstore.

Because let’s be honest, apps quality have gone downhill

seviu··on Trump pardons convicted Binance founder
You would be surprised…

Regarding CZ and Binance and the Trumps, they have kind of a symbiotic relationship.

After Binance and CZ pleaded guilty to money laundering in November 2023, for which they paid over $4 billions in fines, WLFI (which is a clone of AAVE belonging to the Trump family) launched a stablecoin called USD1. Magically on March 2025, $2 billion flowed into Binance through MGX, a state backed Abu Dhabi fund, later revealed to have been paid in USD1 (two months before it was unveiled and without at the time no effective audits), effectively propping WLFI’s coin (backed, unbacked, nobody knows, I assume backed). CZ applied for a presidential pardon inmediately after in May 2025.

WLFI now gets to earn about $60–80 million per year in yield from the USD1…

…As long as Binance doesn’t redeem those $2 billion.

I still don’t know what MGX got out of this deal, but I am pretty sure they didn’t walk empty handed.

seviu··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
I can’t even login, I get the internal error treatment. This is on Amazon.de
seviu··on AWS multiple services outage in us-east-1
I can't log in to my AWS account, in Germany, on top of that it is not possible to order anything or change payment options from amazon.de.

No landing page explaining services are down, just scary error pages. I thought account was compromised. Thanks HN for, as always, being the first to clarify what's happening.

Scary to see that in order to order from Amazon Germany, us-east1 must be up. Everything else works flawlessly but payments are a no go.

seviu··on iPad Pro with M5 chip
A generalization I would say

I really dig that Oled screen

seviu··on iPad Pro with M5 chip
I really want this but I can’t justify such a machine just for watching YouTube.

I cannot even give it to my kids since I don’t have multiple accounts with it.

Kind of sad that the most interesting device Apple has will never show its true potential due to their greed.

seviu··on Bots are getting good at mimicking engagement
I once worked for the yellow pages in Switzerland. Our paid clients had a dashboard which reported how many users visited their business entry.

We at engineering decided to filter out bots. Figures fell dramatically by more than 50%.

In less that a day business mandated us to remove the filter.

Bots are real people after all

seviu··on Everything that's wrong with Google Search in one image
When we propose alternatives the answer is that they want to protect customers.

But they don’t protect their cash cow from massive daily influxes of scam apps. It’s better one million scam apps generating 50k per month and drowning my two or three apps for which I spent months of work than a few thousand quality apps from which everybody would profit.

Let’s be real it takes a special kind of mad developer to try to make a business that relies on the AppStore. First if you are unlucky you get rejected on day one or two. And if you aren’t and are wildly popular you risk Apple copying your business model.

Because deep down some people at Apple despise the App Store developers and think they can do much better. This has been at the core of Apple culture for ages.

Anyway we legit indie developers who care about our products get drowned in irrelevance. Who cares.

seviu··on Baldur's Gate 3 Steam Deck – Native Version
I had to free 100GB so that it has enough disk space.

I am amazed this game is even playable on the steam deck. Was trying to find an excuse to play it after cyberpunk. I guess this one it is…

seviu··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
Must admit it isn’t

Usdc is audited by Deloitte on a monthly basis.

It would be pretty stupid for Paolo to end up being naked, now that his business is printing money left and right.

To make it clear I am not pro tether, I am against visceral hate which was justified years ago but I feel it isn’t anymore. Tether gained my sympathy by freezing quite promptly funds from various hacks.

Circle on the contrary have failed every single time.

https://cryptobriefing.com/circle-lazarus-group-accusations/

Anyways this is totally unrelated

It will make for a good Netflix documentary once they get their audit

seviu··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
I don’t discuss the past. In 2017 it was tether the one that caused the bubble that put BTC at almost 20k, by issuing tokens backed by nothing

Now they generate more than 10B per year in profits. And they have been using that to collateralize their usdt

It’s clear they are now fully backed. Another question is whether they want to comply with regulations (they don’t comply with MiCA, I doubt USDC does either) but that’s another question

Hate it or love it, they aren’t going anywhere anymore

seviu··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
That link contains audits, and proof of reserves. What are you talking about.

