septerr··on Ask HN: What book changed your life?
Same. And I recommend the audio book over the print. The format of presentation in the audio book and hearing Eckhart himself talk makes a big difference.
septerr··on Ask HN: What is the software architecture at your company?
Curious what went wrong.

The few microservices we've built so far have been good at taking some load off of the monolith and its database, as well as at making sure that if the micro service goes down, only a small part of the customer facing app will be affected. The monolith and majority of the app would continue to function.

septerr··on Programmers are confessing their sins to protest a broken job interview process
It was funny how this was happening on Twitter around the same time when Celestine Omin was asked to balance a Binary Tree at JFK airport.
septerr··on Ask HN: Is your significant other supportive of your entrepreneurial tendencies?
Not wrecking bank account shouldn't be the only concern. Wrecking relationships by being absent should also be of concern.
septerr··on Ask HN: What is your full stack web development?
The company is in the process of moving to git now. Subversion met their requirement fine and so for the longest time they stuck with that.
septerr··on Ask HN: What is your full stack web development?
Java, Tomcat, Maven, Spring (limited use), JSP, JavaScript, CSS, HTML, IntelliJ IDE, Jira (issue tracking), Bamboo (continuous integration), subversion.
septerr··on Ask HN: Are you a programmer with Parkinson's?
Thank you for sharing your experience. It is encouraging to read about others in our field coping, and coping well with Parkinson's. Moving to more managerial type positions does seem like a good idea.
septerr··on Ask HN: Are you a programmer with Parkinson's?
Thank you! Thank you for linking the study.
septerr··on Ask HN: Are you a programmer with Parkinson's?
Thank you, your experience is very encouraging.
septerr··on Free resources made by designers at Facebook
You are getting psds of iphone's own user interface...so that you can then put the mock up of your application inside it for say client presentation or to see how your app's design looks on the iPhone or to see if your app's design meshes well with iphone's aesthetics.
septerr··on New Initiatives for Lyft Drivers
what if Uber/Lyft etc let you lend your car to drivers? So instead of sitting in the parking lot, an uber driver could be driving it. Uber/Lyft could background check the drivers. I wonder if it will be worthwhile for them to provide insurance against theft. The driver would also need to be added to your personal insurance I guess....the insurance companies might eventually come up with plans specific for this type of scenarios.
septerr··on The Most Misread Poem in America
The backstory clears things up greatly. Thank you for posting this!
septerr··on Ask HN: Do you take anti-depressants?
Thank you for this.
septerr··on Ask HN: What Is HN Learning?
Nah, it means 'nothing'. :-( But I am looking to learn React + Flux. I am a frontend noob, mostly because the spider web of JS and CSS code (plus the tens of JS frameworks to choose from) ultimately drives me nuts. But, React and Flux seem to be less spider-web-y and appeal to a backend developer like me.
septerr··on Show HN: Cookoo – Whistle Counter for Pressure Cookers
Yes, the whistle counting thing is typical in usage of pressure cookers in Indian cooking (I am an Indian).
septerr··on The Work We Do While We Sleep
Tldr:

When we sleep, our brains process the events of the day and pick out things to stow away in our long term memory.

Maybe as a side-effect of this processing, they also aid problem solving - after a good night's sleep, you are able to find solutions to the previous day's problems faster (than you would, if you hadn't had the sleep).

As we sleep, our brains clear away toxins that accumulate during our awake time. These toxins may be culprits behind neuro degenerative diseases.

There seems to be a correlation between sleep deprivation and cardiovascular diseases.

septerr··on Latest prototype self-driving vehicles cruising around Mountain View
It is interesting that most of the accidents were other vehicles rear ending (or close to rear ending) their car.
septerr··on Can Simplicity Scale? (2012)
I don't worry about the number of lines of code. I do worry about lack of clarity, readability, maintainability, clear flows of events. Unfortunately, hacked together fragile code that produces desired effect (as the article mentions) has been the norm at every place I have worked at. A serious source of job dissatisfaction.
septerr··on How the Brain Uses Glucose to Fuel Self-Control
"Moreover, during a tough self-control task, circulating glucose levels plummet, consumed by hardworking frontal neurons. And, remarkably, self-control improves if subjects sip sugary drinks during the task (with control subjects consuming sugar-free drinks)."

Then is controlling urge to sip sugary drinks a doomed enterprise?

septerr··on Stop writing stateful HTML
But he does talk about apps with authentication, rating systems, shopping carts etc. These in my opinion represent a complex app.
septerr··on Ask HN: Which Android/iOS apps do you use every day?
iOS: Mailbox (apart from apple's apps: Safari, Reminder, Clock for alarms).
septerr··on Detailed report shows how U.S. Internet access monopolies punish rivals
I really appreciate the clarity with which this article described the issue. I had read an article by someone from Netflix few months (I think) ago about this and did not get the clear understanding this article provided.
septerr··on What If Age Is Nothing but a Mind-Set?
I think it will be close to impossible to make the participants feel like it is 2003 by doing things like placing turn-of-the century magazines around etc. It sounds silly. It almost seems to be mocking their intelligence (I know that's not what they are doing). IMO, they should stick to just telling these participants to try and put themselves in the mindset they were in before they ever faced cancer.
septerr··on Soda May Age You as Much as Smoking
I have the same thoughts. I know folks that are suffering from diabetes, and they drink soda every time I eat with them. And that boggles my mind. It's like they can't bear the taste (or lack thereof) of water. Or they are addicted to soda.

After moving to the U.S, I had more soda than ever before in my life, and that actually made me not like them anymore. Can't drink more than couple sips.

septerr··on How Exercise May Protect Against Depression
Same.
septerr··on Reddit
The giving back to community approach would, in my opinion, be more deserved by a community like StackOverflow. I always feel grateful to and am amazed by the SO community.
septerr··on Ask HN: What is HN reading?
Worlds Together Worlds Apart (http://amzn.to/1rzYmUg)
septerr··on Ask HN: What would you build if you would be a multi-billionare?
Invest in think tank that will work on figuring out a model of governance/society that will ensure no one goes hungry, no one lacks healthcare, everyone has access to education/learning material in their chosen field, there is little or no income inequality - maybe a society that does away with money.
septerr··on Museum of Endangered Sounds
Nice. Some of the sounds didn't seem to work (like the typewriter).

I have a similar idea jotted down on my things-to-make list :) My idea is to create a library of sounds that are part of our daily life today, not necessarily things that have disappeared or are rapidly disappearing. Like a shutterstock of sounds :)

septerr··on Show HN: Bookwork.in, a place for old fashioned book lovers
Received a 500 error when searching for a book.

Is this targeted at people in India? Wondering because of the .in domain. It is a really good idea for a place like India where the public library system is not that great. I grew up there and the way I was able to read books mostly was by borrowing from friends whose parents or grandparents had built up a collection.
