sellmesoap··on Txt: A fast, keyboard-driven terminal text editor for engineers
Yes and how we here on HN have a front row seat for these brand new repos (no shade on OPs project) Hold on to your crypto/fiat credentials ladies and gents! I bet the anti virus labs are having a hoot in this LLM enhanced craze.

sellmesoap··on Europe's "Less" Is Doing More Than Anyone Gives It Credit For
I can spend more on a phone then I did on my last car, although I pay half my car's purchase price every year I pay for insurance so I shouldn't be bragging!

It's counter intuitive in the way that the price of fuel has gone up over that time (causing prices on many things to rise because most things have a little oil in their price tag due to production and transport etc.), so in terms of buying fuel then and now how much is 1BTU worth?
sellmesoap··on From Git to Fossil (2025)
I think one thing about git needing rust (or python or Perl) is that each language dependency adds another good sized chunk of storage for the language and its tools/packager, I have a relatively light project using Tauri Svelte and code mirror, my build directory/cache becomes 18gb in the blink of an eye, that's a whole bloated modern operating system as a side effect of building a text editor, I should just wrap webkit-GTK around a redbean with some js libs in a directory, script the middleware in Lua and call it a day :D And don't get me wrong I like the development workflow with Tauri, it feels very performant, and easy to reason with, just the sheer disk space makes me boggle!

I believe there have been a number of crusades started around people's behavior and usually get a code of conduct book thrown at them. I remember a notable Python dev who had this happen to him, over sharing some humor from an old SNL skit related to a poorly chosen acronym for some tech, an otherwise extremely helpful and resourceful person got hammered and drumed out of the community. The rust community may have that same tone policing vibe. I enjoy and appreciate the value of using rust, and nix, both have this vibe at times and I make sure I "don't cross the streams" it sure has a stifling effect.

I think what will keep the industry afloat, all else failing, is the surveillance industry! Nothing like a fat reoccurring cheque from the government to check if little Jimmy is committing thought crime!
sellmesoap··on Waymo pulls over, calls cops on juvenile riders who had 'ghost gun"
Or worse the waymo gets put in to 'gang mode' by someone bribed on the inside, the car rolls the window down for the drive by, delivers the duffle bags of drugs, auto darkens the windows for a drive by kidnapping, think of the UX possibilities!
sellmesoap··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
I've had a few over the years, currently I have a 36’ steel sailboat, it has a lot of insulation so it's cosy in the winter. I live ashore at the moment, but for 1 person 36' is too big even. I can shower with hot water (propane on demand heater and a 12v water pump), the toilet is small, I also hit the local pool from time to time for a shower. My solar + 4 golf cart lead acid batteries runs a small compressor fridge and a loptop. I sail it around the coast (bc gulf islands), but mostly its parked in its spot.
sellmesoap··on GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released
That is a positive progression for sure. I guess it sounds like RCS is gatekept behind a play store API on the android side so there isn't an open source solution quite yet? Mostly I'm lamenting that even with signal there's meta-data you can infer behavior from. I know Session messenger has a bit of a network shuffle (is it garlic routing?) That blurs metadata collection a bit, but then they watered down several of Signals' security/privacy choices. I'm constantly curious and overwhelmed at the choice of text communication platforms, just so many!
sellmesoap··on GrapheneOS' rewritten Messages app is released
SMS is a defacto carrier tech that people expect to work, people also don't expect e2ee or any kind of privacy scheme on SMS but it might be a place to hand communication off to a different tech. Whereas RCS leaks meta data to the goog or worse (I don't know the ins and outs of RCS) but by default I would trust it less then signal, who may also collect meta data leaked through the goog, so I guess the real solution is to be boring and assume there is no security or privacy for anyone of reasonable means.

Every bathtub I've met has an overflow drain near the top, although maybe that drain is smaller then the output of my faucet, good thing mine isn't connected to the internet :D, YMMV.

sellmesoap··on We built our house for LAN parties (2024)
I've lived aboard boats for about 17 years of my life, I feel more comfortable squished into a boat then living on land, the sounds and movement are somehow reassuring. When my family moved ashore I got my first PC and I would host LAN parties, I also enjoy cooking so I would prepare a bunch of casaroles, everyone would pitch in and then skip sleep for most of a long weekend. Sometimes I see some old big boat with large generators for sale and contemplate packing a lan party on board, being out in some quiet ancorage with your friends fragging away sounds like a dream to me! I've seen your house on here a couple of times I love your setup!
sellmesoap··on Doomscrolling ourselves to death
I check a lot of those boxes, Abe Simpsons said it best [0], but I get to keep a weather eye on the new lingo through my kids. I remember being a teen and a lot of jibba-jabba that followed, stuff that came up from my people didn't stick, but I can catch up with them and drop a phrase and we all have a laugh. Yes, the water resistance is what keeps my phone from dying if I go for a hike in the rain or a small splashy boat ride, replacing the water damaged motherboard isn't as sustainable as buying a used flagship phone from an earlier time.

sellmesoap··on Being kicked out of the tech industry
Family court type things as well. I notice friends I have who are highly effective in big orgs can take care of themselves with mental health days on the regular. I've too often found myself in a role where the company 'needed' me to keep my holiday leave short because the bus factor was too low, such a drag!
sellmesoap··on Being kicked out of the tech industry
I also see kindness and concern on here, we get what we give! It's a thing to glom onto drama, and in this attention economy it's easy to fall down a dopamine spiral, even on a algo-lite platform such as this. Hello my name is sellmesoap and I'm a hacker-news-aholic!
sellmesoap··on Chicken products recalled in five states due to “false marks of inspection”
The last time I had salmonella like food poisoning in Canada was likely a plate of vegetarian linguini in a small town restaurant. Could be someone grabbed my plate while processing meat or who knows... Meanwhile our food regulation folks are busy culling herds a year+ after a reported bird flu infection, or herds of cattle/raindeer at great emotional and financial cost only to have tests come back clean. Maybe we need to acknowledge when actions are more destructive then protective and course correct, issue apologies and make financial repairs to those affected. It sure makes for a lot of negative publicity for agencies tasked with protecting the public.

Seems to me that it's a challenge to make an apple account without adding a credit card to your account as well. A carfully chosen Linux distro (so many options!) is the way to avoid the brunt of these privacy issues, lots of open software calls home in some way or another so user beware!

Much like people being arrested for online statements in the UK, while violent crime is swept under the rug or otherwise downplayed.
sellmesoap··on Incident with Github.com
Are you the user or the product? You can be both with GitHub! GitHub provide a compelling product, enough to become the defacto forge for many. But their reputation has taken a lot of hits, as a grey beard I'm salty since the Microsoft takeover, the downtime is just the leaky diaper icing.

To diagnose at a distance it feels like they need a stronger QA process, it's a product that scales horizontally, but somehow they find a way to break it for everyone on the regular! They need less hub and more node!
