sevenzero··on AI handles incidents, engineers lose touch with their systems
>Why not? Because even pre-AI, very few companies spend time practicing restoring their backups, or disaster recovery, or picking infrequently-used runbooks to practice, or seeing whether they can easily rotate secrets without downtime, or trying to redploy the system onto another vendor's cloud/platform, or, or, or...

Exact. Let insurance cover it, say sorry to your customers twice and shwoop never happened.

sevenzero··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
I just want to start /claude in my CLI and start working. It worked fine before, why do I have to opt out of shit now? Opt in for this type of stuff sounds way more reasonable.
sevenzero··on Why does Opus 5 feel worse to work with?
I hate that it now tries to verify frontend behavior through a headless browser instead of just looking at the code...
sevenzero··on Flutter 3.47
I see, thanks for clarifying!
sevenzero··on uBlock Origin Is Giving Up the Fight to Keep Ads Off Facebook
I see, these are valid. Especially in smaller communities in rural areas ads can really help bringing people together. I live in a small village since about 2 years now and have NO idea what's going on here (as I don't watch/read ads). Sometimes thats sad, but usually I want to be left alone anyway. A farmers market sounds cool though.

I'd categorize job postings a bit differently, if Facebook was full of (legitimate) job postings I think it would be less of an issue. I agree on all the gambling stuff you wrote.

sevenzero··on Flutter 3.47
I see that as a win

>real native components

Since when does React Native use real native components? Last time I've checked it wasn't capable of doing ANYTHING with my phones NFC scanner or native camera...

With flutter I can just build a Kotlin component and integrate it easily into my app. Also Flutters performance is extremely good, I dont know what you are on about. Our app is used on extremely old phones and has great performance. (I am not even a professional android/flutter dev, so I didnt optimize for performance).

Give me 1-2 examples of useful info we can get from ads?
sevenzero··on The Water Footprint of AI
>They are not drying up because of AI datacenters

I am aware and never claimed that. Though, the global push towards mega factories, data centers and whatnot does not help the situation. Lots of places here in Germany already struggle with having enough water, so the mindset to "lets just build a Tesla mega factory here" is something I never understood. Can't be that different for data centers. We should use our resources smartly, not for profit margins.

sevenzero··on The Water Footprint of AI
Misconception of the year. If you can guarantee the steam it produces rains down in areas that actually re-join the water cycle easily, you might be right (even though you still have to cover the just in time demand). You can not guarantee that though.

Best regards, European person where lakes dry out atm.

sevenzero··on As AI eats the web, the internet’s collective memory is disappearing
> a yearly printed book with verified, accurate information

Seems difficult to produce nowadays as even well researched topics are constantly attacked. Climate change papers as a small example.

sevenzero··on Managing AI Coding Costs at Scale
>Since software is still a winner-takes-all market, the mass-production property of software doesn't really matter.

This could not be further from the truth. It might be true if the software works without supervisors in a B2C scenario where everything is self explanatory and nothing can go wrong, movie streaming services for example, and even these have tons of variants and multiple big players racking up billions in market share. So even there "winner-takes-all" does not apply. It gets even worse in B2B software, as there is SO MUCH software thats commonly used and needs tons of supervising by experienced devs. If we had a "winner-takes-all" market a lot more software would already be dead. And a lot of companies would have way less options when adopting new software for something.

sevenzero··on I won't read LLM authored fiction
Thanks for showing again that people on this platform have little to no empathy, only care about businesses and money and have no understanding of art in general :-) Shows why I don't befriend tech savvy people usually.
sevenzero··on I won't read LLM authored fiction
>Everyone borrows or steals from prior art

We are products of our environment, we learned what art is by having other peoples art as reference to "what art is". So it's only natural that our own art is inspired by other peoples work. People usually do not directly steal an artstyle though and if so, they are usually called out for that. LLMs directly steal from artists works hallucinating them into a pile of stolen bullshit that roughly fits the given prompt.

sevenzero··on I won't read LLM authored fiction
I am afraid a lot of non-fiction is also AI generated slop...

"Hey ChatGPT here is a checklist of some facts, here are some sources, write a text about this"

Ultimately resulting in the same boring writing style over and over again for non-fiction.

Personally I enjoy the personal note in non-fiction. Political Girl by Maria Aljochina wouldn't be the same if it was produced by AI.

sevenzero··on I won't read LLM authored fiction
>Without an interesting human me art loses all magic to me.

Thanks for mentioning this. I have been in so many arguments with tech savvy people who simply can't grasp this concept.

Additionally to that, if you're taking shortcuts with AI rather than actually learning a skill (writing, painting, drawing, producing music, etc...) how can you even feel good about your "art"? It's not special, it's stolen effortless slop. It's like playing a video game and getting that "early access equipment" that just lets you steamroll through the game without challenge.

sevenzero··on The software group Palantir paid just £2M in corporation tax in the UK in 2024
My whole line of reasoning makes perfect sense given I worked in trades doing exactly what I talk about in a country with one of the most complicated tax systems there is. Prices are calculated by adding your costs into the base price which is common sense. If you do that you can actually calculate the amount of coffees you need to sell to turn a profit and if the business even makes sense in the first place.

