selykg··on OpenWrt 24.10.0 – First Stable Release
Hopefully this is a simple question. I have a busted (seemingly) EdgeRouter from Ubiquiti that needs replacing.

I am currently on an old ASUS that was from the before times and it's "fine" but not updated any longer (even with the 3rd party firmware). So I'm in the market to get something new.

What's a nice all in one unit for OpenWRT? I have a very small 1000sqft house so generally speaking I have zero issues with range and everything is wireless anyway. I just want reliability and set it and forget it, generally speaking.

selykg··on Vanguard's Average Fee Is Now Just 0.07% After Biggest-Ever Cut
I tend to only use the zero funds in tax advantaged accounts. Primary example, I needed to move an HSA to avoid a $20/month fee from the idiots at Health Equity when I switched jobs. Moved it immediately to Fidelity since they offer an HSA account and used the zero funds.

If I were to ever need to move the HSA money elsewhere, they can sell the funds to transfer, since it's not a taxable event, that's fine by me.

I won't buy the zero funds for my brokerage account though, I stick with Vanguard ETFs.

selykg··on Bluesky now has 30 million users
Boycotts can take on different levels. I'd personally say that if you already own an iPhone, Android phone, Mac or PC, you've already given them your money, but you can absolutely refuse to give more the next time around and buy something from another manufacturer that's not US based. But it doesn't make sense to just throw out your perfectly fine $1000+ device just to "stick it to the man."
selykg··on Science YouTuber physicsgirl (Dianna Cowern) stands for the first time in 2 yrs
Same! Prior to the pandemic I almost always got sick post flight. I now wear a mask and take better precautions and all that and haven't been sick after being a lot more cautious about it. Frankly, worth it for me as I'd often end up miserable for weeks after a trip. Minor inconvenience of wearing a mask and being more aware of what I'm doing results in far less pain later.
selykg··on We're bringing Pebble back
Never had this happen to me. Admittedly I am in a very rural area, and while I do sometimes get some gps points that are "off" it's generally very fast and accurate. Basically all the errors I've personally run into fall into what I'd consider acceptable margin of error.

Even in heavy tree cover on a remote island for a hike last year. It (Garmin Instinct 2X) was incredibly accurate.

selykg··on US will ban cancer-linked Red Dye No. 3 in cereal and other foods
I don't think anyone really cares or thinks there's some benefit. The problem is (I think) that this leads to some people believing that the dye causes cancer, when there's been no direct link in humans.

selykg··on Bye-bye Windows gaming? SteamOS officially expands past the Steam Deck
Entirely possible that someone isn't aware that alternatives exist! I was not aware until recently when I took up photography again and started looking for alternatives to Adobe.

The nice bonus is that there are plenty of guides out there to teach how to migrate between Lightroom and darktable/rawtherapee. As someone who doesn't have much experience with Lightroom it was actually more difficult to learn I think because I wasn't sure how best to even edit photos, now that I have learned some basics there it was mostly figuring out how to do that in darktable.

Masks were a little bit of an interesting conundrum, and I think one of the bigger losses switching to darktable might be the lack of AI masks, if someone is dependent on those for any reason.

As a hobbyist darktable fills the need for me I think.

selykg··on Microsoft should be terrified of SteamOS
I don’t mind the size but it does make it prohibitively more difficult to travel with compared to the Switch (slightly) but especially so compared to old handhelds like the DS and Vita.

I generally keep my Steam Deck at home and play from the couch. It’s awesome to be able to pick it up, play a game for 15 minutes, hit the power button to suspend. Come back later and pickup where I left off. The Switch does this as well but the Steam Deck supports games more my genre and style so it gets more use.

selykg··on Bye-bye Windows gaming? SteamOS officially expands past the Steam Deck
darktable or Rawtherapee will probably run just fine on the SteamDeck!
selykg··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
I mean, I get it, it's a whole can of worms. Also, sorry, little late to the reply here!

I think there's like a couple of major areas where it concerns me I guess. The first is when we use these types of technologies to fool people, especially (recently) politically.

The other is when we are talking about photography as art.

For someone's home photos, I really don't much mind. Do as you please I guess, if you want to remember the time and place differently than it was, so be it lol.

