semigroupoid··on OpenDLSS: A Vulkan Reimplementation of Nvidia's DLSS 5 Neural Rendering Network
Because this was most likely written entirely by an LLM?
semigroupoid··on A liar who always lies says "All my hats are green."
Yes
semigroupoid··on Artificial Intelligence and Peace
I was referring specifically to the media coverage in 2021 and later that presented fairly large numbers (in the hundreds) of possible graves. However, per the article, none of them have been confirmed yet and a number of them even debunked.

I am not denying that there are large gravesites or that terrible things happened at those schools.

semigroupoid··on Artificial Intelligence and Peace
That may be a bit strong. What can be said is that a lot of the initial media outrage regarding the residential schools in the last few years were based on possible gravesites, discovered using ground-penetrating radar. However, multiple excavations have so far been unable to confirm those gravesites at the scales predicted, some of them even turned out to contain no human remains at all [0]. That does not excuse anything, but I find it troubling how many fairly strong claims are made in this thread with zero citations/evidence to back them up.

semigroupoid··on Are Real Numbers Real? (2017)
What? Of course, the sets of integers, rationals and reals respectively are not identical , but the integers are a subset of the rational and the rational a subset of the real numbers.

That feature has been dead for over ten years.
semigroupoid··on A neural network solves and generates mathematics problems by program synthesis
If I understand this correctly, the question (Codex Input) is asking for a solution using SymPy. So that would be the correct answer, right?
semigroupoid··on Germany locks down unvaccinated people, as leaders plan to make shots compulsory
Because the ICUs are at maximum capacity?!?
semigroupoid··on U.S. Covid death toll hits 1,500 a day amid delta scourge
According to this [0] at least BioNTech/Pfizer seem to be developing a booster shot specifically targeting the Delta variant. But they do mention that they’ve just recently “manufactured” the mRNA so it’s probably still months from being approved and ready to be deployed.

semigroupoid··on Germany pauses AstraZeneca vaccinations as a 'precaution'
Because it is not made in Germany. Pfizer is responsible for producing it and their plants are primarily in the US.
semigroupoid··on YouTube to remove content that alleges widespread election fraud
There is 5 volumes (!) worth of evidence, collected by the (bipartisan) Senate Intelligence Committee, showing that Russia did actively influence the 2016 election. What hasn’t been proven is collusion between Trump and Russia.

semigroupoid··on Watercooling a Canon R5 to enable unlimited 8K recording
The legislation outlining the tariffs in its version from 2006 [0, p. 577] lists the import tariff for a “video camera recorder” at 14%, whereas the version from last year [1, p. 601] lists it as “Free”. This seems to be the result of a WTO agreement [2].

semigroupoid··on What’s New in ES2019
Sure, but JavaScript isn't compiled but typically interpreted (or JITed).
semigroupoid··on Show HN: Muon, a low-level programming language inspired by C, C# and Go
It looks like you started with writing an interpreter in C#, then wrote the compiler in the language itself. Which is a cool concept, I must say. I can't fully wrap my head around the practicalities, though. Do you compile the compiler with an older version of itself during development?

This is called bootstrapping [0] and is common in compiler development.

semigroupoid··on Archaeologists explore a rural field in Kansas, and a lost city emerges
I don't think the situation is as simple as you make it out to be. Due to the geoblock, latimes.com clearly does not offer its services to people in the EU in the sense of Article 3.2(a) of the GDPR. Now, Article 3.2(b) states that the GDPR would still apply if they track your behavior while you are located in the EU. Since you are using a VPN it could be argued that, from the perspective of latimes.com, your behavior takes place in the US and not the EU and that therefore the GDPR does not apply.

semigroupoid··on Notes on Discrete Mathematics (2017) [pdf]
How do you work with smooth functions without using reals?
semigroupoid··on Notes on Discrete Mathematics (2017) [pdf]
One reason might be that exercises that ask for proofs often have several correct answers. It would probably be just as confusing to a beginning student to come up with a proof for some exercise and then see the author take a completely different approach in the provided solution. The student still wouldn't know whether his proof is correct or not.
semigroupoid··on GDPR for lazy people: Block all European users with Cloudflare Workers
Article 83 in general and specifically Art. 83 (2) state that "the degree of cooperation with the supervisory authority, in order to remedy the infringement and mitigate the possible adverse effects of the infringement" should be taken into account when determining penalties. We'll have to see what this means in practice though.

semigroupoid··on Abstract Algebra (2016) [pdf]
I second the recommendation for Artin's Algebra. I'd also recommend Paolo Aluffi's Algebra: Chapter 0, which is a nice alternative to Lang and also uses category theory right from the beginning and doesn't require many prerequisites.
