senjin··on A Brief History of Ralph
The creator of claude code said you can just get ralph to run /clear. I think it's hilarious nobody (myself included!) thought of that or tried it and just assumed it couldn't run slash commands like that.

senjin··on The history of Casio watches
I can't believe they left out my favorite Casio, the AE1200WHD-1A aka the Casio Royale!
senjin··on I built the same app 10 times: Evaluating frameworks for mobile performance
I wish he would have combined Astro with solid instead of HTMX for a more direct comparison
senjin··on I drank every cocktail
I agree! It's really nice to have a goal like this that could take you years to accomplish because you have no deadline. I did the same thing with a list of some of the best scifi [1] over the course of 15 years or so. I would get into a series and read the whole thing before moving on or really get into an author for a while. Some books are the 2nd, 3rd or 5th book in a series (looking at you Murderbot...) so you kind of have to read the preceding books. You could read the whole list in a couple years but it was really nice to work through it really slowly.

Anyway, I think this list of cocktails will be my next long term goal

senjin··on Puerto Rico's Solar Microgrids Beat Blackout
With solar panels being so much cheaper than 10-15 years ago, it seems like installation costs are the biggest hurdle to wider adoption. Do you see anything reducing those costs in the future?

Maybe we need a push to make standing seam metal roofs more mainstream and people can install their own without having to drill into their roof

senjin··on Anker is recalling over 1.1M power banks due to fire and burn risks
When I put in the serial number it said my batch was safe. I wonder what percent of batches don't actually apply to the recall
senjin··on Take the pedals off the bike
I think this is exactly what the article is getting at. Maybe you’re right but maybe it’s at least a step in the right direction just like learning to ride without pedals didn’t ingrain bad habits.
senjin··on Title drops in movies
First thing I thought of. “Man, I’m just so tired of these Star Wars.”
senjin··on Which word begins with "y" and looks like an axe in this picture? (2017)
Ultimate nerd snipe
senjin··on Why I Like Obsidian
This is basically what I tried to do using the spaced repetition plugin for Obsidian but it's just not very good yet. I just checked and the author asked for a co-maintainer yesterday. I really hope they can find someone to put a bit of time in because it's a great idea and a great foundation.

senjin··on Stirling-PDF: local web application to perform various operations on PDFs
I recently found out Mac's built in Preview app can do this. Go to export then change the Quartz Filter to "Reduce File Size"
senjin··on Elixir for Ruby developers: the three most important differences
`dbg` is relatively new but [IEx.pry](https://hexdocs.pm/iex/IEx.Pry.html) has been around for a long itme
senjin··on Vimium – A browser extension that provides Vim-style keyboard controls
Using `T` to search through open tabs is the best
senjin··on Hard truths I learned when I got laid off from my SWE job
Thank you for writing this. I have the sinking feeling I will be laid off within the next 6 months and I am already starting to get worried about the job search ahead. This is great preemptive information, now I need the "so you're about to be laid off..." post for someone who hasn't had to interview for a job in 15 years.
senjin··on Pipe Viewer
This would be a genius addition
senjin··on Show HN: America – Road Trip Simulator
This is my new favorite idle game
senjin··on Overthinking (2021)
Not wabi-sabi specifically but the book "How to be an imperfectionist" was spot on and really helpful for me
senjin··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
I know exactly why I do it and it feels impossible to stop. I scroll endlessly to avoid the pain of everything else in life. Doing work, doing chores, doing hobbies, talking to anyone, making decisions even about projects I'm excited to work on, it all causes a small hit of emotional pain. I don't really know where this pain comes from either. Maybe some childhood trauma that I can't even remember? I don't know.

The 2nd part that cements this into what feels like an unbreakable habit is that I feel like I'm constantly learning. It's partly true, I'm constantly learning about things that have even benefited me and my team at work, but in general it's low quality garbage I'm learning about or just the surface of a good/useful topic.

Like the author I have recognized this and done research on it and have no idea how to fix it. I remember finding the word akrasia [1] years ago that has stuck with me since but no help actually getting past it.

senjin··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
I use zsh so this is also going in my toolbox. I think I've reached for !:* in the past and didn't know it so this is useful
senjin··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
I also use cat `which !!` every once in a while
senjin··on Ask HN: Teach me something new
I use !$ multiple times every day but you just helped me make the connection to try !^ for the first argument and I think I'm going to start using that as well. Thanks!
senjin··on Lets talk about blockchains
There's also a standard for this called DIDs (decentralized identifiers) created by the W3C https://www.w3.org/TR/did-core/

There is a huge community around "self sovereign identity" with a conference currently happening right now https://internetidentityworkshop.com/

senjin··on Why companies move off Heroku (besides the cost)
Throwing this out there since it hasn't been mentioned yet but AWS's copilot tool (https://aws.github.io/copilot-cli/) has been really nice for setting up an ECS cluster with a good build pipeline that we use in almost the same way as we use Heroku. It's definitely more mental overhead than Heroku but it offers more flexibility and tying directly to your AWS account. After setup it has been maintenance free for over a year but debugging parts of the build pipeline were painful at first. It recently started supporting AppRunner now that AppRunner can access VPCs so I'm looking forward to trying that at some point too.
senjin··on Show HN: Lists.sh – A Microblog for Lists
This a cool use of charm.sh I wrote up some thoughts in a list: https://lists.sh/luke/thoughts
senjin··on Software Mise En Place
There's a book by Dan Charnas called "Work Clean: The life-changing power of mise-en-place to organize your life, work, and mind" that does a great job of explaining the system of mise en place beyond just setup and precutting vegetables. My favorite takeaway that has actually helped my organization in practice has been to leave a project/code base in a clean state after working on it. Sounds obvious but writing checklists for tests, documentation, setup for the next person, etc. has been really helpful.

senjin··on We lost 54k GitHub stars
Thank you for this explanation. I didn't know profile READMEs were a thing and have to be named the same as the user account. I can see how this could be confusing when the functionality is different between users and orgs.
senjin··on Database-less torrent website
Makes me wonder if you could host a pouchdb in ipfs
senjin··on Tools for Thinking
I think they're talking about roam research
senjin··on Beyond All Reason: Open-source RTS reimagining Total Annihilation
I was a kickstarter backer too! I didn't play much multiplayer outside of my friend group but it was a lot of fun.

I didn't know about the other kickstarter game, do you mean the titans expansion?

senjin··on Progress Quest
I don't know if it's still there after all the drama but #idlerpg on freenode was pretty cool
