seemack··on Convoy Crackdown – power to freeze bank accounts without trial or legal recourse
Except it was?

They released an MOU at the start of this that explicitly called for the resignation of the current government if they were not willing to immediately lift the Covid19 mandates. In the case of a refusal to lift the mandates, it demanded that a new government be formed of representatives from the Senate and, incredibly, representatives from the convoy.

Ah I see what you were meaning now. I agree, while we could say zero violence in a perfect world, we know that is it rife with conflicting interpretations in the real world.

I agree with the leaders endorsing violence being a clear market for an unacceptable protest.

Beyond that, I would probably leave it to some authority like a judge. They could make the call based on number/severity of incidents, etc.

That's it. We've successfully answered the question of if it is a peaceful protest.

Great point. It's actually more equivalent than I thought.

The vaccine reduces the amount of hospitalizations necessary to treat COVID infections which means we don't overrun our hospitals.

Much in the same way that the hospitals would be overrun if everyone was driving drunk and sending a high number of people to the hospital via car accidents.

Thanks for that!

Accepting your premise that it's being forced on us, how is this different from the many other laws we are "forced" to obey as a part of Canadian society?
seemack··on Florida governor to investigate GoFundMe over Canada trucker donations
Are you also against the other laws that we have governing our behaviour as a collective society? For instance, you are "coerced" into driving your vehicle within a certain measure of sobriety.
seemack··on Florida governor to investigate GoFundMe over Canada trucker donations
Isn't it exactly that then? You were shoved into a snowbank once and put this forward as an example of people not being peaceful.

Unsuspecting and uninvolved people are being shoved by protesters. Therefore, this is not a peaceful protest.

I live in Ottawa. This is not simply unpleasant noise that the residents downtown are being forced to live through. This is a large number of transport trucks and various general trucks blowing their horns throughout the day and night. There are multiple trucks driving around with train horns which are extremely loud. A lawsuit has been filed against this tactic being used by the protesters (https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/class-action-suit-...)

Nor is it limited to auditory harassment. Some examples: - Convoy protesters harass local shelter for free food. It's not that big a stretch to characterize this as stealing from the homeless since that's specifically who the food is meant for. https://twitter.com/sghottawa/status/1487854425368633344

- Rocks thrown at ambulance as well as anti-asian slurs towards the paramedic https://ottawa.citynews.ca/local-news/rocks-hurled-at-ottawa...

Downtown mall forced to close as protesters enter and refuse to wear masks - https://ottawacitizen.com/news/local-news/rideau-centre-clos...

I personally know people who have been verbally intimidated for wearing a mask, one who was screamed at and pushed to the ground for wearing a mask, and another who was threatened with rape as she walked into her place of work.

A number of businesses have closed for the weekend due to safety concerns and have subsequently been brigaded with negative comment and reviews on their google listings.

Of course, you can make the claim that the participants are not actually protesters but could be false flag, paid actors, antifa or whatever. I personally think that's reaching. I've lived here for many years, seeing many large protests come and go, and I've never seen such an influx of hateful incidents.

I fully agree with their right to protest and sympathize with some of their complaints but these tactics are in no way acceptable or peaceful. People need rest and these protesters are denying this to a huge amount of people. People should feel safe walking through the streets of their city and people absolutely do not feel safe walking close to the protests because of the many examples of harassment.

Apologies for the length of the reply but, as you can imagine, it's very disappointing to see these events minimized.

seemack··on Trying to open an S.F. ice cream shop, was no match for city bureaucracy
You still have to submit detailed plans to the city for your commercial space. An architect is best able to help here as they are familiar with the building code, permitting process, etc.

They can also help account for things the prospective ice cream shop owner isn't aware of. For example, regulations around hand-washing stations for food-based businesses.

I happen have an ice cream shop and we used an architect. Their experience designing other retail locations was very helpful.

seemack··on On Apple's Piss-Poor Documentation
I get the mindset and am very much a read-the-code person as well but my go-to example for this kind of thinking is that reading the code in lieu of a written summary/guide, etc is like trying to understand a book where the chapters and paragraphs are mixed around. It's possible and the ability to do so worthy of pride but it's clear that a succinct summary in one place would be far easier and time-efficient.

Not to say that heavy documentation like this is perfect of course. It just seems like the complexity of the read-the-code solution is sometimes glossed over.

> Right. His dictatorship is so wobbly that he made himself emperor. Which is it?

Are you are being deliberately obtuse?

It's entirely reasonable that his strength and stability could change from "strong" enough to remove his term limits to "wobbly". Or it could have fluctuated towards even stronger. It doesn't matter, the point is that stability is not a constant so your objection doesn't really make sense.

The jobs associated with planning and building are clearly a positive in an absolute sense. The counter-point is this positive aspect is very much outweighed by the negative aspects. The housing supply for people who actually need somewhere to live is being limited which drives up the housing prices and rental rates.

Re-reading your comment, it feels like you've missed the point that these units are largely not being made available to the housing market.

Anyone familiar with zerohedge?

I'm not going to make any real judgements but they certainly don't make a good first impression. They repeatedly claim that they reported this a day earlier than FT but don't even provide a link to this supposed report, spelling mistakes throughout...

They do make it more tempting to pay for FT though!

I've been back on my windows machine recently for a new side project and, ironically, I've really enjoyed this feature.

It's akin to shaking my head before focusing on a specific task. I shake the task window and the other applications that I still want open but won't be using for a bit all hide away.

I don't follow this. Why would they have to implement alternative payment methods in the stpre? An app can create their own payment method within the app itself.

> ...sets the unfortunate precedent that a country could leverage its monopolistic position in tech to stifle competition.

Isn't that exactly what the Chinese laws do? Everything I've read seems to say that they prevent foreign companies from being able to fairly compete against local Chinese. companies.

seemack··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
I apparently don't follow the news on what they've been doing to Chinese companies. Do you have any links so that I can learn more?
seemack··on US to ban transactions with ByteDance and WeChat in 45 days
Saying that the US companies chose not to obey China laws, etc is simplifying the situation dramatically in favour of China. In this case, don't the Chinese laws include a requirement for a Chinese "partner" company and obligations towards IP transfer? These requirements don't sound like a fair arrangement to me and, as far as I know, there are no comparable requirements in the US on foreign companies.

Can you clarify what you mean by "lesser society"?

seemack··on Git Repo of Police Brutality During the 2020 George Floyd Protests
You seem to be misconstruing people's condemnation of the police use of force. The condemnation is due to the police not responding with force appropriately.

My interpretation is that the majority of people are simply responding to the trend of police responding with extreme violence more and more readily in situations which absolutely do not require it.

It was important because there were specific job requirements that had to be met in order to qualify for a TN visa. The expertise you were expected to be bringing in as a Software Engineer was architectural level knowledge of coding.

The TN visa could be revoked at any time which is why you want to be really clear when crossing the border. I worked for Microsoft and they recommended that I bring my full job description package and lawyer's letter every time I crossed the border

The best part was when I had to go to the border to apply for the TN visa. The poor guy had a list of questions to ask and clearly had no idea what any of it meant. "And will you be doing any <...long, dramatic pause> programming?"

I had a similar issue where I bought a pair of in-ear monitors with very low impedance and the lowest settings on my phone/laptop is still too loud. I solved it buying a small headphone amp: https://www.radsone.com/earstudio

It's worked out really well. It's much smaller than most headphone amps and has the added bonus (for me) of making my headphones wireless.
