Everyone on the internet knows how to run Twitter better than the richest man on earth who revolutionized both the electric car and private space industries. I wish I could invest in Twitter now but I’ll wait for the cryptocurrency launch.
No 25% every quarter. Essentially doubled our salaries to stay a year. Was a very profitable business being operated with a skeleton crew and we were burning out, there was no other option.
When things start getting really bad you make retention bonuses widespread. Was at a collapsing company and we all got a years salary paid quarterly for staying, but if you left before a year had to pay it back. Everyone was pleased.
It’s like HN discounts all his other successes and can’t believe he can attract high performing employees. He clearly solved much harder problems than short-form blog posting so it’s not a stretch to think he can flip Twitter back to an IPO quickly.
Bigco software engineering has been quite chill / slack-off for some time. Rude awakening for a lot of devs if they have been resting on their laurels.
It might be possible to train yourself differently. Since having kids my sleep is much more like a control knob - I can go more days without it before needing a recharge.
If you are a highly skilled technologist you will not have any issue finding a new job. If you are greatly bothered by the changes at Twitter and the new ownership it is almost certainly for the best that you leave and do something else. I don't see why someone skilled enough to work at Twitter would desperately hang on working for someone you can't stand to try and get some severance. Life isn't fair and this is the free market, and you are earning Big Buck$, dust off the resume and join a new company. Life is too short to live like that.
All sides of the political spectrum do this but it’s hilarious to me the “The 1950’s were amazing and we had high income taxes!” and ignore all the other things - like the entire world was bombed to shit and the seeds of stagflation were planted then.
Oh man remember when Meta / Facebook was a monopoly and we had to do everything in our power to stop them? And now their stock is down 75% in the last 12 months and they are getting beaten up by competitors? And without any government intervention! It's almost like the world is always dynamic and who is on top today isn't on top tomorrow...
Realizing no one is going to make your life better. Everyone is dealing with their own stuff and waiting on anyone else to do things for you is a poor life strategy. You have to take control of your own life and stop blaming others for your problems. Life is long and there is plenty of time to work on yourself - living as a miserable person full of hatred, jealousy, and regret is terrible. You need to have an optimistic attitude and make changes every single day to improve your situation.
I'll take a standardized test over arbitrary grades any day. Grades are far, far easier to game in so many ways (switch to an easier major!) than the SAT. Just ask anyone gunning for med school or law school - they will opt for the easier class over the harder one if it means their GPA has less risk of dropping.
There’s a range you can improve on. If you are an idiot you don’t have a chance of improving that much, but mommy and daddy can buy you a 4.0 at a private school. Can’t bribe your way to a 1600 SAT anywhere near as easily as the private school game can be played. And this is another reason why I like SATs over grades - the poor can get a leg up over the rich.
SAT / ACT are basically IQ tests. Grades are far more fuzzy but generally show an ability to stick with something over the long term and execute on projects.
I think both are important to being successful. Ignoring one for the other is probably bad. That said I prefer IQ over grades.
Strange I’ve never worked for unionized workplaces, from retail and fast food to high tech, and they were wonderful places to work with happy coworkers. It’s almost like your vision of a miserable capitalist hell hole is a fantasy, while socialist places like Europe are declining in living standards.
The only issue I’ve had is randomly the trackpad will stop working, then I reboot. I think I also made a few tweaks a while ago to some config for them. Otherwise, top notch machine.
Business and commerce are emergent phenomena and they would exist without the state “allowing” me to organize freely with other people for financial gain.
Property rights are the foundation of civilization. Please - go start your own commune as so many fantasists have and see how well it goes. I prefer to own my own stuff and keep thieves from taking it.
I live in Boston, which is a similar size and population to SF, and it's extremely safe. There is some crime but even something minor like porch pirates are pretty much not a thing. There is a skid row named "Mass and Cass" which has had HBO documentaries made about it, but there are a lot of protests from citizens advocating to clean it up.
At some point you need the police to arrest all these people and throw them in jail. Even a few weeks behind bars can drastically improve behavior among a population used to zero consequences for theft and violence.
I've found official stats to be a lagging indicator of anecdata, and my anecdata shows a lot of people moving away. If I owned an expensive condo there I'd sell ASAP.
Why should me, as the owner, be unable to fire people trying to unionize? If someone doesn't like a job they can leave. The union is anti-freedom - it restricts what I am able to do with my property (my business).
That isn't "freedom" - that's coercion. If you want to bargain collectively, go ahead. But in a free country I would be able to fire all of you and replace you immediately.
