I can highly recommend the documentary Mel Brooks: The 99 Year Old Man! What a legend, what a life.

If you can't get enough of Mel Brooks I'll also recommend the 2022 documentary: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Automat

Wow I had no idea he was that old. And only a few years ago he was trying to get a spaceballs sequel greenlit (and I believe he unfortunately failed). Kudos to him!

Well I have good news for you. It’s in production, there’s a teaser and release date.

and he's in it!

Thanks! I didn't catch that part so I thought it didn't happen.

Spaceballs: The New One is scheduled to be released by Amazon MGM on April 23, 2027 [0]

Ohhh thanks I didn't realise it had succeeded. Thanks!

And they got Rick Moranis out of retirement to reprise his role as Dark Helmet, which is just delightful. I hope we see more of him in movies now that his children are grown.

unshrunk

its coming! josh gad pitched him an idea for it and got it up and running

Two days ago I was in Hamburg on a conference, where I visited the Miniature Wonderland. One of rooms has a miniature 'functioning' airport with planes taxiing etc. In one place near the hangars I noticed a small RV with wings with a small figure fueling it presumably.

I immediately knew I knew it from somewhere, but couldn't figure it out - only after about 20 minutes it hit me - Spaceballs!

Good thing Attenborough got there first so Mel can still play with lego's. I hope there is a reference in the new Space Balls for that. Such a funny little quirk.

Hope for the best, expect the worst. Some drink champagne, some die of thirst. No way of knowing which ways it's going...hope for the best, expect the worst

Happy birthday, Mr. Brooks.

That movie is so fun and intelligent and heartfelt, pure Mel Brooks genius

Growing up we watched Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and Silent Movie almost every week. Happy birthday Mel, thanks for all laughs and grotesque which shaped us.

"The funniest man who ever lived?" - I beg to differ.

That is Rik Mayall. Also, the sexiest.

Pity Rik didn't make it to 100 though. Would have loved to have seen another Bottom or two ..

I loved his "Silent Movie" - saw it twice on the same day that it came out with two different batches of friends.

We watched the Australian Episode of Everybody Feed Phil, and Mel Brooks made an appearance. He seemed a bit old but when I looked him up on Wikipedia I was shocked to learn he was 99. Still working, still funny, what a life.

I have to rewatch Robin Hood: Men in Tights in his honor.

It's good to be the king.

He's such an interestin guy, all his movies are extermely low budget. For example, he filmed part of The Princess Bride on a golf course, and at one point you an see the pin in the background. In the next scene, one of Humperdinck's knights is holding that very pin flag. I can't find mention of this anywhere other than my own posts about it lol but there are other easter eggs too.

You seem not to realise that Brooks did not write or direct The Princess Bride and as far as I know has no role connected to the film.
