sethd··on Disney, Warner, Comcast, and Paramount are contemplating cuts, possible mergers
Unfortunately it is. If you want to listen to the original source audio with subtitles, you have to change these settings each time. It’s super annoying. (Unless something changed recently)
sethd··on Disney, Warner, Comcast, and Paramount are contemplating cuts, possible mergers
I think the right approach would be to label content that is not in the source language you have set as your device locale.

It’s not about filtering out the content, it’s about making it easy to tell whether or not it’s going to start playing with dubbed audio so the viewer can make a better choice.

sethd··on Disney, Warner, Comcast, and Paramount are contemplating cuts, possible mergers
Huh? What does that have to do with anything I stated?

The same would be true if I was watching Netflix in France with my device locale set to fr-FR. I’d just consider English content to be foreign language content instead.

sethd··on Disney, Warner, Comcast, and Paramount are contemplating cuts, possible mergers
That’s another thing I don’t like about Netflix: English dubs by default. It’s an example of the deceptive tactics I’m referring to in how they present foreign language content.

The default audio should be in the source language, with subtitles in your language.

Edited post to make my reason more clear
sethd··on Disney, Warner, Comcast, and Paramount are contemplating cuts, possible mergers
I’m fine with foreign language content in general, as long as it’s categorized as such. The problem is how Netflix mixes it in with everything else in a deceptive manor.
sethd··on Copyright is not a moral right, it's a monetization strategy
Technically it’s a government entitlement / subsidy, but on the plus side, at least it’s an entitlement everyone has equal access to.

> and leveraged cross-country content like no old-world provider ever has.

Mixing in a lot of foreign language content to make their library seem larger is a sad joke and one of the main reasons I no longer subscribe to Netflix.

Edit for clarity: I’m fine with foreign language content in general, as long as it’s categorized as such. The problem is how Netflix mixes it in with everything else in a deceptive manor.

I can remember when Blockbuster and video rental stores would put all this in a foreign language section, which was then further broken down by genre.

Is this satire?

Spotify may very well be bloated, but this comparison is ridiculous.

> by the time you retire you will be dementia ridden.

This makes no sense as staying cognitively active has been shown to delay dementia: https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/can-physical-or-cognitiv...

Key excerpt:

> These studies are important because they show that, despite an equivalent amount of Alzheimer's pathology (measured at autopsy in the first study and by blood in the second), individuals who were more cognitively and physically active were able to delay their clinical Alzheimer's disease diagnosis and cognitive decline. This means that even if you are likely by family history — or bad luck — to develop Alzheimer's disease at some point in your life, you can delay the onset of the disease by staying cognitively and physically active, and you can start at any age.

As for physical activity, that's a lifestyle choice and has nothing to do with working in tech. At least for me, working in tech is keeping me cognitively active. It's hard for me to even imagine a scenario where that wouldn't be true in tech.

I know professional photographers that use them for photo editing, but not as their main machine. It allows for a more casual way to work when that is desired.

It also works well for showing photos to clients. Clearly it’s valuable to at least some professionals.

> When I graze in the backyard... I don't brush off all the dirt.

Given everything we know, this doesn’t seem too reasonable to me. I’m sure those hunters and gatherers would have loved a reliable way to purge those parasites from their digestive system. Even better if they didn’t require removing them in the first place.

sethd··on Can you just move into an abandoned house?
It’s funny that you use quotes around “right” when referring to property rights, which are well established as natural rights. All while making the claim that adequate housing is some kind of fundamental human right. It might be a government benefit in some places, but it’s hardly a human right.

If housing is a right, then it would make more sense to list the things that are not human rights. What else, Diet Coke delivered daily? Maybe a new car?

The picture appears to be centered.

The house appears to be centered in the picture, more or less.

However, since there’s another house right very close to it on the right side and empty space on the left, I believe this creates a little bit of an illusion of the house not being centered.

Personally, I think it looks fine.

Side note: If I was buying a house that nice I’d want a bit more space between my neighbor. :)

I like to define a JSON schema (https://json-schema.org/) and prompt GPT-4 to output JSON based on that schema.

This lets me specify general requirements (not just JSON structure) inline with the schema and in a very detailed and structured manor.

That’s not the same at, he swore no oath to Putin.

He had no choice but to acquire a Russian citizenship since the US gov stranded him there. Unless you think rotting in a US super max prison for the rest of your life is a viable choice.

He blew the whistle and he doesn’t owe you anything and certainly doesn’t owe it to you to make a martyr of himself. Pathetic.

sethd··on What happened with ASUS routers this morning?
> Go wired if you have a choice.

For sure, that's why I mentioned that I'm still in the process of switching over to pure ethernet for backhaul.

That said, if you have enough nodes, 6GHz for backhaul works pretty nice right now. My home has concrete block exterior walls with some interior concrete and plaster walls and the nodes that use dedicated 6GHz for backhaul are doing just fine as is.

I would never consider 5GHz for backhaul, though.

sethd··on What happened with ASUS routers this morning?
You might look at some of the replies in this thread. The poster you’re replying to has an outdated view of how mesh networks work with modern hardware.

Mesh networks can use Ethernet as backhaul and they can also use dedicated radios on 6GHz for backhaul. I’m using a mix of both (still have a couple I need to run Ethernet to) and it’s fantastic.