They got bad rep with zero proof

seviu··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
I gave you the most dramatic example. So far no undercollateralized, algorithmically backed $1 stablecoin has sustained a reliable peg at scale over multiple years.

Zero. Nada. There was always somebody somewhere exploiting it.

TerraUSD USN USDN Basic Cash

All failures so far, every time a death spiral.

FRAX started as algorithmic and had to move to over collateralization

Same with DAI

You really can’t call them like that once they become backed by USDC

seviu··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
You would be surprised about tether though

They are now really backed. It might be they weren’t. Now they definitely are.

https://tether.to/en/transparency/?tab=usdt

All these years all this Fud and so far nobody demonstrated what you clam.

They are also the faster to block their stablecoin whenever there is a hack.

seviu··on Stripe Launches L1 Blockchain: Tempo
Dai might have been algorithmically backed but it’s now a flavor of usdc since it’s backed in its majority by usdc.

So far all algorithmically backed stablecoins have failed. Remember Terra Luna.

seviu··on FreeDroidWarn
Out of all the models I saw, SailfishOS is the only one that ticks all the boxes for me.

Wish there were other alternatives. PinePhone Pro got discontinued. This is truly a duopoly.

seviu··on FreeDroidWarn
I don’t need a bank for my daily driver and I can have a backup phone. You can get fairly recent Android devices at a fraction of the cost of a new one.

And if you still can, use the website.

I also had enough. Switching to Linux pretty soon.

seviu··on Amazon has mostly sat out the AI talent war
and despite all this, I would pay 240$ a year so that Siri can reliably do what Alexa does today

oh the irony

seviu··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
Genuine question and some random thoughts please downvote if you think I am ranting too much: one argument played by Google on this is that they want to protect users from malware, specially for banking apps, etc. However my queations/two cents regarding this:

Banks offer web frontends and many make you use 2FA and even hardware keys, which work on phones. We have been doing e-banking even before smartphone phones existed. We still do. On our full of malware and virus windows desktops.

These mobile apps are in reality web frontends disguised as mobile apps with biometrics on top of it. Nothing else really. I develop an iOS app for a bank. It’s really like that.

Despite that I have to obfuscate the binaries, check for cydia, make sure I am not jaibtoken and all kinds of useless stuff.

When you buy a PlayStation you are buying a piece of hardware that Sony sells you at a break even or a loss so that you can buy their games. You are not buying your hardware. You are buying means to run video games on a piece of hardware Sony is selling to you.

When I buy an iPhone I am paying a lot of money for my pocket computer, my internet communicator. The margins are so big, it doesn’t even make sense to squeeze more out of them.

When I buy an Android phone I fail to see the end game except that Google wants to have absolute control over everything I do in my life.

I cannot really deny them their right to do whatever they want.

Still I can’t see really how they want to protect users by having full control. That’s a big lie.

seviu··on We should have the ability to run any code we want on hardware we own
I seriously doubt they can restrict sideloading through Google play services.

But if they do then it’s worse than what I thought.

seviu··on Altered states of consciousness induced by breathwork accompanied by music
When you say you used them… What made you stop?

Aside from that it would be nice if somebody knows about a meta quest app that might achieve similar effects. Is that even possible?

seviu··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
Hunting for one rn

Thanks for the heads up

seviu··on We regret but have to temporary suspend the shipments to USA
I live in Switzerland and Swiss post, which is the state owned postal service, does not ship to the US anymore.

Here is the official link:

https://www.post.ch/en/about-us/media/press-releases/2025/us...

Pretty crazy if you ask me

seviu··on Google will allow only apps from verified developers to be installed on Android
It’s an excuse they use. The don’t care if your average grandmother gets infected by a virus.

This trust me bro, our App Store is safer is just getting on my nerves. Every day we get malware popping on both app stores.

Time to switch
