secstate··on Bluesky announces data federation for self hosters
But that's sort of why Bluesky is not really decentralized, just federated. It's a pretty significant difference. Mastodon is federated and decentralized. Twitter is non-federated and centralized. Bluesky is trying to be the federated, centralized option.

Whether that works, we'll see. I for one just gave up social media about 8 years ago and, while feeling like I'm missing something flares up from time to time, it's nothing like the disaster my online life was before I gave it up. It wasn't a problem of missing federation or not being centralized. It was inherent to the way social media functions against my person.

secstate··on Renting your music means accepting that it will disappear
I've found most Amazon downloads to be 320k and, while the audiophile will argue, hard to distinguish from FLAC. Most importantly, it's higher quality than the EP I have on magnetic tape that was a recording of a recording I bought at the Fireside Bowl in 1999. Boy, I enjoyed listening to that, and the 320k MP3s do just fine so long as I don't need to re-encode them anytime soon.
secstate··on I bought the Apple Vision Pro and even though the tech is amazing I returned it
Realize that AND acknowledge that it's been three years, and the tech has failed to take off, especially the way phones have. This could still be a V1 iPod or V1 iPhone thing, but between these initial responses, the history of the market and (the biggest) a missing Steve Jobs to do his Steve Jobs thing on it, I'm just not buying it. Cook is his own brand of genius, but they haven't disrupted much since Jobs passed on.
secstate··on Paris Vote Targets SUV Drivers with Parking Fees Set to Triple
I wish I could double your karma. This comment represents the pinnacle of thought around vehicle styles and how unsound logic and manipulative sociology can create net harm in capitalist economies. Everything about modern American trucks and SUVs makes me want to vomit when I thino about it too hard.
secstate··on Paris Vote Targets SUV Drivers with Parking Fees Set to Triple
A minivan allows much easier ingress, egress with large doors. Also, there are no SUVs with 8 seats that I know of. There are minivans with AWD or even limited 4WD. But they definitely carry social stigma and don't look sporty. That's important for a lot of people, I guess.

Also, wheel base and weight are not the best way to compare overall utility of a vehicle.

secstate··on Five richest men double their money as poorest get poorer
Largely because most modern capitalist societies have at least half-implemented many of things Marx proposed. We don't live in a world where we can know whether Western European capitalism of the industrial revolution proceeded monotonically and so have not basis for objectivity for a conclusion that Marx was wrong.

secstate··on Starlink launches "cellphone towers in space" for use with LTE phones
I found out recently Switzerland doesn't use European SIM cards. Had WiFi in the rental, but as soon as we started walking around Luzern we were text message only. The experience was kind of like turning off the TV that's on all the time. Everything got quiet and I became more aware of the people I was with. I guess I can just turn my phone off, or turn data off, but so long as I have to WANT to do it, I wont. And that's maybe as human a conclusion I can draw. Candle light and wood smoke still exist, but unless we're kinda forced towards them, we'll always go towards the bright lights and warmer rooms.
secstate··on Read fewer books and feel better about it
It's totally okay to read a full plot synopsis of any fiction worth reading. Honestly, if a story is ruined by knowing whats going to happen (baring murder mysteries, which are their own animal), it's probably not worth reading. Re-reading is one of the things I most look forward to. There are even some books I re-read at the same time every year (just started my annual re-read of The Moon is a Harsh Mistress)!
secstate··on Amazon's Silent Sacking
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Claudius_Gothicus who's reign was pretty late in the Empire phase, though good news for the U.S. it took another 150 years once they started crowning barbarians emperors before it all went to shit. Ironically, it was the emperors from barbarian territory who led the effort to keep second class and first class from mixing; which also rings a little true in our current U.S. political climate.
secstate··on Amazon's Silent Sacking
Old story retold. The Claudian Roman government doubled down on the distinction between barbarian and Roman civilian and used shitty rhetorical tools to denigrate the barbarians. This all despite the fact that most Romans farms and undesirable jobs were still being done by "barbarians." It's almost like looking into a mirror of history. The end for Rome was not far beyond Claudius.
secstate··on So I Quit Spotify
Same here. I adopted this behavior after reflecting on how I experienced music in high school with my sister. We'd have the CD or two in the car for trips to school and then maybe a dozen at home that we'd cycle through. I'm still not 100% sure it's the best way to enjoy music, but I feel myself less distracted by looking for something new all the time, so that's gotta count for something, right?

Plus, with my own library, I get to use mopidy + snapcast to synchronize streaming through the house and it's a special kind of magic.

secstate··on Women builds tunnel system under her house
Not totally sure, but the bit about the water makes it sound like a storm shelter, which is a totally valid thing to build under your house in certain places.
secstate··on What I wish someone had told me
I mean, the startup world is not literally a lottery. But any post by sama about what it takes to succeed most definitely should start with a disclaimer about survivorship bias.
secstate··on Amazon exec: it's time to 'disagree and commit' to office return despite no data
Disappointed this was downvoted initially, you got my +1. Corporate reality in 2023 is creeping ever closer to a Weyland-Yutani plutocratic government where "market forces" are unable to put a dent in shitty corporate behavior.

I have to fly Delta home. They cancelled my connecting flight, moved it to a day later and say "sorry, you can sleep at JFK!" The next time I fly, I've got 1/3 odds Delta will be the only one flying where I need to go.

