sekai··on Ask HN: Employers, why do you want us back in the office?
> I've seen this idea repeated many times, but in over 20 years in the tech industry

Exactly, and how many of those conversations are wasted on nothing? Sure, there's a social element to it, so how about we highlight that aspect and not some "lightbulb" moment that derives from small talk.

sekai··on Twitter API Pricing
One major reason to provide an API for a website like Twitter is to reduce the load from sloppy scraping and other actions people are going to do either way. This seems like a mistake.
sekai··on Twitter API Pricing
Well, clearly not.

Quote from @TwitterDev:

"Starting February 9, we will no longer support free access to the Twitter API, both v2 and v1.1. A paid basic tier will be available instead"

sekai··on AI Generated Seinfeld runs 24/7 on Twitch
Wait till you find out how talented people are using AI, AI is but a tool, it's up to the user how to employ it.
sekai··on Extracting training data from diffusion models
> A lot of that existing content is copyrighted, and demonstrably present in the resulting product; so these companies have an uphill battle _not_ to be stopped by the courts.

These lawsuits will go exactly like in the war against piracy, impossible to win. Cut one head off, ten more appear.

sekai··on Extracting training data from diffusion models
Nothing, no one can stop this now. It's like horses being angry at cars.
sekai··on New AI classifier for indicating AI-written text
> Take me away from this AI hell

People used to say that about electricity too, and cars, and planes, and computers. This is just the next step in the chain.

sekai··on Show HN: ELI5 Powered by GPT-3
It's pretty similar, plagiarized is not really the right word for it. It's more like learning.
sekai··on Google’s Fuchsia OS was one of the hardest hit by last week’s layoffs
> I wonder if all these massive amounts of layoffs from huge companies are designed to flood the employment markets with candidates and drive wages down long term?

Massive? Head count is back to like it was on 2021, for all of the major tech companies.

sekai··on US Marines defeat DARPA robot by hiding under a cardboard box
Kojima predicted this
sekai··on Boston Dynamics’ bipedal robot Atlas can now grab and toss
Wait till you hear how that compares to human driving.
sekai··on OpenAI used Kenyan workers on less than $2 per hour to make ChatGPT less toxic
> Creating opportunity is great: do that without exploiting people - that isn't a requirement. Praise opportunity given. Denounce exploitations not to remove opportunities - but to improve them.

How much should they pay the workers though? It's already stated that they are paid well above average wage in said country.

sekai··on The FBI Identified a Tor User
Source? NordVPN was and is owned by Tesonet.
sekai··on Microsoft eyes $10B bet on ChatGPT
eh, it's all PR, no one really wants to be associated with that, one of the reasons why Apple forced Tumblr to remove porn which in turn decimated Tumblr's user base.
sekai··on Microsoft eyes $10B bet on ChatGPT
> Don't forget its ever increasing wack a mole game of non-openness in regards to censorship, wrongthink and pornography.

That's because they want to make money, good luck attracting investors when your tool lists benefits of Nazi ideology or generates minor porn novels.

sekai··on Stable Diffusion macOS native app
Why would law regulate how art is made? Should they ban photoshop also?
sekai··on Stable Diffusion macOS native app
From whom, specifically? People who claim this don't really understand how AI is generating images.
sekai··on Telegram: No-SIM Signup, Auto-Delete All Chats, Topics 2.0 and more
> Telegram launched a silly username auction that I won't link here. It essentially turns usernames into NFTs.

They need to make money somehow? Not really an issue for users who don't care about unique usernames.

sekai··on Tell HN: ChatGPT can reply like a specific Reddit or HN user, including you
Thing is, I still believe behind your comment is a real person. In a year or two? Not so much.
sekai··on The “je ne sais quoi” of TikTok
Exactly TikTok is just Vine with longer videos, no one was calling Vine a social network.
sekai··on Musk’s first email to Twitter staff ends remote work
> Elon Musk says remote workers are just pretending to work.

Hehe, I wonder how does he think how 100% remote companies continue to work and excel.

sekai··on Eli Lilly stock fell by $20B because of a fake tweet about free insulin
This is nonsense, overall healthcare (including Eli Lilly) stock selloffs started before the tweet.
sekai··on Tether's USDT Stablecoin Slips from $1 Peg
Yeah, it's a non-story, it's almost never exactly 1:1 in secondary markets.
sekai··on Update on Supply of iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max
> Once there's no real reason for them to play nice with the west, we're going to see more problems.

What's new? They're not playing nice since Xi took over.

sekai··on Starlink Aviation
> Like sending Ukraine "free" base stations and charging them $4,500 a month for service.

Are there any alternatives? Nope. Also, let's not talk about how SpaceX "should" sponge up the costs, because you would not ask Lockheed Martin or Raytheon Technologies to do that. Compared to regular prices of military hardware, Starlink costs nothing.

sekai··on “Women are wonderful” effect
> "Benevolent" is describing the context of the sexism, not judging that the sexism itself is morally good.

> The context of the term still heavily implies that "benevolent sexism" is a moral/social failure.

So...let's just call it sexism?

sekai··on Notice of termination of Twitter merger agreement
> Tesla and SpaceX success is depending on the public opinion of Musk

No it does not, SpaceX results speak for themselves, they have no competition. Same with Tesla, just check their vehicles sold charts.

sekai··on Kazakhstan president proposes reforms to limit his powers
Uhh, wrong? Baltics are stable like any western counterpart.
sekai··on Jeff Bezos’ Space Joyride Emitted a Lifetime’s Worth of Carbon Pollution
> the commercialization of space travel is not.

You'd have to be naive to expect that capitalism will not bring in innovation and improvement to Space exploration / solutions. I'm all for it.

sekai··on MacBook Pro 14-inch and MacBook Pro 16-inch
It's not useless, remember that full-screen is thing?
