seviu··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
Not as fast for me. I was able to snatch a spark before the horrible price hike, and I have it at 40/50tok/sec. Before I had the great 3090 setup which is what led me to get the spark. That 3090 is now relegated to creating videos of my kids doing dumb things.

I now backordered two more sparks, before the hike... hoping they will honor the agreed price and dont cancel on me. They should arrive in a month,

Its evidently clear the frontier labs won't keep on giving us cheap inference for much longer. I also watch in disbelief how people say a sub is cheaper, which probably is. But you loose on so many other things (privacy, predictability, censorship...)

seviu··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
They could easily give us a system that can be easily upgraded. At least the SSD.

And I would inmediately put an order for a 256GB Mac Studio with 1TB SSD, if I were to know that SSD can be upgraded later on. I dont even mind if I have to buy premium SSD upgrades from Apple.

But locking the system in and knowing the decision is final? No thanks. And no way I am shelling 18k or whatever outrageous sum they ask for 8 extra TB.

It might be they are leaving money off the table with their greed.

seviu··on Turn off Apple Intelligence on macOS 27 and get its disk space back
Because Apple keeps on selling devices with 256GB SSD and this takes between 8-14GB of very valuable disk space, for a feature that most of us don't really use.

It doesn't help that Apple never understood what Siri is and how it should work.

seviu··on Run Qwen 3.8 Flash Next (125B) on consumer hardware (RTX 4090) at 100T/s
Unrelated... just use your just locally installed qwen 3.8 and instruct it to figure out why you arent at 16x.

For me, I didnt know I was on 4x and I was able to, giving it enough permissions, with a good harness like PI, to figure things out and go 4x -> 8x -> 16x.

It probably will take some opening the case and switching ssds around, but it's amazing how powerful these models have become.

seviu··on We're going to need default hard budget caps on pretty much everything
As somebody developing hobby apps, there are things i just can’t use. Take an example cloudflare workers. I recently worked on a poc for an app. I ended up hosting it at home due to the uncertainty.

The caps were very generous but I wasn’t going to spend a minute worrying about what if a malicious actor took over

seviu··on MiMo-v2.6-Pro: Intelligence, Performance and Price Analysis
I have a 20x sub and it feels like the 20$ sub eight months ago. I can easily burn it in an afternoon, and I don't have many projects.

According to API usage, they cut you off at around the equivalent of 900$ of API usage, whatever that means. It's very difficult to track all this, and very subjective. What validates me is that of all my friends I am not the only one.

I can only imagine the 100$ users must be feeling the rug being pulled even harder.

Anyway, this has led me to get a Spark, and a second is on the way.

seviu··on Ask HN: Is it impossible to disable Siri on macOS 27?
I still have to find anybody using Siri on his Mac

Please tell me what the use case is. Somebody somewhere must find it useful otherwise it would not be so prominent.

This a genuine question btw not trying to be sarcastic or dismissive

seviu··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
He is a smart guy, and his podcast is good, if you can switch your brain off whenever they talk Trump and politics I mean.

His posture about all this nonsense has been clear for months already

seviu··on David Sacks: OpenAI and Anthropic Don't Need Regulations to Pace Frontier Models
I believe the Chinese government fully supports for the American AI labs to pace the frontier, no need to enter an agreement with them on that respect.
seviu··on Major Math Breakthrough by AI
The whole story

https://cims.nyu.edu/~tristanb/statement.pdf

seviu··on Major Math Breakthrough by AI
Title of the post is not really about a breakthrough by AI but a human breakthrough plus an ongoing dispute where the authors claim OpenAI trained on their private chats and then tried to claim the proof as their own.

Something like “Tristan Buckmaster and Levent Alpoge on AI-assisted fluid dynamics proofs and OpenAI” would have been a more appropriate non clickbaity title.

The proof was not made by AI but AI was used to create it. For what I gather the OpenAI threw massive compute to try to front run the authors and proceeded to blackmail them.

This is a Millenium price proof btw.

seviu··on OpenAI begins rolling out GPT-6 Astra
In omp you can also have the advisor role, which is off by default, you can enable it with /advisor command. It acts as a model that reviews the default agent's work in the background.

I am omp pilled, but as the other comments say, any good harness lets you do this in one or the other way.

unrelated: all my homies use their claude subs with omp, and aside from sometimes having to rety the connections, it works, and nobody got banned (yet)

seviu··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
The cleaning cloth went down in price about 50%

There is some consolation there

seviu··on New Mac Studio with M5 Max and M5 Ultra
A part of my brain can’t process acquiring a Mac Mini M5 Pro knowing that they sell M6 despite being aware that it is just a weaker processor.

It will get worse with the MacBook ultra rocking a M5 too.

