sesutton··on 2015 AIIDE Starcraft AI Competition – Report and Results
I think micro is one of the things bots should be very good at. There are/were several hacks for SC2 that did perfect micro for you.
sesutton··on Firefox Now Offers a More Private Browsing Experience
>I don't see this as a concern for Mozilla.

They make a lot of money from people who rely on advertising like Yahoo and Yandex.

sesutton··on WebKit removes the 350ms click delay for iOS
It's a "slow tap" that eliminates the delay. Tap and hold your finger down for a moment. The delay registered with a "slow tap" is about 10 ms for me.
sesutton··on Accelerated Mobile Pages Project
I'm really not a fan of the fact that their preferred version is <html [lightning bolt emoji]>

I can't even put it in a HN comment.

sesutton··on Who Do You Trust?
I don't think restrictions on mailing batteries is that strange. Lithium-ion batteries can fail pretty spectacularly when damaged [0].

sesutton··on DuckDuckGo on CNBC: We’ve grown 600% since NSA surveillance news broke
>It probably doesn't matter because 99.999% only want to access Netflix in another country.

If they are giving people the service they want then how is it a scam?

sesutton··on DuckDuckGo on CNBC: We’ve grown 600% since NSA surveillance news broke
If you delete the suggestion by hitting Shift-Delete while it's highlighted.
sesutton··on Why do you not make the code available under a 'source code repository'?
The LGPL says no such thing about forcing you to distribute updates but the FAQ implies it does. I wonder how this squares with the part of the GPL that says:

>If the Program as you received it, or any part of it, contains a notice stating that it is governed by this License along with a term that is a further restriction, you may remove that term.

sesutton··on Getting Fucked by Stripe
If that car was specifically design to commit bank robberies, I'm willing to bet there would be a prosecution.
sesutton··on How necessary are var, let, and const?
>The temptation to introduce yet another strict mode(to forbid var,and a few other constructs) is strong on this one.

There is a proposal for that, coincidentally called "strong mode".

sesutton··on ES6 in Depth: Destructuring
You could just write:

         let [tenth_item] = somearray.slice(9)
sesutton··on ES6 in Depth: Destructuring
Both async/await and generators are on the roadmap[0] for the next version.

sesutton··on Google Design
The whole video felt like something Apple would put out.
sesutton··on Show HN: Typedetail.com – featuring Apple's new typeface San Francisco
Maybe I'm just not very observant and/or a philistine but I can't be the only one that can't tell the difference between these fonts without looking very hard. I doubt I would be able to tell at all if you swapped any of those fonts.
sesutton··on Amazing Source Code Related Easter Egg in Ex Machina
I was just impressed that it was actually a programming language and looked like valid Python.
sesutton··on The media’s reaction to Seymour Hersh’s bin Laden scoop
>First of all, denigrating a legendary reporter who has broken more major stories than almost anyone alive as a “conspiracy theorist” because his story contained a few details a little too implausible for some people’s taste is beyond insulting.

Besides this being a blatant appeal to authority can you blame people for thinking he is drifting into conspiracy theorist territory when he has claimed that US Special Forces have been infiltrated by Opus Dei and the Knights of Malta?

sesutton··on IRS Seized $107,000 from Him. He’s Fighting to Get It Back
Can he sue his bank for advising his niece to commit a crime?
sesutton··on BitTorrent Sync vs. Dropbox
One downside of BTS is that for most consumer internet connections download is much faster than upload. Once you get your file to dropbox you can download it on all your other devices at your much faster download rate.
sesutton··on The View from the Front Seat of the Google Self-Driving Car
I don't think it's so different than people being killed by a mechanical failure in a plane. Sure you can put the failure back on the mechanic or engineer who designed the plane but you can do that with software too.
sesutton··on Verizon to Buy AOL for $4.4B
According to those numbers each WhatsApp user was only worth $4.66 to Facebook. That means WhatsApp needs to add 3.3 billion users to be worth the extra $15 billion.
sesutton··on Microsoft to stop producing Windows versions
>- of course, you can totally ignore the "modern Windows" side of the coin for now, except that's where Windows is headed

It seems to me that they are backing off metro/"modern Windows" more and more. 8.1 made boot to Desktop the default, they are bringing back the start menu in 10 and Metro apps will run in windows in 10.

sesutton··on The programming talent myth
>In my experience people really are either amazing or terrible and those that are amazing are super passionate about programming, think about it and study it all the time...

I enjoy programming but I don't spend every waking second thinking about it. If that makes me a terrible programmer then thats fine with me. I'd rather be happy than be killing myself working 16 hours a day like some people like to glorify.

sesutton··on Websites Prep for Google’s ‘Mobilegeddon’
I couldn't stand reading HN comments without collapsible comments. Trying to scroll past a top level comment chain that I didn't find interesting was very tedious.
sesutton··on Space X CR6 First stage landing
The only thing I could find describes it as a "chase plane". I know one time they used Musk's private jet but I think that was an emergency replacement.
sesutton··on Massive, Illicit Bust of Edward Snowden Stuck to a War Monument in Brooklyn
Voting systems like HN inevitably lead to an echo chamber when used to signal agreement or disagreement. HN already largely is one, but its a shame to see that this is officially endorsed.
sesutton··on Scientists Seek Ban on Method of Editing the Human Genome
The headline is misleading (NYTimes fault not OP's) the scientists are asking their fellow scientists not to use certain techniques on humans until the implications are more fully understood. Unfortunately that isn't quite as sensational of a headline.
sesutton··on Turning Japanese: Coping with stasis
The whole thing mostly boils down to: I've been to the nice parts of Tokyo and its awesome.
sesutton··on Elon Musk: human drivers are 'too dangerous'
I don't think we'll go straight from total human control to total automation directly. I imagine that the first versions of automated cars will require some supervision and only work in certain conditions. This will likely require some sort of system to detect the driver is paying attention, like steering wheel sensors, to prevent people from just going to sleep.
sesutton··on Microsoft tackles China piracy with free upgrade to Windows 10
There are still OEMs who will have to pay for it. I think the number of people who actually upgrade their version of Windows rather than just buying a new device is relatively small.
sesutton··on The guy making it easy to 3D print yourself a real gun
>HN is inundated with people living in CA, NY, the UK - All places where the right to own and bear firearms is non-existent or substantially impeded.

Are you implying that most people here are in favor of gun control? Because the voting and comments in this thread disagree with that premise. Everyone expressing such a view has been downvoted.
