selfishgene··on Larry David and the Game Theory of Anonymous Donations
You may not be aware but the issue of anonymous donations has been a hot topic on the MIT campus after MIT president Rafael Reif refused to stop taking anonymous donations in response to students who made this demand during protests that were calling for his resignation.

It has been said by the US Supreme Court that sunlight is the best disinfectant, and there are now a few international organizations out there which are fighting hard for increased transparency ... like GlobalWitness:

https://www.globalwitness.org/en/campaigns/corruption-and-mo...

Would not be surprised one day to learn that Alex Acosta received, for example, an unrecorded beneficial interest in real estate owned by Mr. Epstein in exchange for that "sweetheart deal," if the appointment by Trump to labor secretary was not reward enough.

selfishgene··on Larry David and the Game Theory of Anonymous Donations
Research Alert: Martin Nowak is the same Harvard professor who invited a convicted child rapist by the name of Jeffrey Epstein onto the Harvard University campus and gave him an office and a flattering web page on his program's website for several years until victims of sexual abuse at Harvard forced him to take it down.

This article was probably written to defend MIT president Rafael Reif's decision to mark Epstein's post-conviction donations to MIT as anonymous.

While Epstein was still alive, he was paying Nowak to publish articles about how punishment usually serves "no noble purpose," presumably because Epstein was still scared that he could be re-indicted on sex-trafficking charges despite attorney Allen Dershowitz' heroic efforts to secure an immunity deal for Epstein that protected him from future prosecution ... as well as all of his co-conspirators (think all of the professors who visited him on "Pedophile Isle").

In light of Epstein's "facilitation" of the mega-donations from billionaires Glenn Dubin and Les Wexner to Harvard, this article certainly strikes a resonant chord:

selfishgene··on Ask HN: Co-workers paid more. What to do?
We won't know what is "correct, just and fair" until there is a lot more transparency in the system.

All salary info of companies should be made publicly available after a recent study by a major consulting firm in Boston concluded that after looking at all of the different metrics that HR has proposed to evaluate employees, nothing correlated particularly well with level of employee compensation.

Companies that purchase access from credit-reporting agencies like Experian can learn a lot about their employees previous salary history.

All employees have by way of recourse is access to the high NSR data available on spam-filled recruiting websites like Glassdoor.

selfishgene··on Ask HN: Co-workers paid more. What to do?
Of course it's the OP's call to make. Most companies have a finite set of resources from which they can draw to reward employees, except maybe defense contractors.

If someone is not competent and is hurting the team effort, it is not badmouthing that person to express your concern.

selfishgene··on Reveal.js: HTML presentation framework
TeXmacs will probably meet my needs then ... not as much sizzle and flash as reveal.js, but better WYSIWYG support for technical content.

For anyone still looking for an open source editor:

Is the WYSIWYG editor on slides.com open source for those of us who would like to run it locally and not have to trust a binary?

selfishgene··on Quiver: A modern commutative diagram editor
Wonder how difficult it would be to integrate this directly into a tool like TeXmacs which could use something like this?
selfishgene··on Eric Schmidt is working to launch a university
MIT became a rich institution because of its ties to the military.

Lincoln Laboratory is often called a "PhD graveyard" for good reason: it's where reject academics who were denied tenure go to die.

selfishgene··on Eric Schmidt is working to launch a university
My favorite quote is at the end:

"Per the report, the Digital Service Academy would serve as a third reservoir for the best and brightest technology workers, but one that would ideally produce graduates imbued with a sense of government duty."

... because places like MIT and Stanford sure as hell don't!

It looks like Schmidt just wants the next generation of students to forgo their dreams of starting the next Google.

I think a better idea to help this country stay competitive is for companies like Google to stop offshoring their operations ... and pay their goddamn taxes like the rest of us.

selfishgene··on Structure and Interpretation of Classical Mechanics
Thanks ... that looks great! I always preferred Sara Bander's HTML version of SICP to the PDF version that is available for free download at everyone's favorite online bookstore.

If someone is looking for the PDF format of SICM, that's available now too for the second edition.

selfishgene··on X410 – X Server for Windows 10
Are VSOCK connections available yet in any open source remote X desktop solutions?

