seedie··on Show HN: TattoosAI – AI-powered tattoo artist, using Stable Diffusion
Kudos for the idea and putting the service together. In practice I wouldn't let my tattoo artist ink myself if they couldn't come up with sketches like the ones on the explore designs page.

But then I'm not a tattoo artist and maybe thats exactly the extra bit creativity an artist sometime wants/needs

seedie··on Useless Use of "dd" (2015)
386BSD the predecessor of Net/Free/OpenBSD was published under a BSD license in 1992. 6 months after Linus posted his kernel sources on usenet. It was free and open source and no later than the "free" BSDs that are still available today. I'd say that is a reason why it is successful.

Edit: "free" in quotatio marks to not confuse with FreeBSD.

seedie··on Ask HN: How do you manage – and remember to manage – your to-do list in 2022?
To be honest, most of the time I lack the discipline to track my tasks in a tool. But what came closest to being useful for me is Super Productivity[0]. It's MIT licensed, can be integrated with Jira, GitHub, Gitlab and Open Project and has a built in Pomodoro Timer that helps me to find focus.

I remember Astaro did this with their Astaro Security Gateway UTM solution. Provide a full featured software appliance for home users and hope the admins are so caught up that they don't want to change to another vendor at work. Astaro got acquired by Sophos in 2011 but I just checked, they still offer the Sophos UTM Gateway in a Home edition.

seedie··on SMTP protocol basics from scratch in Go: receiving email from Gmail
I've no argument beyond that. You're right.
seedie··on SMTP protocol basics from scratch in Go: receiving email from Gmail
I guess the argument for inbound blocking is that its way too easy to configure an open relay which is then used to send spam.
seedie··on A guide to building Lego Classic Town cars
Thats why I (uhm my kids) really enjoy the Creator 3 in 1 sets. All shiny and new but still the build it up, tear it down and build it up again mindset. Showcasing 3 sometimes very different models.

An interesting question is how the salaries would shift. If everyone can fulfil basic needs without much, will the jobs that no ones interested in doing be the ones on a high pay grade?

edit: just saw that you replied to "maybe money isn't needed at all" so my reply is not really relevant

seedie··on Magic Wormhole: Get things from one computer to another, safely
When you don't have a direct connection to the sending/receiving ends. Magic Wormhole and croc use Relays for that. And if you want to transfer files to systems without sshd installed and configured.

It's fascinating how you can do this job for decades and learn about new tools daily. And I mean tools that are here for ages.

seedie··on Do-It-Yourself Book Press (2006)
The "Buy the book (EU)" link is broken. Only Had a quick glimpse on Decrypting Rita and Parallax, but wow what a ride and the colors!
seedie··on Show HN: I built the antithesis of Zoom. Add GIFs, stickers, BGs. Talk like IRL
Couldn't agreed more. After seeing the first "Video conferencing" tool with spatial audio I was so excited. This excitement got lost instantly when we had our first online christmas party. Being able to hear everyone clearly and loud is not a bug its a feature.

IRL I can change my focus on someone further away without moving at all. Only if Im really interested in that other conversation I will start moving.

A pre-listen feature on mouse over would be awesome.

While I'm still fascinated by the technical aspects imho theres still a lot of room for improvement in the implementation. But its great that there are so many projects tackling this problem and improving online get-togethers

seedie··on Open Source does not mean “Includes Free Support”
If you see your open source project as your personal project and you don't want to spend time on it make it explicit in your README. Community projects usually are more than happy to receive bug reports because they want to build the best software they can. If you want to build a community project being friendly works wonders.

How ist one able to distinguish one from the other if not from the README.

seedie··on Show HN: I made a site where you practice typing by retyping entire novels
If you introduce that feature please make it optional. I love the idea of typing novels to get a more intense connection to the content. Gameification for WPM would disrupt this. Please consider this use case even though I understand that this ist not your target audience.

Great Work!

seedie··on Why some people suffer from a stutter
About 5 to 10% of kids, according to [0] begin to stutter temporarly. My little one started to stutter when she was 3 and after a few days nearly stopped talking altogether because she rather did not speak than stutter, to see this hurt badly. Before that she was actively communicating and joking with us. We felt like we lost a deep connection to her feelings, her emotions, like we lost her. I called a speech therapists and they told me that kids can start to stutter as they develop their language skills and they only start therapy if the stuttering goes on for more than a few months. We had some hard weeks while trying to follow the tips in [1] but luckily it went away. Seeing that she decided not to talk anymore, the effect that stuttering had on her, opened my eyes on what it might mean for someone who suffers from stuttering. All the best for everyone whose affected!

seedie··on How many pieces can a puzzle have?
Don't know if this is originally japanese, but we have some puzzles like that in germany. One we have at home has a frame background image different to the puzzle motive. Adding visual disturbance. My kids seemed not to be disturbed as much by it than their parents in the first try

seedie··on Digital surveillance technologies to fight pandemic must respect human rights
When you say cannot actually help fight the pandemic do you have any reason to believe they won't work from a scientific point of view?

Sorry if I have missed it, but to me your arguments were privacy issues and the technical difficulties (different platforms, Support) to get an app on enough smartphones to reach the critical number of participants. Don't get me wrong I totally agree, these are things that we first need to find a solution. But your post sounded to me like you have the opinion that contact tracing doesn't work.
