seized··on Uber Eats Canada Ran Production in a MacBook Air
Blackberry Messenger had a ping built in. Nothing since has had an equivalent feature. It was absolutely amazing for getting someones attention urgently....

And for annoying friends in their meetings.

seized··on How Lee Valley built a cult-like following
Not even just woodworking tools, everything there is high quality.
seized··on Why is there a drink called 手打柠檬鸭屎香 = “hand-made lemon duck-feces fragrance”?
It's basically orange soda. I've had it a few times, not much different than other carbonated drinks.
seized··on Ask HN: Stock Android phone free of bloatware?
As a long time Pixel user.... Pixel.

My Pixel 5 is a perfect phone. Stable (125+ days uptime a few times), fast, no Samsung style bloat.

seized··on Plan 9: Expanding Your Grid (2013)
> I've heard of hobbyist SAP installations.

At that level of self loathing it seems much easier to just start using meth....

seized··on All IP addresses are equal? “Dot-zero” addresses are less equal (2013)
I've had several ISP routers come with .254 as the default IP, this that's the gateway.
seized··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
Except most jurisdictions have rules governing things like that.
seized··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
It's about common sense.

Police/fire/ambulances are there for emergencies, their drivers have better training (theoretically) in safe driving, and the vehicles bring attention to themselves.

Uncle Jim Bob trying to drive his Buick around is what's obviously prohibited as that's the vehicle/driver most likely to cause harm...

seized··on The rule says, “No vehicles in the park”
It explains what a Matchbox car is for the approximately zero people who don't know, but it doesn't explain a travois.

This seems to be an exercise in signage while simultaneously ignoring common sense...

seized··on USCG says ‘debris field’ discovered within search area for missing submersible
The podcast Black Box Down is also excellent for that, has a great overview of what went wrong and what was done to fix it or prevent it.

And also the gold standard of podcasts Well Theres Your Problem has done a few plane crashes.

seized··on Big leap for hard drive capacities: 32 TB HAMR drives due soon, 40tb on horizon
ZFS on Linux has exactly this, you can specify specific devices to hold metadata. Caveats apply, you need to mirror those devices for redundancy.

seized··on Manjaro is a free and open source Linux operating system that emphasizes privacy
The same Manjaro that keeps letting their TLS certificate expire....?
seized··on Apollo will close down on June 30th
Using Reddit via browser here, never used an app for it yet as I like tabs.
seized··on Scripts for Btrfs Maintenance
I just scrub my ZFS pools once in a while and that's it... OpenIndiana autosnap is the rest of it which is built in. Then Monit to check pool health and alert me automatically.
seized··on Scripts for Btrfs Maintenance
You can ZFS send back and forth between pools or to a new dataset to defrag/fix that, so it's not "permanent" as in can't ever be fixed. It also depends on workload, write once/read many is different from VM disk files.
seized··on 460-foot “battery tanker” set to ship electrons by 2026
Maybe they plan to swap batteries in and out of the ship, have a rotating set of ten (or whatever) batteries, one discharging, eight charging, load the tenth with a crane, swap out for the discharged one, cycle through...
seized··on Brute.Fail: Watch brute force attacks fail in real time
Fail2ban can work on more than just sshd.
seized··on Brute.Fail: Watch brute force attacks fail in real time
Not for other services... I have fail2ban parsing my NVR logs. Wrong password three times and it permanently blocks the IP on my Opnsense firewall.
seized··on Scan iPhone backups for traces of compromise by “Operation Triangulation”
Don't you mean discharged?
seized··on Family Photos vs 256 Kb RAM
Color E-ink is bad for that. Compare it's refresh times to a black and white one, those are much faster.
seized··on Removing support for forwarded ports
Torrents need a port open and forwarded.
seized··on Ask HN: Suggestions to host 10TB data with a monthly +100TB bandwidth
Glacier Deep Archive is exactly what you want for this, that would be something like $11/month ongoing, then about $90/TB in the event of retrieval download. Works well except for tiny (<150KB) files.

Note that there is Glacier and Glacier Deep Archive. The latter is cheaper but longer minimum storage periods. You can use it as a life cycle rule.

seized··on Since when did SSDs need water cooling?
Except hard drives aren't celebrated for reliability. Or speed. Or low latency. Or durability (try knocking one). Or power and heat. Old cars you can at least make some arguments for... Hard drives as primary storage/boot, no.

Really they're good for bulk storage. And that's it. For use in primary compute they're really great if you want to slow everything down.

seized··on Ask HN: What is the best media for long term archival storage?
I use AWS Glacier Deep Archive for exactly this, a few TB of photos, documents, etc.

RClone takes care of uploading to it. Works out to barely over $1/TB/month and AWS takes care of the media lifetime and all that.

I didn't bother with burned disks because then the backups are too local to me, nevermind spanking TBs across multiple disks.

seized··on Suspicious iOS KeePass Client
Except they are different. One is a clone, BitWarden also has a self hostable version of their own backend.
seized··on JunoDB: PayPal’s Key-Value Store Goes Open-Source
Aleppo, Syria. To block people sending money to terrorists (not stating that they are).
seized··on JunoDB: PayPal’s Key-Value Store Goes Open-Source
Someone whose account got banned because the invoice they issued via PayPal had "ALEP" in the license key contained within. Aleppo is the banned word.
seized··on Google will soon let Pixel phones double as dashcams
Except for malls, grocery stores, events, train station, movie theaters... Work...
seized··on Many soft contact lenses in US made up of PFAS, research suggests
Some of us have high prescriptions which make glasses expensive and horribly unpleasant to wear regardless of frame size or lens choice. I am at -11.5 and with enough astigmatism that modern LASIK isn't an option, id have to get the old "slice a flap off" style. Hard pass.