But it's really wild that in some cases we have art that starts as a photograph and then becomes something else entirely after editing. It takes all the patience, planning, understanding and in my opinion gratification out of it when you can just say "yea, replace the sky with this fake one so my picture looks incredibly unrealistic"

Those are the two that tend to cause me the most head shaking lately I guess.

selykg··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
Frustrating to me, too, as someone who has recently gotten back into photography and it's difficult to know whether the photos I am using as inspiration are actually real or so highly edited that I'd never be able to achieve something similar.

It's one thing to use masks to edit highlights/shadows/color balance for certain areas (skies, buildings, people, etc) but it's an entirely different thing to completely replace the sky, or remove objects because they aren't "appealing"

selykg··on Apple squandered the Holy Grail
I can't speak to Europe, but in the US in a very rural location, I never have speed limit issues to begin with. I believe I have also submitted a couple of changes for small things, and they've all been handled so far as I can tell as I have not run into them again.

Probably typical in that Apple's services in the US are generally better than elsewhere, but just wanted to add a positive with my experience and acknowledge that it's likely better here due to location within the US.

selykg··on Books I Loved Reading in 2024
I dedicate time to it almost every day. I also have a book club with a friend to keep me a bit outside my comfort zone.
selykg··on Books I Loved Reading in 2024
I would call it reading. But it’s up to the person.

Ultimately I find time for both. I completed 30 books in 2024. 2-3 of them were audiobooks I think. They count in my opinion.

selykg··on Forced to upgrade
I always trade my phones in to Apple, who reuse/recycle large portions of it.

Not sure if there's a better document that talks more about it, that was just what I could quickly find.

selykg··on Show HN: Yami – An Open Source Music Player with Spotdl Integration
Possibly, but "Cool..." is hardly adding any value, whatsoever. In this case the poster should've simply said nothing unless they had something of value to say. This is sort of the second point I was quoting. There are a number of points in the guidelines that try to get people to add value to the conversation.

> the billowing clouds of meta that tends to generate are worse (guideline-worse, no less!) than the fluffy comment itself.

Well, at the end of the day you contributed to that with your own comment.

selykg··on Show HN: Yami – An Open Source Music Player with Spotdl Integration
The ... can be read as sounding very dismissive.

But also, it really didn't add anything to the discussion even if that wasn't the intention. Hence the second point I added from the guidelines. So, I see two potential areas of improvement.

selykg··on Show HN: Yami – An Open Source Music Player with Spotdl Integration
From the Guidelines:

> Be kind. Don't be snarky. Converse curiously; don't cross-examine. Edit out swipes.

> Please don't post shallow dismissals, especially of other people's work. A good critical comment teaches us something.

selykg··on Trump wins presidency for second time
So many times I have seen women say "we aren't ready for a woman president, they're too hysterical"

The misogyny is so deep that women experience it from other women.

selykg··on Trump wins presidency for second time
God, this stupid tariff thing again. All tariffs are going to do is raise costs, so we'll go back to inflation being insane.
selykg··on Traveling with Apple Vision Pro
Certain types of travel will always exist. But traveling for work? That's an entire idea I can get behind avoiding.
selykg··on GitHub notification emails used to send malware
True, but I have worked at companies who employ users that maybe aren't entirely up to speed on the technical details and they have GitHub account's for submitting bug reports. This would very easily fool some of these people.

Technical people might spot this, but that also isn't a free pass for GitHub to not do better here.

selykg··on Why Oxide Chose Illumos
Joyent also merged with TextDrive, which is where the FreeBSD part came from. TextDrive was an early Rails host, and could even do it in a shared hosting environment, which is where I think a lot of the original user base came from (also TextPattern)

As I recall they were also the original host of Twitter, which if I recall was Rails back in the day.

selykg··on Apple Watch Series 10
I think it depends entirely on what you want to do.

Do you want a smart watch or fitness watch? I think if you want a real smart watch you're better off with something else, like an Apple Watch.

If you're looking for fitness, I think the Forerunner series is a great starting point. What you'd want to do is look at what you _want_ to do and then go look at the specs for each watch.

For example, if you want to see maps on your watch and get turn-by-turn, that's not available on all watches, and you'll have to move way up the range to get it.

