senectus1··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
holy shit, yeah. you dont see a problem with earning "over $5 per kWh" ?!?!
senectus1··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
for single individuals to earn as much as (i assume US$) 150 a day means that the grid is horrendously unbalanced.

hell if I emptied my 30kw into the grid in my state/country at the most expensive time I'd earn AU$21.00

to earn US$150 means either HUGE battery capacity (and transmission capacity) or utterly rediculous power pricing... both mean really lousy power supply and grid design. I'm all for indipendance but the reality is we live in communities and count on the collective to rise us all up together.

that sort of profit is a clear warning sign of a broken community.

senectus1··on Show HN: NSL – WSL for Linux
would really like a NixOS for this. would be interesting to play with and figure out.
senectus1··on Vermont replacing power plants with home batteries
there is something really wrong with the economics of this.

it shouldnt be celebrated.

senectus1··on OpenAI Says It Will Not Release Newest A.I. Model Over Safety Concerns
OPENAI / JOBS

Killswitch Engineer

San Francisco, California, United States

300,000-500,000 per year

About the Role

Listen, we just need someone to stand by the servers all day and unplug them if this thing turns on us. You'll receive extensive training on "the code word" which we will shout if GPT goes off the deep end and starts overthrowing countries.

We expect you to:

• Be patient.

• Know how to unplug things. Bonus points if you can throw a bucket of water on the servers, too. Just in case.

• Be excited about OpenAI's approach to research

senectus1··on Who should be held accountable when an AI Agent (accidentally) acts maliciously?
this is 100% an already solved problem.

the idiocy here is the stupid psudo "AGI" marketing around the services.

its really simple. Whoever run the service to do the task requested is responsible. If OpenAI sent an agent out to train their AI then the directors are to be held responsible, if a user of the service used the service and it inadvertently "hacked" someone then both are held responsible.

throwing AI into the mix changes nothing about how the law is applied. its a tool, like a car or a gun. The user of the tool is responsible for how its used, the manufacturer is also responsible for the safety of it.

senectus1··on OpenAI Feared "Optics" of what might appear on Hacker News
the AI isnt going to destroy jobs in numbers large enough to blip the unemployment stats more thna a qtr a percent.

the economics of those companies will cause a catastrophic wipe out of jobs across the board.

senectus1··on Zelensky says Russia has widened attacks to hit Ukraine's data centres
I said from the beginning that the west backing Ukraine wasnt so much about having ukraine win, it was more about letting Russia break its teeth on ukraine.

its fucked up and while i cheer on The US/Germany/France/Poland etc backing Ukraine, they're all guilty of paricipating in the drawn out decimating of Ukraine.

senectus1··on Show HN: A game about fake news and memes
I like it, its a bit clunky on the desktop though. the real and fake took me a while to find on a big high rest screen.

I'd appreciate better formatting of the blind spot and "you got it wrong" results.

I feel like this is less about news and more about urban legends and old wives tales.

would be very interested in seeing this become more contemporary and up to date with more recent events.

senectus1··on Australia says OpenAI agent hacked into government website
i dont understand why they dont treat this as criminal tresspass.

the legal system exists for a reason. use it!

senectus1··on US criticises Australia's proposed algorithm opt-out laws as 'censorship'
i dont understand how letting users choose not to something is censorship... Is my curated RSS feed censorship?
senectus1··on An update on how we confirm your age group on Discord
i dont like it, but.... its their platform. Dont like it, dont use it.

I think i'm going to run down the dont use it path, which is a shame, because i do use it atm.

senectus1··on Not all AI workers think the tech could kill everyone
>it cant get any worse

lol

you aint seen nuthin yet.

senectus1··on Not all AI workers think the tech could kill everyone
not just, its also very likley to be the tool used to create civil unrest and even war.

the damage it can do to the masses by misinformation or ragebating by feeding everyone its own paticular echo chamber is was too often not even spoken about.

senectus1··on US troop deaths during Iran war exceed Pentagon count by at least four
who cares?

no seriously.. who cares?

the administration sure doesnt, such cavlier attitudes to their own constituents is astounding.

senectus1··on How OpenAI Used Its Own LLMs to Design Its Jalapeño Chip
yup, but it'll take about 3-5 years.
senectus1··on Minimal Phone 2
if the claim is trusted. yeah
senectus1··on US interest rates raised for first time in three years
well thats one way to get out of having to pay back your loans :-|

senectus1··on Australia says it could follow Canada in forging deeper ties with EU

senectus1··on Oil Executives Say the Great Fuel Crisis Is Here
or getting those that didnt vote off their arses to go effing vote.

i swear to gods, the australian method of mandatory voting is the benchmark best way to do it.

senectus1··on I'm not addicted to the internet or my smartphone. I'm addicted to information
100%

I noticed this about myself about 25 years ago... before the internet really took off on the dopamine rollercoatser it is now.

senectus1··on Who gets to define the rules for AI?
good luck having those rules audited reliably.
senectus1··on Spaceships (Reverse Asteroid)
oh i really like this idea. very cool
senectus1··on Spaceships (Reverse Asteroid)
man, I loved that game.
senectus1··on AI is not a normal technology
sorry, while I'm no proponent of AI... you cant make this claim with anything more than "feels"

how can you be so sure that AI cant improve to a level where it has original thoughts, Creativity and imagination.

remember that our input is limited to our sensor capability. AI has an unlimited ability to add more sensors and as a consequence collect input that we are not aware of, then whats stopping it training on information we dont have access to?

you cant. no one can. we haven't maxed out this technology or the amount of compute we can throw at it yet. (we may have maxed out the economic viability of it though... I think we'll find out in the next 12-18 months.)

senectus1··on Eating Fruit Skins
I'd like to see the the cited source for that statement.. I've always eaten the skins of kiwi fruit. its offers a nice tangy counterpoint to the sweet flesh. Eating it without the skin just sounds boring.
senectus1··on Thelio Mira AI Linux Workstation: 192 GB GPU Memory
wouldnt you be better off maxing out the new Mac hardware? the memory bandwidth is insane on those jobbies
senectus1··on Samsung Debuts zHBM Prototype, Stacking Memory Directly on AI Accelerators
if all thats true, this is some impressive specs.
senectus1··on I'm sorry, you're not going to die from an AI-engineered supervirus
I dont 100% agree.

I agree an AI isnt going to create one. but the number of raving loons out there that think 5G chips are in vaccines are going to go absolutely stark raving mad the next time there is a pandemic.

then they'll be super susceptible to AI generated political adverts from the next fuckwit political hack trying to get into power.

looking at how the world is panning out atm moment... I expect AI to have a massive influence on the sort of idiots that will get voted into power and make decisions that will get a vast number of us killed. by all sorts of means... war, famine, unregulated corporate poisoning...

AI is going to get us killed, because we'll use it to kill ourselves.
