seizethecheese··on Trump administration is suspending Microsoft from a green card program
I feel the whole h1b program is ill-conceived.

The “can’t find local worker” requirement is a farce and a lottery is a stupid way to get the best people into the country.

I personally feel there should be a set number of foreign worker slots, set by labor market conditions per industry. Then, auction the slots to companies.

Having to buy the visa would force the hiring to the areas of most need, objectively, and get around the farce. Then, just let the companies bring in exactly who they want.

Auction money could go towards lowering domestic worker income tax.

I’ve experienced working with h1b workers that are not great, but this characterization is a bit rich. All of the massively valuable big tech companies have a ton of these workers. There’s no way they are like random people pulled off the street.
seizethecheese··on Mistral Large 4
I read that site quite differently from you. You seem to be analyzing absolute differences but ROI is really about ratio of spending to revenue.

It looks like Mistral is middle of the pack, behind Anthropic and ahead of OpenAI on that front. All of those labs are way "ahead" of the cloud providers, but those providers are building infrastructure, not just training models, so it's not apples to apples.

seizethecheese··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
The comment said "relatively fixed" and a charitable reading that "relatively" here means in the short run.
seizethecheese··on Micron CEO Says Memory Supply Will Be Much Tighter in 2027 and 2028 Than in 2026
You seem to be adding a lot of intentionality to price swings that seem expected when supply is relatively fixed while demand fluctuates. (Maybe you’re right, but it’s not the simpler explanation.)
seizethecheese··on Clef: Open-weight decision models, and new RL fine-tuning platform
I commend you for actually answering, independent of what I think of the answers.
seizethecheese··on Clef: Open-weight decision models, and new RL fine-tuning platform
Name a few of these low hanging fruit left around.
seizethecheese··on The AI Race Just Got Awkward
The conversation here is mostly moral and ethical but the problem here seems to be financial.

Anthropic and OpenAi are spending a $$$$ to "distill" human output into an AI model, then others are spending $$ to distill their AI model into a near-equivalent model.

This is the same reason IP rights exist. On the surface, something like a patent feels ludicrious and even feels morally wrong. Some guy wrote down the recipe for arranging atoms or bits in a particular way, and now I can't!? However, it's designed to solve the same problem, figuring out and describing the process is much more costly than replicating it.

seizethecheese··on September 2026: The world today, as seen by one Polish guy
The civilized world is certainly designed for humans and by humans, though.

seizethecheese··on 1 in 8 cancer cases worldwide are caused by infections, study finds
Maybe it’s that I have young kids, but even knowing my death at 80 would be horrible, I’d choose that over a painless death at 45 in a heartbeat. I’d beg and pray for that outcome.
seizethecheese··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
I’m not quite sure I understand the API usage point as it relates to regular customers.
seizethecheese··on GPT 6.1 Sol: Near-Astra intelligence for a fifth of the price
People said the same about $200 a month. I think the ceiling is probably much higher. Companies regularly spend 10% or more of employee cost on offices, SaaS, equipment. I could see these costs going to 10% of white collar income.
seizethecheese··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
Quite frustrating as I can’t quite pin down how they adjust for this or whether there’s some massive discontinuity between ‘75 and ‘85
seizethecheese··on Everybody’s home. No one’s coming over
To play devils advocate screens could start with color television.
seizethecheese··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
What Economist’s title? You mean the nytimes article? If so the comment here implies they are the oil power because they are shifting energy demands while the truth is that it’s because they are the largest buyer.
seizethecheese··on U.S. Strategic Petroleum Reserve Falls to Lowest Level Since 1982
I was following until “China is now the world’s great oil power.” China imports a massive amount of oil and it’s at an all time high.
seizethecheese··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
It might be policy but it’s not that new. Millennial here, we had no trouble getting alcohol under 21.

I think Apple has demonstrated that shipping second has essentially no negative impact if your product is seen as higher quality.
seizethecheese··on Pirating the Pirates
I'm not saying I disagree, but very interesting how this contrasts with attitudes people have towards books. People keep physical books around just for kicks. Often times they haven't even read half the books on their shelves.
seizethecheese··on Owed a billion dollars in Nvidia stock
Title is definitely clickbait. At the same time it’s an interesting and well written article.

I bought bitcoin at $200 and sold at $400 thinking myself clever.

Half the tokens presumably means tasks get done twice as fast.
seizethecheese··on Allow Carriers on Planes
Yeah, and as someone who just travelled with three young kids I don’t think my party cost the airline less than our number of seats, probably a lot more. We required more attention from staff, made a bigger mess, and didn’t bring less stuff per person just because the kids are small.

Kids are already subsidized with free gate checking of strollers (to be fair, so are other things like skis on Alaska).

seizethecheese··on California is chasing wealth that has feet
To me the most egregious is inheritance not being taxed like income. You can get $10m in a year and pay less tax than a working person.
seizethecheese··on My weird new hobby: Wandering around Tokyo on Google Maps
It’s fun to go to random places not know for their beauty, too. There are walking tour videos of basically everywhere. New Delhi and Huancayo are ones I recall finding interesting
seizethecheese··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
I don’t think it was phrased awkwardly, I was just curious.
seizethecheese··on Why is the liver so weirdly regenerative?
Why would liver signal defiance?
seizethecheese··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
Wow, this feels like the worst of both worlds. You have to do it, and you need to jump through hoops. Feels like US federal tax system.
seizethecheese··on Unknown number of Texas voter registrations went unprocessed due to DPS error
Outside of the US spectrum, there are countries that require all citizens to vote or face fines (Peru for example). I find this interesting, because it's so out of sample compared to the typical political fights within the US about voter registration.
