sequence7··on Does Facebook pay Apple 30% of revenue derived from ads made within its iOS app?
‘If Apple has a rule that it can take 30% of every sale made via an app from the App Store, this should be applied to every sale.’

So should Amazon pay 30% to Apple on every sale made via their iOS app? I assume you mean every digital sale.

sequence7··on Bill Gates advocates for stopping end-to-end encryption
I had a look at that article but I couldn't find where in that article he is "shilling against crypto for 'the children'". Can you share a quote?
sequence7··on What is a Product Roadmap?
Return on invested capital (ROIC) is a calculation used to assess a company's efficiency at allocating the capital under its control to profitable investments.
sequence7··on Amazon’s UK FBA operations will be split from the EU
Switzerland is in the single market. The UK loses access to the single market on January the 1st so that comparison doesn't stand up.
sequence7··on The Trick
Everyone seems to come out pretty badly from this story.

The client clearly isn't good at working with people.

As noted by controlledchaos the author isn't good at working with clients, communicating complexity is hard to do but it's essential to work through this with a client. It can be very frustrating and takes a lot of time but just stating that you're an expert is never going to win anyone over. You have to demonstrate that fact to them and understand their goals and motivations.

The author's boss sucks, he basically threw the author to the wolves and only stepped in at the last minute by which time it was too late.

The senior developer's advice to not care is toxic.

sequence7··on Show HN: CloudSkew – Draw AWS, Azure, GCP, K8s architecture diagrams
This is super nice, congratulations on building and releasing it. It's great that you've got so many decent icons but I find having to go into my profile to choose icon sets a bit unintuitive, I only found that option by blind luck. Also please implement a collapse all for the icon groups.

Then you should look at either Bitrise [0] who have a CI/CD system tailored to solving that exact problem or GitHub Actions [1] that provides macOS build machines.

sequence7··on Microsoft Defender SmartScreen is hurting independent developers
This is really hurting Microsoft's ecosystem, I'm trying to add the latest version of QuickLook [0] to the winget package manager at the moment but because the msi installer isn't signed my pull request is doomed to failure[1].

If Microsoft want Windows to be an awesome developer platform this kind of friction with the tooling helps no-one.

sequence7··on Show HN: A Firefox add-on to strip Google search results of 'blacklisted' URLs
OK, I suppose I could be slightly less lazy and read the source, which shows that you're iterating through the blacklist then iterating through the results page and removing elements that match. There are some default offenders blacklisted automatically by the look of it, nice and simple.

  var blacklist = new RegExp('https?:\/\/.*\.(geeksforgeeks|tutorialspoint).*\.*');

  function clearURLs(urls) {
      var i, j, arr, res, url;
      arr = [];
      res = document.querySelectorAll('div.rc');

      for (i = 0; i < res.length; i++) {
          for (j = 0; j < urls.blacklistURLs.length; j++) {
              if (res[i].firstChild.firstChild.getAttribute('href').indexOf(urls.blacklistURLs[j]) !== -1) {
                  arr.push(i);
              }
          }
      }
      arr = [...new Set(arr)];

      for (i = 0; i < arr.length; i++) {
          url = res[arr[i]].firstChild.firstChild.getAttribute('href');
          url = 'Wiper blacklisted URL: <a href="' + url + '">' + url + '</a>';
          res[arr[i]].parentElement.innerHTML = url;
      }
  }

  browser.storage.local.get('blacklistURLs').then(clearURLs);
sequence7··on Show HN: A Firefox add-on to strip Google search results of 'blacklisted' URLs
Firstly, thank you for building this I have exactly the same itch and I'm so glad someone provided a way to scratch it.

> The plugin maintains a persistent and customizable list of URLs (keywords) that are used as a 'blacklist' for stripping results.

Could you explain a little more about how the stripping of the 'blacklist' works.

sequence7··on Initial Impressions of WSL 2
Well I guess the main two would be:

1. You like windows

2. You want to use software or hardware that works best with windows

Personally I like windows and I want to run Lightroom and various other software that doesn't work on linux. I also want to have a full *nix OS available and windows with wsl gives me exactly that.

sequence7··on Ask HN: What is your blog and why should I read it?
So where can I find your blog? https://admcpr.com

why is it awesome? Honestly, it's really not.

And why should I (and everyone else) read it? You almost certainly shouldn't, it exclusively consists of posts that are a way for me to learn something, remember something or clarify something.

sequence7··on Ask HN: What's the best corporate password manager?
Lastpass has a feature called auto password change [0] that allows you to update a password directly from inside lastpass at the click of the button. It doesn't work for all sites but it's a pretty nice feature.

sequence7··on Google Chrome's fear of Microsoft Edge is revealing its bad side
If Google is only trying to stop the evil Microsoft empire why are they also trying to gently smother Firefox? It seems clear that Google wants to own the platform, which is perfectly understandable but doesn't fit in with the narrative of Google fighting to maintain the open standards of the Web.

sequence7··on Let's Reverse Engineer Discord
For convenience:

> SFU stands for Selective Forwarding Unit.

> At times, the term is used to describe a type of video routing device, while at other times it will be used to indicate the support of routing technology and not a specific device.

> An SFU is capable of receiving multiple media streams and then decide which of these media streams should be sent to which participants.

sequence7··on Microsoft announces new Surface Duo phone
Ah yes I missed the bit where you mentioned the Android subsystem.
sequence7··on Microsoft announces new Surface Duo phone
I'm sure it could run 10 X easily enough, the problem is the same problem that killed the Windows Phone ecosystem. No one's developing mobile/touch apps for anything other than Android and iOS. Windows has been fully touch enabled for years now but still there are almost no apps that take advantage of that, there isn't even a decent kindle app in the microsoft store. I wish this wasn't true but the truth is mobile belongs to Apple and Google and tablets belong to Apple.

Yep, you can just run the following command in PowerShell to enable ssh.

Add-WindowsCapability -Online -Name OpenSSH.Client~~~~0.0.1.0

You can check if ssh is enabled with this command.

Get-WindowsCapability -Online | ? Name -like 'OpenSSH*'

sequence7··on Ask HN: Is there a project based book or course on Go for writing web APIs?
I'm working through Let's Go! by Alex Edwards right now, it's not specifically focussed on APIs but the book guides you through building a web application in Go. My experience so far has been very positive.

sequence7··on Twilio Super SIM
> But, if I were working for a haulage company and was interested in tracking, say, truck location, speed etc across the whole of Europe I could see this being a great way to do it.

If you wanted to do that in the EU you just need a sim card with data from any EU country. EU rules on roaming mean that your sim will work across the EU just as it does from its home country. I agree this would be a great use case if you're not only tracking in the EU though.