Xpra, X2Go, VcXSrv, Cygwin, FreeRDP, ...

selfishgene··on X410 – X Server for Windows 10
Has anyone compared X410 performance over VSOCK to FreeRDP's Thincast Workstation, which is an "optimized for graphics" remix of Virtual Box?

Does Xpra support VSOCK connection between host and guest (which avoids latency of network stack) with WSL like X410?

selfishgene··on FreeRDP 2.0 – A Remote Desktop Protocol implementation
Have you tried FreeRDP's Thincast Workstation (based on VirtualBox)?

http://www.freerdp.com/2019/02/20/hi-thincast-workstation

I know it's still in beta, but it was originally released two years ago and I'm still not able to boot ubuntu's mini.iso installation media in this graphics-optimized version of VirtualBox.

Interested also if anyone who has been able to get Thincast workstation to boot linux can compare it to a Hyper-V linux virtual machine connected to X410 through VSOCK:

https://x410.dev/cookbook/hyperv/using-x410-with-hyper-v-lin....

VSOCK could improve RDP latency since it should be faster than a localhost network socket.

selfishgene··on Is It Time to Rethink Globalized Supply Chains?
In light of the recent evacuation order issued by MIT administration over concerns about the spread of COVID-19, students should rethink whether or not the campus experience is really worth the exorbitant price that schools like MIT are charging for it.

Perhaps it's time now for the "globalized supply chain" of higher education to go online.

A recent hacker news article talked about the precipitous decline in applications for on-campus business school degrees. If that trend continues, maybe future MBA's can lead the way on this one.

selfishgene··on One way to fight a coronavirus recession: $1k for every American
I like how Mankiew nonchalantly remarks that $1000 "sounds about right."

Wonder if he consulted any of the models in his widely used Macroeconomics textbook in order to reach this profound conclusion.

I think an even better way to help people right now would include Congress putting an end to the price gouging of students who are forced to pay as much as $200 dollars a pop to purchase textbooks (like Mankiew's Macroeconomics) for their classes.

And there's an idea for Bernie Sanders too, who is gasping for breath on the campaign trail now: instead of promising "free tuition" handouts, how about asking government to play a role in establishing "fair tuition" (much like Medicare already does in health care for seniors) that reflects the true costs of educating students (using the latest technologies) in subjects that lead to real jobs, after universities have been forced to cut the fat (starting from the top!) out of their bloated university administrations.

selfishgene··on What happened to Google's effort to scan university library books? (2017)
Libgen happened.
selfishgene··on Simple Sabotage Field Manual (1944) [pdf]
Would not be all that surprised if someone were to feel sufficiently inspired by this document to draft a similar pamphlet for disaffected employees of tech companies who spy on their employees and/or abuse their customers' privacy.

What would covert acts of "simple sabotage" look like at a company like Google, Amazon, Microsoft, or Facebook?

selfishgene··on 'Patient zero' in cyberattack on UN aviation agency was official's son (2019)
Two systems of justice in many countries ... one for the have's and one for the have-not's.

In Massachusetts, Governor Charlie Baker's son was not even arrested:

selfishgene··on Young people are funneled into fields that don’t reward risk-taking
Answer: Repeal the exclusionary zoning laws in this country's most overpriced real estate markets that are making it so difficult for young people to purchase their first homes. In fact, the regressive zoning laws are artificially inflating the price of many older folks' homes, which is precisely what is allowing them in many cases to pursue the more creative, higher risk career paths.

According to his Wikipedia page, Tyler Cowen is a committed free-market ideologue who still believes in the "meritocracy myth" (also formerly known as the "American Dream").

Got news for Cowen, this country's economy has long moved on since the days back when he earned that Harvard PhD!

As a next semester reading assignment for Cowen, I'd like to suggest Thomas Piketty's book Capital in the Twenty-First Century.

selfishgene··on Australia’s top researchers urge politicians: “Listen to the science”
Let's remember that sometimes one man's science can be another's religion.

Applying the label "science" doesn't remove any of the uncertainty associated with many so-called "scientific conclusions."

In this regard, psychology is not all that different from climate change.

selfishgene··on Australia’s top researchers urge politicians: “Listen to the science”
Should politicians treat psychological research as "science" ... and if so, what p-value should be considered politically acceptable?
