serpix··on Thinking of yourself as an insomniac may be a part of the problem
After two burnouts nowadays if insomnia sets in I just turn the alarm off, accept that it is one of those nights and relax. If that won't work due to racy thoughts I just get up and do something. The next day is immediately cleared from appointments, duties, plans and exercise. Good sleep is priority 1 over work, exercise and even food. I'd rather be unemployed than being a walking zombie ever again.
serpix··on JavaScript Pattern Matching Proposal
some-> (threading macro) and the fact that you can put an s-expression _anywhere_, these two language fundamental features alone put lisps way above c-style languages. You can laugh and continue sipping your espresso while reading the JS community bicker about syntax changes and what you are allowed to type.
serpix··on Vipassana for Hackers [pdf]
for a LISP using meditation practicing hacker reading this is incredible, the same insights written down by someone else.

> You do not feel physical sensation, consciously or subconsciously, without an accompanying thought or emotion. this is true. When really connected with your body, mind and emotion you see these are interlinked. The body follows thought and emotion, suppressed emotions are kept in the body. Your body feels emotion before you consciously recognize it.

serpix··on Tesla issues strongest statement yet blaming driver for deadly crash
On top of all that is going on in traffic you would add interpreting one more abstracted symbol to your cognitive load? The situation can change in milliseconds during driving, you can never ever be entirely sure nothing unexpected could happen.

Personally having tried Tesla AP1 iit was painfully clear I can never fully trust any assisted driving aid, they can fail at any point and I need to be ready to take over immediately. Particularly having to wrestle the steering wheel from AP1 as it slightly resists is reason enough to stop using it.

serpix··on Project from Hell (2008)
In Finland this is the only way to get anybody even slightly competent to get something done.
serpix··on The Problem with Mindfulness
it is the knowing and experience of no self / anatta. You've been told this and nothing compares to experiencing it as a certainty and truth. That the you you thought you were is not real and never was. Suddenly there is an existential crisis. If I am not real then what is the point? Serious anxiety and horror from this but it passes as a new reality asserts itself. The ego still exists but you're no longer trapped all in there and can see it separate from that which is aware.
serpix··on Organizational Skills Beat Algorithmic Wizardry (2015)
- what do you like doing?

- how are you as a person, a coworker

- are you able to ask for help?

- can you hold a conversation?

- how do you learn?

- describe a failure in your career and how it went from there

all this is for the interviewer and the interviewee to get to know each other each other and see if the candidate is a good fit for the company culture and values. If the recruitment lets in a narcissist or toxic person it will poison the well.

serpix··on From Rails to Clojure, Then to Java, Then Back to Rails
re-frame is the uncrowned king of web dev at the moment, there is nothing like it out there
serpix··on Ask HN: Quit job to avoid burnout?
as a recent burnout recoveree, it is possible at this point you have already lost a significant portion of your reserves and capacity to recover. You need to make immediate changes which allow you to recover energy. Burnout recovery is painful and you do not come out the same person.

If you are having a hard time sleeping or have unexplainable pains and aches this is your wake up call to act, your body WILL stop you at some point.

serpix··on Portacle – A Portable Common Lisp Development Environment
How is Common Lisp for SPA development? I tried to look for anything on either Racket or CL side and pretty much a dead wasteland on that front.

I've used re-frame ClojureScript for a few years now but would like to dip my toes in CL, just can't seem to get a head start. Maybe trying CL on the backend first, but even there Clojure dominates..

serpix··on Expo Template for ClojureScript and React Native
As someone who used re-natal previously I'm looking forward to trying this out!
serpix··on The antidepressant effect of sleep deprivation
exactly the same. Just one nights poor sleep and the overcompensation of the mind makes life a living hell. Anxiety, depression and feeling like in a haze is absolute torture.
serpix··on Using Prettier to format your JavaScript code
After three weeks of writing Javascript I don't understand how people bare with writing so damn much of it. I need to rest my hands from all the damn typing and reorganizing parentheses and braces, moving functions and typing return all the damn time.
serpix··on Using Prettier to format your JavaScript code
And full of missing return statements and corner cases. if it only were possible to put an expression anywhere you want :(
serpix··on Clojure Don’ts: Lazy Effects (2015)
always mapv when doing I/O on the backend and always extra vec when returning sequences in the frontend
serpix··on Lost Art of Bending Over: How Other Cultures Spare Their Spines
I've had fallen arches since a kid and was told I can never be a runner and I'll have a tough time with my feet.

