seemaze··on Does Speaking to Agents Like Cavemen Save 65% of Tokens? We Test
Isn’t spoken language in general and English in particular famously 50% redundant? Does that not provide the same (if not more) benefit to the model when narrowing the scope of intent?
seemaze··on The lost civic life of movie rental stores
Be kind, rewind.
seemaze··on How to Mount a Balcony Awning (2025)
A quick tip: with more than (3) anchor points, make your anchor positions non-planar. This imparts a constant curvature and thus constant tension on the membrane and goes a long way to stabilize its position in moderate to heavy winds. Or less flapping.
seemaze··on How old is Ann?
That's pretty much how I approached it;

                   A1 M1

seemaze··on Gpiozero Flow
It's a good onramp to building a programmatic intuition, but you're correct that it very quickly gets left behind once the 'magic' is understood. If you do a quick image search for , e.g. Rhino3D Grasshopper, Blender Geometry Nodes, Vectorworks Marionette, Autodesk Dynamo, ComfyUI, you'll quickly see the implementations of the real world procedures users are crafting become unwieldy rather fast.

I can't tell you why an 80 column wall of characters is easier to reason about than a visual graph, but I assume it has something to do with the reason Mitch Hedberg does not like arrows[0]; look, a function.. let's got that way.

seemaze··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
Are there any productive tools or workflows you employ for modeling directly in VR? Or is it more useful for review and evaluation of models developed on traditional workstations?

I'm AEC adjacent and am trying to talk myself into picking up a pair strictly for personal architectural projects..

seemaze··on The coolest use for the Vision Pro
Do you find the value of VR/AR to be in the communication of design intent to clients unfamiliar with traditional 2D representations, or do your designers leverage VR/AR during the design development process as well?
seemaze··on Securing Services with Rootless Containers
The '--userns=auto' argument is a useful isolation method in both rootless and rootful Podman containers. This allows rootful Podman to orchestrate privileged capabilities while running the container processes in an unprivileged namespace.

seemaze··on We Tested Nonstick Cookware: Coatings Don't Need to Look Worn to Shed Particles
Yuck, get some cast iron. At yard sale if necessary, their useful lifetimes are measured in (human) generations.

Chris young has a great comparison of the physical differences between various metals used in pans. [0]. Maybe if you're on the right side of the AI bubble, you could spring for a solid silver version[1]

seemaze··on Turn And Face The Strange
Macs let you disable suspend just like (or possibly better) than any other operating system. The point being made is that it's the wrong tool for the job, precisely because of the user desired compromises made to create a great mobile computer.

seemaze··on Nvidia DGX Spark as a daily driver
AMD Strix Halo was half the price at launch, same 128GB unified memory and nearly identical memory bandwidth. It is x86, so run whichever OS your heart desires.

You give up 200GB networking, but anyone 'daily driving' one of these things are probably not needing to cluster multiples of them at high speed..

I use bitwarden[0]. It covers all cases and devices in question.

As a bonus, I self host using the open source vaultwarden[1] server implementation, which is packaged in alpine linux.

seemaze··on Corners Don't Look Like That: Regarding Screenspace Ambient Occlusion (2012)
In 20 years of archviz, I've only encountered ambient occlusion as a shortcut to save on compute; such as real-time viewport effects or to constrain resources on large render jobs. I've never heard anyone argue that it was physically realistic, realism was always the domain of ray tracing.

seemaze··on Canada's only watchmaking school still ticking after 80 years
Mechanical timepieces are a luxury item, and these students are essentially artists in training. Wrist time was solved in the late 1970's with the commoditization of quartz movements. These 'jobs' will get replaced by AI at approximately the same pace as your local sculptor.
seemaze··on AMD Ryzen AI Halo – $4k AI Dev Kit
I dropped a Framework mainboard in rack mount case and use it as a speedy low power x86 homelab as well as an inference server.

seemaze··on Q&A with Micron's VP and GM of Memory
What is Apples share across all memory delivered? How does that compare with the 40% of wafers locked up by OpenAI?

I don’t know the answer to either. On the surface I would estimate Apple a large, but not majority consumer overall.

seemaze··on Instead of banning AI, I made a classroom contract with my students
>This isn’t to say don’t follow passions or pursue things to a moderate extreme, just don’t ever let it consume you.

Just moderate your moderation! It’s turtles all the way down

seemaze··on Q&A with Micron's VP and GM of Memory
Explain how this works when their phones only capture roughly 20% market share, and their computers only 10%. That is to say nothing of the demand for server memory.

It seems like they only represent a fraction of the demand side, but wield an outsized influence over supply?

seemaze··on Meta caps internal AI token spending

seemaze··on Qwen 3.6 27B is the sweet spot for local development
I was interested to see that Qwen3.5-122B-A10B narrowly beat Qwen3.6-27B on Donato Capitella's SWEBench-verified-mini run with a similar 128GB UMA architecture.

seemaze··on US allows Anthropic to release Mythos to 'trusted partners'
Having an a collective economy governed by the “free market” is like having a pile of stones governed by gravity. There exists a primary directive force, but if you want to construct a cathedral or a bomb shelter, you need to impose some constraints, lest you revert to the angle of repose.