Every unit of coffee you sell should turn a profit. Which in turn should be taxed. Even cigarettes that probably only turn micro cents profit should be taxed by per unit sold. They even are, given their sales are heavily regulated.

No company is giving out "free" products without making a profit just to go even on their initial investment.

sevenzero··on The software group Palantir paid just £2M in corporation tax in the UK in 2024
Everything you named should be included in the price you charge for a cup of coffee. So the money you extract from it, minus the cost you named is your profit. If you dont make profit on that sale, I have bad news for your business idea.

>Yep, you could do this. Only problem is, uh, you never make any money. If you're running a hobby or something, that's fine, but most people owning business want to realize some profit...

Debt is technically profit in that sense, as long as you can pay it back.

sevenzero··on No Data Centers in My Backyard
Noise pollution is a real issue, even for data centers that is "humming quietly". Same for its energy consumption. Water cooling is another issue, given that lots of the steam a data center generates can rain down in places that wont make the water re-join the water lifecycle easily.
sevenzero··on The software group Palantir paid just £2M in corporation tax in the UK in 2024
Timescale has nothing to do with this though. You're Starbucks, you sell me a cup of coffee, you make profit from that cup of coffee, you pay taxes on that singular profit.

What your companies bank account states is not what I care about as tax collector. The profits you make have nothing to do with the equipment you bought earlier to even start the business. Otherwise you could simply: Buy expensive stuff -> even out with profits, buy expensive stuff again, even out with profits and never pay taxes.

sevenzero··on The software group Palantir paid just £2M in corporation tax in the UK in 2024
So I'll expect not having to pay VAT next time I buy from a franchised business operating in my country given that all of them usually make little to no profits officially.
sevenzero··on The software group Palantir paid just £2M in corporation tax in the UK in 2024
>so it makes sense you don't pay taxes until you make back that $100m you lost

LOL. You losing money with your business is no excuse to not pay taxes on profits you make after losing money. Just because you lost money doesn't mean you dont make profits until you earned back that money. Taxes should be paid every time you make money in the country your business operates in. Simple as that. Everybody benefits off of tax money.

sevenzero··on Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI
Idk, maybe some people get crazy productivity out of LLMs. To me, going deep into the AI bubble, reading about terms I've never seen before just feels like some crypto bro bubble with people being too deep into the sauce to notice that these things are not the wonder machines they believe so hard in...
sevenzero··on Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI
Many devs now work in YOLO mode letting LLMs automate their tasks.
sevenzero··on Eight Myths on Software Engineering and GenAI
Also people tend to forget that LLMs still just work on compressed data... Where are the MAJOR breakthroughs? Where is all the "crazy" AI output going? Software seemed to degrade in quality a lot in the recent years. All "improvements" LLMs go through are simply improvements on how to burn more tokens out of my pockets given that Claude now want an actual browser extension to "visually" confirm small changes every time I use it for UI. They are still just data parrots.
sevenzero··on More German than many Germans
Willkommen in Hamburg! Was a fun read. Seems like you were extremely lucky with your company and flat mate. I know a lot of immigrants working in logistics and they'd tell a different story. It's cool to see that it can work out positively too.
sevenzero··on LLMs reward expertise
Personally I even refuse to learn what it is in the AI context. Feels like a waste of energy given new ~~~best ways to use YOUR tokens~~~ are discovered every month and things you learn now will be useless next month.

I am doing perfectly fine with the web UI version of these tools... They seem to also not make tokens dissappear as fast as using claude cli tool to automate implementations. Makes my work day more tolerable as well as I actually have something to do over waiting until some implementation can be read through...

sevenzero··on On the non-use of AI in my writing process
> Tainter suggests that societies collapse because the costs of maintaining complexity eventually outweigh the benefits. “Collapse” in this context is more like a simplification than a catastrophe. And he points out that for a lot of people, the collapse actually made life better for them, as it becomes more local and less totalitarian.

This premise sounds very intriguing. And yea I named capitalism just because I don't think we can go on like we do currently, and I'd agree that in theory it's not complex at all. In fact it makes a lot of sense (in the short term, and as long as people are willing to get exploited to be able to finance life).

Nonetheless maybe heavily regulated capitalism works, allthough, regulators are prone to corruption and act way too slow. And lobbyists preventing measurements to combat climate change as an example, I currently see as direct threat to my personal wellbeing. Hard to believe in a system that relies on exploitation, the big "if you work hard you can make it" lie and actively threatening ones or ones children's wellbeing by being ignorant to obvious and well researched topics for short term monetary enrichment...

sevenzero··on On the non-use of AI in my writing process
Ill check the book out as I am extremely interested in these kind of topics. Although I am extremely pessimistic.

You wrote "the west", what system will (in theory) work out? And how much does it value the individual?

I know capitalism for example, can in theory, never succeed as its base premise is built on endless growth (which simply wont work out with finite resources). It's a short term system that we need to improve on. All the other systems we had, like feudalism, I'd rather die than live in... Personally I'd highly prefer socialism, but that also wont work out as too many humans highly reject its concept and its also not safe from corruption.

sevenzero··on On the non-use of AI in my writing process
Extremely likely. Humanity won't work out. Time is running out and we still kill each other over money and religions.