Nowadays I run mountain ultra marathons and my feet are fine, my flat arches give me no trouble at all.

Fallen arches are not a problem.

serpix··on Ask HN: Can't code for hours since it became a job
I've come to the realization the key difference is working code needs to be an order of magnitude more robust than hobby projects. There is a major difference in energy needed to get there. Spending this energy costs and there comes a point where programming becomes taxing instead of recharging.

Take care of your recovery, have outside interests to programming and realize as you age your ability to recover slows down even more, but your abilities also change. Wisdom accumulated along the way make you able to use your energy wisely.

serpix··on Elevated Use of Absolutist Words Is a Marker of Anxiety, Depression [pdf]
say anything to another person starting with "you .... " will immediately bring up defenses and come off as argumentative and passive aggressive and all kinds of boundary violations going on there. There is no harm in saying what you feel: "I feel bad about the way we talked last time"

Unless I read this the wrong way, are you being addressed like this by someone?

serpix··on Content-aware image resize library
I'm already quite interested in resizing wide images to square images for Convolutional Neural Networks training
serpix··on Reality has a surprising amount of detail (2017)
This here is why estimation of tasks (in software) is IMHO futile hand waving. There is always unknown unknowns, snags and hangups which may surprise everyone.

Everybody who actually creates or makes something can agree that that stuff is hard, really hard but oh so rewarding!

serpix··on Time Is the Ultimate Success, Not Money
Chemical imbalance theory still disproven
serpix··on Ford to boost investment in electric cars by 2022
Chevrolet Volt since 2009 is like this.
serpix··on Ask HN: What influenced your personal growth the most?
Divorce, second breakup from a BPD person, meditation, tantra, yoga and ultra running. There are moments in ultra running and tantra that transcend everything, a glimpse of enlightenment and the simplicity of life that make you get through anything life throws at you.
serpix··on Turning web design mockups into code with Deep Learning
maintainability is irrelevant if the whole site can be regenerated in seconds with the new changes required.

I'm okay with this though. Creating websites is tedious and is most analogous to cranking a handle as it is a learnable skill. After a while it is clear it is just banging characters and seeing what changed on the screen this time.

Bear in mind I'm only talking about implementing the layout, colors, texts and responsiveness. Any dynamic functionality such as forms, buttons, dialogs, integrations and talking to servers is still potentially very complex and difficult taking.

serpix··on Why Am I So Lazy?
Have you ever wondered why in our society when people stop taking their medications a significant portion of the population will go mad?

The crux of the problem here is trying to conform to some ideal of what a good person is and using drugs to get there. Then you will be happy and all is good in life. Until something else comes along and back to square one again.

serpix··on Productivity in 2017: analyzing 225 million hours of work time
They might have been burned out. At the stage before your body prevents you from getting physically to work your work output takes a very serious nose dive.
serpix··on High Sierra macOS freezing and stops
The new rMBP is about five hours if you don't touch it at all. under 4 hours if used for working. It is a step down from my previous 2012 model which is a damn shame.

serpix··on Her six-hour commute each day seems crazy, but her affordable rent is not
The kids will only learn that it's okay to sacrifice yourself as well. They will learn to do the same and the cycle continues.

If she really wants her kids to have a better life she should start from herself.

serpix··on Much of the research around meditation and mindfulness has serious flaws
Thank you for educating the discussion on what meditation is and isn't. Western culture/medicine seems to have fixated on meditation being only mindfulness which is just one facet of the journey inward.