Apple’s marketing department is gonna kill me.

seviu··on Proposal to prohibit vibe coded projects from being hosted on Sourcehut
'They are an environmental catastrophe'

This for me the main source of concern. I am having a blast vibe coding. I understand my job is at risk. But I am totally oblivious to the fact that they are accelerating climate change.

seviu··on UEFA and its national associations will not participate in FIFA competitions
FIFA is also a terrible employer

Got friends working for them as developers. They ran away. In months

seviu··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
The resolution but specially the pass through is what kills it for me.

Fix those and I am a buyer, at any price.

seviu··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
I did it, it’s possible.

It’s also a terrible experience. Pixelated. Laggy. Can’t see where the keyboard is… it’s half baked.

I can work max one hour then I give up.

seviu··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
I keep on hearing it’s a flop, but where I live, Switzerland, they don’t sell it. So I can’t really say.

And I am not even talking about the badly taken product decisions for such a great headset but… how can they get devs onboarded for an app ecosystem for a device that can only be bought in a handful of countries?

Clearly Apple sold it and did their best so that it fails.

seviu··on Apple targets dozens of OpenAI employees with legal letters
I am not the one who says that

seviu··on Apple targets dozens of OpenAI employees with legal letters
Oh it isn’t

This has Ternus driven all over it

seviu··on Apple targets dozens of OpenAI employees with legal letters
Tang and Ternus where the candidates in 2021 as head of hardware engineering as Dan Riccio left. Tang lost and went to OpenAI.

It’s well known within Apple that they hate each other.

seviu··on Apple targets dozens of OpenAI employees with legal letters
There is absolutely no evidence at all. Apple is going to loose this. The beef is real, and though Tim is acting CEO till the 1st of September I am ready to bet anything that the order to sue comes from Ternus. Specially considering that there is no evidence of wrongdoing or stealing.

And if there is, tell me what.

John Grubes might be a better authority than me in these matters and he seems to share my opinion. You can listen to it here:

seviu··on Kimi K3 may have distilled an unreleased Anthropic model
Fake news sorry please delete this post
seviu··on Kimi K3 may have distilled an unreleased Anthropic model
Translation:

BREAKING: Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei submits report to U.S. Congress: "After investigation, we have discovered that Kimi K3 may have distilled a model that Anthropic has yet to develop and complete."

Congressman presses: "Your model isn't even finished yet—how could it be distilled?"

Amodei: "That's exactly why we're holding this hearing."

AI safety field faces new challenge: Future Model Leakage

seviu··on Apple targets dozens of OpenAI employees with legal letters
This is John Ternus having a beef with Tang Tan. It’s widely known they both competed for the role of CEO. Tim Cook would never have started this.

It shows a level of pettiness and arrogance which I never expected to see from Apple.

I can’t put myself in the mind of John, but he clearly hated Tang.

From outside and with a parent’s perspective this looks like my kids throwing a tantrum.

John must be thinking he is the new Steve Jobs (Steve would definitely do this)

seviu··on Apple's new SpeechAnalyzer API, benchmarked against Whisper and its predecessor
Nothing really, except that I get to play with SpeechAnalyzer APIs, foundation models, translations. It’s basically my playground where to try all things. Been listening a lot of Chinese podcasts lately, transcribed and translated by local models.

Edit: all that said, the app is irrelevant. What I want to say is that live transcripts on iOS using Apples frameworks works very well. Only thing I miss is diarization support.

seviu··on Apple's new SpeechAnalyzer API, benchmarked against Whisper and its predecessor
Been using it for a podcast app I have been developing for half a year lol (I hope I publish it by version 27) and I can confirm it’s real fast.

Splitting the audio in multiple segments and firing it up without hitting the maximum limit of concurrent decoding streams makes it blazing fast. Fair enough you loose the cut, but it’s good enough for just podcast. In one minute it chews through one hour of audio. This on an iPhone 17 Pro.

seviu··on Zuckerberg says AI agent development going slower than expected
All this is happening because many Silicon Valley CEOs are totally disconnected from humanity. I actually dont think Mark even sees his employees as human beings but rather as training data from a future where AI agents will just replace most of his workforce.

Regardless of wether this is right or wrong, and not even getting into the correctness of such claims, the fact is that he fired 10000 employees, from what used to be, from the outside, an engineering first company. And he sent hints to the market that more layoffs would come as agents become better.

The first problem is: it looks we still need human beings, AI is great, but its not as awesome as we initially thought.

The second problem is: all people who can leave are leaving, and those who can't are looking for a job. Humans, we need stability, a steady flow of income, and joy in what we do. By firing people and putting them in permanent observation, for an AI that will replace them, he is destroying any reason anybody would ever want to work for such a company.

Mark would make a great Lumon CEO

seviu··on Android Developer Verification: Threat masquerading as Protection
If that ever happens (what am I saying we all know it’s happening). Then just a phone in the drawer I use it just for such administrative tasks.