If you want to run, do strength training, monitor your heart rate all day, sleep score, HRV, etc. Those are usually available on all devices.

Their training readiness is another interesting option, that's only available on the higher end watches. Same with endurance score, and a few others.

I have an Instinct 2X because I really like the battery life (40 days just as a watch, I get around 30 or so with a workout every day). The 2X is a pretty big watch though, at 50mm. There are 2 and 2S models that are smaller though.

Usually the sizing goes S for small, just a number for the middle range size, and X for larger size.

With the Forerunner you get more features as you go up the number range. So 1xx, 2xx, and 9xx are the more common model ranges.

I think for most people the 255/265 are pretty good starting points and can often be had at pretty nice prices on sale. I think I paid $250 for my Instinct on a sale recently, might have been $350.

If the Enduro 3 was available at the time I might have gone with that.

Another option is looking at Coros, I think bang for buck, they're the better option usually. The Pace 3 is a stellar watch at that price range. My only complaint with Coros is they don't do ANT+ and that's a feature I kind of want/need since I have a number of devices greater than the typical bluetooth stream count (usually they max out at 2 bluetooth connections simultaneously). But if Garmin ditches MIP displays, I'm switching to Coros.

Edit: Also, based on Garmin's pricing for the Fenix 8 and Enduro 3, I'm really afraid to see the pricing for new models going forward. $800+ for a fitness watch is nuts. The other models are likely to come in under that, but, Enduro 3 went down in price (weirdly) but the Fenix 8 is up rather significantly over the Fenix 7 and Epix that it replaces.

selykg··on Ask HN: Why no transflective LCD portables?
Seems it's definitely showing up in fewer devices. Fenix 8 only offers it on two of the 3 sizes. It remains on the Enduro 3. For those that aren't aware, Fenix 8 blends the Epix and Fenix together. It's available in 3 sizes with two different displays (AMOLED and MIP) but the MIP option only exists on the 2 larger sizes, and AMOLED is on all 3.

There are a couple of other models but they're older, the Fenix 8 and Enduro 3 just came out earlier this month or late last month, I forget as time flies. But there's the Forerunner 955 and 255, then there's the Instinct 2 series (2S, 2, and 2X). There might be others I'm forgetting, but I'm assuming there isn't likely to be a lot of MIP options going forward.

Coros watches are MIP though, which I would probably switch to if Garmin stops making affordable MIP watches... the pricing on the Fenix 8 and Enduro 3 are nutty. $800+

selykg··on iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max
I'm sure you're aware of this, but bringing it up in case you aren't. On newer Face ID models, you can swipe down on the bottom of the screen (the little grey bar) and it'll toggle the reachability feature so the top of the screen comes into the middle of the display. Basically shoving everything down.

I understand it's not ideal, but I find it a valuable feature when I must operate one handed and sometimes struggle with the same issue.

selykg··on ReMarkable Paper Pro
Too risky anymore. Is it an open box item sold as new? Is it a counterfeit? Is it actually just a brick that was sent in a box to you?

Plus, Amazon controls everything, and if we get philosophical here I'd rather support individual companies and buy my products locally if possible. I can order my furnace filters from Amazon. They are a tiny bit cheaper, but it's getting increasingly difficult to go buy them locally at a store. This trend has only gotten worse and while maybe a furnace filter is something you can wait to get a replacement for, there are other items where it's just better if you can get them the same day, particularly those that you might not be entirely sure is exactly what you want/need, and/or you're choosing sizes.

But our ability to make that type of purchase is going away because people blindly buy from Amazon, which is often more expensive than buying locally now. Gone are the days that Amazon was cheaper.

selykg··on AirPods Pro 2 adds 'clinical grade' hearing aid feature
As I recall it was a couple hundred bucks for the ear pieces plus the cost of the AirPods. So, yea, probably around the same price as MSRP AirPods Max.
selykg··on Apple Watch Series 10
As a Garmin watch user, I don't mind the bulk, it's mostly the general _shape_ of the Apple Watch that kills me. It's shaped in such a way that it just sorta knocks into things in weird ways.

I'm ultimately still very glad I ditched the Apple Watch in lieu of a more fitness oriented watch but still like to keep an eye on what they're doing. Looks like a decent upgrade for someone that hasn't upgraded in several generations.
