sep_field··on The Victims of the Eviction Moratorium
All the land in the Bay Area was stolen from indigenous peoples as part of a pogrom of genocide. Many other areas in the United States have a similar issue. Until reparations are paid to the people who were here first, I have zero sympathy for so called "land owners".
sep_field··on Coca Cola Confirms Training Employees ‘Try to Be Less White’
The issue is that there is a power imbalance: since, in the United States we are living in a white supremacist society, ethnic solidarity among whites exacerbates the power imbalance, whereas ethnic solidarity among non-whites helps correct the power imbalance.

Eventually we could get to a world where no ethnic solidarity exists at any level but until power imbalances are corrected, not speaking and acting against white supremacy is just asking for the status quo to be upheld.

sep_field··on Taking a Stand in the War on General-Purpose Computing
All fines should be scaled to the net worth of the offender. It is not fair that a fine that would ruin the poor is treated by the rich as a game.
sep_field··on Order Amid Chaos: A poet-scientist considers the imponderables of existence
birth families are a terrible way to form communities. I despise my birth family and have nothing in common with them other than genetics. My real family is my friends.

Yeah I will. I mean, I like him I just didn't really associate him with humor in particular. Will be interesting to see what he has to offer.

I don't watch tv. I'll check out the novels you've pointed me to, thanks.
sep_field··on Scientists break through the wall of sleep to the untapped world of dreams
I always read the comments here before the article. Usually the comments tell me everything I need to know and are more interesting. Most of the time I never end up clicking on the actual article because I've gotten enough info from the comments.
sep_field··on Falling sperm counts, declining egg quality, and endocrine disruptors
I agree with you, though, there is no reason we need to eat meat at all. The cost to the planet is way too high. Vegetarian diets are far healthier for us and our Earth.
sep_field··on I heat my home by mining crypto currencies
Only once it gets publicized. You have a window to sell and make an enormous profit before people notice and then the entire bit-conomy gets wrecked. I hope this happens as it is a much better outcome to this mess we've created than wrecking the biosphere.

Which ISO-8601 format though? There are a variety to choose from. You want the date-only format? or the date+time format? you want the T separator or space? Is time zone represented?

All these are allowed according to the ISO standard.

What has Gaiman wrote that is funny? I've read a few of his things but all serious-business graphic novels.

sep_field··on India's artisanal fountain pens are making their mark
Looks like they've fixed that -- my pen has a "03" marked on the top of the cap and the nib itself also has 03 engraved on it.
sep_field··on India's artisanal fountain pens are making their mark
For anyone interested in fountain pens but unwilling to plop down a huge amount of money, these Japanese "Preppy" pens by Platinum are pretty fun to play with. It's my first fountain pen so I can't say whether its as smooth writing as more expensive ones but for $6 I think its a great way to get started. They come in lots of colors, this is the one I got:

this sounds cool! what are you using for the automatic timekeeping?
sep_field··on Robert’s Rules Suck: Why We Can’t Make Change Until We Change the System
Yeah, I thought the promotion of Agile was pretty lame in this context. But overall still thought the article was thought provoking and had some good points that would make an interesting discussion here.
sep_field··on Whistleblowers: Software keeping inmates in Arizona prisons beyond release dates
Don't let the people in charge skip out on accountability. If their excuse is "the computer", well, they are after all the ones that put the computer system in place and hold responsibility for its outcomes. Take action against them personally (pay cuts, firings) and they or their successors will for sure be motivated to ensure the computer works properly going forward.
sep_field··on We haven’t seen a quarter of known bee species since the 1990s
The Earth does not belong to us, rather we belong to the Earth. The Earth is more important than we are, we should put the Earth's needs ahead of our own needs. We must stand up for the rights of the Earth, or else human rights will be impossible to maintain.

yes, that is awesome! thank you!
sep_field··on Cross-Database Queries in SQLite
Appending lines of json or csv data to a file is very, very fast. Also takes up much less space because sqlite can't keep pages completely full. Also sqlite becomes quite slow on large datasets.

For some applications these properties make sense. I have hundreds of gigabytes of data that is only ever processed sequentially in a pipeline, I don't need random access -- for this use json/csv are fantastic.

sep_field··on Uighurs: 'Credible case' China carrying out genocide

I deleted it because it was overly emotive and didn't constructively add to the conversation. It being deleted, you were welcome to have ignored it.

Since you didn't, however, you should know that your advice is pointless. Everything you've achieved will be lost. All your loved ones will die, along with your enemies. All the same is true for me.

It's the kind of typo a spellcheker would overlook. Maybe the article could have used more proofreading but so what? Somtimes content is more important than presentation.

sep_field··on Clearing price for supplying power to Texas grid –$31.65
Charge rich people more than poor people. Cut them off sooner. They have bigger houses that use more energy and they have more blankets and supplies. Poor people with fewer options deserve the power more.