Rinse and repeat for online merchants. This will have ZERO effect on Amazon's ability to function because employees have ZERO clout in management meetings.

secstate··on Ask HN: How to delete all Google photos so that I don't lose access to Gmail?
I appreciate it's not for everyone, but the mailinabox.email script collections makes it surprisingly painless. The world needs more people to put some effort into things, otherwise we'll get the future we tried for, and that's looking increasingly like a Ridley Scott sci-fi movie.
secstate··on If 95% doesn't count as a vote of no confidence, what number would?
Corporate history of the 20th and 21st centuries would strongly suggest that the power of corporations actively does NOT stem from the consent of the employees.

There are no governed here, especially in a right-to-work culture. Saying people vote for who they want to work for because they can vote with their feet is a bit like saying if you don't like your dictator, just move out of Venezuela. Reality is significantly more complicated than that.

secstate··on Motorized Ox Carts
Oh wow, the Lamp on HN? And Peter Hitchens no less. I don't even know how I found myself reading this the other day, but my take away then was it felt like ramblings of an old man wishing the world had technologized "better." Though because Hitchens is a pretty skilled writer, the better part is subtle and it mostly ends up couched as "different". But all in all I was left unimpressed.

Though I did learn about slip coaches, which sounded neat, though pretty clearly fundamentally flawed.

secstate··on Starship Integrated Flight Test 2 at 7 Am Central Time
I'm not totally sure Space X cares what the rest of the industry thinks. This is next-level space engineering compared to what's come before. Who's opinions are we concerned about? ULA? Arianespace? Those companies can't even blow up a space craft successfully because they can't launch them (see, SLS, Ariane 6).
secstate··on Melatonin use soars among children, with unknown risks
Just tossing ideas out, but is it possible that structured mornings as a result of modern education might be part of why melatonin is used so often? Being generally a night owl, I slept like shit all through high school and parts of college. I'm just a sample size of one, but if instead of just "dealing" with it, I had looked for a solution to help me get to sleep faster, maybe I (or my parents) would have leaned on melatonin? I certainly had friends that couldn't sleep without nyquil in high school, too.

EDIT: To add another thought, I also had the blessing/good luck of a father who, noticing my difficulties getting to sleep gave me the sage advice of "don't worry about it. Grab a book, do some drawing, worst case scenario, you don't get up for school tomorrow. The world is not ending." How much stress to do we put on ourselves by our expectation of sleep and the perceived consequences of having a bad day the next day. Our life does not operate via step functions. It is continuous, and no one bad day can ruin the next unless you let it.

secstate··on Airbnb Is Different Now
Two hotels rooms often runs way more than renting an entire house on AirBNB. Hotels vs Rentals by owner seems like a hot take designed to show what sort of traveller you are. When.it was just me and my partner hotels were great. Drop your bag, run for the door, come back to sleep. Kids struggle doing 10 hours of on your feet time, which invariably means you'll be back at your acomodations for some decent chunk of the trip. Is that better or worse, hell if I know, but I love travelling with my kids, so I'ma do it no matter what concessions I have to make. And one of those is rentals-by-owner.

The other reality is that in most regions there's only a handful of truly dangerous fungus groups with look-alikes that, while edible, are not particularly choice. And the really delicious fungus often have look alikes that are not delicious and may cause GI issues, but wont kill you.

So while all of this should come with a warning to talk with others and do research, it's not impossible to learn what's edible and enjoy foraging. The internet is great at making us afraid of the outdoors. But you just need to take a few precautions if you do eat fungus such as picking one person in your group with a solid GI system to eat a tiny bit and wait 24-48 hours. If they're good, make a note in your journal, take some detailed photos and try eating it again.

Some of the best eating I've ever done was sauteed butter-footed boletes in an omelet.

secstate··on Apple reports third quarter results
I understand that few people use F-Droid and similar alternative app stores, but for those of us who do, it is the single biggest reason why Apple gets singled out. F-Droid still exists. I can still homebrew Android apps and run them.

Would I prefer if there was a truly FOSS mobile operating system? Yes. But life is what it is and I'll take the /option/ to use F-Droid over only having the App Store any day.

secstate··on Ask HN: Which distro do you use? (2023)
It's maybe not exactly what you asked for, but I use EndeavourOS, which basically provides a calamari installer experience for Arch, and installs yay by default. It's not really "hardened" anymore than having firewalld on by default, but it definitely makes it easier to setup Arch on an encrypted volume.

Also, if you wanted hardened, best to stick with OpenBSD or it's ilk. Linux tends not to be hardened easily, and usually severely limits functionality when you do start hardening it (i.e. BlackArch or Parrot).

secstate··on How I changed my D-Link camera to a locally managed IP camera
I just use generic USB cameras (pick your quality) and stream over HTTP with MJPEG using ustreamer. Works surprisingly well, but you have to implement all the processing and storage yourself. All you get is a screenshot URL and a streaming URL.
secstate··on ‘His ideas resonate’: how the Unabomber’s dangerous anti-tech manifesto lives on
... and is unlikely to ever create one, either. First principles assume ability to understand. I'm not sure humans understand (or have the ability to understand in the future) emerging behavior in groups of humans. And the hubris to believe we can often results in violence because it's one of the simpler AND effective ways to make someone do what you think they should do.
