Why not pay a notary to store your will or a bank safe ?

I mean you re inventing solutions to problems we always solved with a fee and a legally binding contract...

secondaryacct··on Programming in 1987 versus Today
They had it easy being paid to sum a few numbers and call it a banking application :D
secondaryacct··on Ask HN: Why shouldn't I take advantage of the Crypto/NFT craze?
You can take advantage of it ofc, but be careful not to be taken advantage of, like everything: do not buy coins, buy stocks of crypto companies, do not get employed by a crypto company but provide consultancy to them etc.

When it fails, you'll be happy to have less eggs in their basket.

secondaryacct··on Real Problems That Web3 Solves, Part 1
Freeing users from regulated banks and taxes is a way to make money fast. It s never been the goal of bitcoin to provide any utility to businesses (insured loans, public offering, leverage financing, future contracts, merger consulting, asset management, wealth optimization).

And if they cant do what banks already provide, what sort of "freedom" do they offer ? The ability not to have a retail account, the low hanging fruit of banking ?

This BS kneejerk 2008 crisis reaction Satoshi pretend to have had at the time, made him both one of the richest financial force in the world and the biggest financial risk (if he sells for some random reason just one btc from a genesis wallet of 1M BTC, what do you think will happen?). He became Maddoff...

secondaryacct··on No Way to Grow Up
And what harms a child more, in a rational compromising world: part of the family dead or losing revenue due to hard sickness, or staying away from school for a while?

This writer may not have children, im terrified to leave my toddler behind, am I selfish? What is this fake dichotomy...

secondaryacct··on Faster IndexOf for Substrings in .NET
You can use it but maybe I didnt explain that I work mainly in performance optimization of heavy trading applications in electronic trading for a tier 1 investment bank.

No I cant explain why we wont finance a gigantic team to redo it all, but anyway: we need this to go faster, and I wish MS would fix WinForms to make them transparently faster rather than me profiling with despair "yes hum modals will always be a bit slow to redraw 50 controls, we could port to the new stuff but we're not sure it ll get better (but at least we ll benefit from more framework level optim) and it's so different we need a new guy" "then find a new guy", im told, and then every new guy who did some low latency GUI at our level (our app is very optimized but China will decuple volume eventually so...) will tell me he desperately wants out to move to java backend where all the fun is... which I cant deny since that s where I got extracted from urgently when half the .NET team left out of despair to go do Java in other banks lol.

I even grew to like .NET even if Ill never wrap my head around the build process and dependency management. Just a wish that MS would continue to optimize winform somehow so I wouldnt have to recode forms doing exactly the same thing. I suppose it s nonsensical since the new paradigm IS the optim but one can whine :D

secondaryacct··on Faster IndexOf for Substrings in .NET
As a new joiner from Java on applications that are decades old, I wish it would be more backward compatible.

I cant forgive they didnt find a way to fix WinForms, that we cant find the budget to move away from and limp along trying to upgrade out of.

But at least unlike Java, their GUIs do work well enough for a fraction of the maintenance cost of what I know. So meh, begging the sky to find anyone willing to do .NET in 2022 so I can go back to my cave lol. All the OG experts we interview are interested by our path to Java because they want out and Im like "but dude we'll teach you Java but we really need someone who has a clue in C#/.NET and likes it" :s

secondaryacct··on Inclusive IT Language Guide [pdf]
We kill processes, destroy variables, put objects in blacklist, push to a master branch, are we monster ?

Meanwhile in my language, every word has a gender, from table to banana, should I then be triggered by gender neutrality, a concept that "destroy my gender-heavy culture"? :D

Singular they is fine when you dont know the gender, it's true it's weird to favor masculine, or what I see in English favoring feminine. But putting your fav gender in email signature is a bit like... is it truly such a massive problem that everyone must comply and not just people for whom it's not clear ? Im not saying it s not a problem, just is it that massive ?

OMG wait until people realize it.
secondaryacct··on Inclusive IT Language Guide [pdf]
Yeah but the Académie is really just consultative. I will still never say mot-dièse for hashtag.

And that master thing is really stupid, like every population has been enslaved at some point, the word comes from the romans, and it's not like anyone is promoting slavery by saying their master branch dominate their slave branches in git. We also still enslave animals and we can say "human friend" instead of "master" to indicate your relationship with your dog, you're still not asking him for tax advices.

And should we stop saying Maitresse for kids' teachers as well to avoid remiding everyone of slavery...

secondaryacct··on Inclusive IT Language Guide [pdf]
You cant see in it because there's no light ? Maybe some crude analogy to the first cameras dark chambers ? French wikipedia says it entered our language during WWII to describe enemy military strategies we had to analyze by interacting with them rather than reverse engineer from specs. Black is the color of the night and mystery, white of the sun and openness. I find it insane this is misinterpreted as good/bad, with the mystery color being bad.

We're fighting hard in my company against the same people as usual now brigadding to stop saying black/whitelist, because it does nothing to help black people in America (we're in Asia), who suffer from problems which go well beyond even white people: they entered a cycle of self defeatism where every problem has an external source and therefore solution, to the point of complete apathy.

So when a chinese says "this system is a blackbox" I will not, me a European, tell him to say something else because americans cant fix their shit and now need to pretend me and that chinese guys are part of their problem. It's THEIR problem, they fix it, and for real.

But then you must charge all the employees who did so, instead of her. Her crime is fraud because she told investor one thing and commanded employees another.

But it's not the army, they could refuse, they all did the tests and gave the false results back to humans, which is unfathomable in healthcare. She s eventually responsible but her job was on investor relationship.

secondaryacct··on In 1953 a telco executive predicts the rise of smartphones and video calls
One word: frictionless. Zoom is by far the easiest thing to onboard for a random person. My mom struggled to understand Skype account creation wall.

I work in a megacorp that forbade Zoom to the profit of our already well established Skype and MS Team.

Fast forward to last week, a team of "digital innovation onboarding" claimed huge victory against our rotting process by finally getting Zoom approved... finally lol.

And the worst is I want Zoom too: easier to interview candidates, meet client and trainers, contact universities etc.

secondaryacct··on In 1953 a telco executive predicts the rise of smartphones and video calls
I remember my dad telling me one day we could see each other over the phone and finding this insanely cool. We imagined it as a sort of mini tv on top of the landline phone.

No one predicted me writing to you from an elevator in Hong Kong and having the speed of interaction under a few milliseconds. And now that I Skype my dad across the ocean, it seems like a very secondary and minor feature of the internet.

Whatsapp alone changed how we interact with far away family as if we never left.

secondaryacct··on Interview with CEO of Flexport: Supply chain crunch, modern logistics
So you buy less and less gas for your car as you hear CNN loop on gas price rising due to supply issue ?

Abd what about toys when everyone is talking about saving Christmas ? You'll make triple sure you have one, maybe even buy several from several sources.

I've seen myself do that with difficult to import goods, and price is always a lower factor than need. Price would eventually push me out, but there s a twilight zone when it's just right to panic buy stuff that werent supposed to be rare.

I dont know, I used to believe these more but now that I have a toddler telling everyone I give her french fries everyday when in fact I, from time to time, give her ONE of mine and then tell her she must eat her vegetables, I tend to consider child testimony as extremely dubious :D

You dont even need to implant anything, they may not even realize they lie.

secondaryacct··on Ask HN: Why is today's Internet experience so user hostile?
In Hong Kong it's simpler: 3-week hotel quarantine when you enter and no guarantee that if you leave your airline will be allowed back in.

I havent moved for the last 2 years and my daughter has grown her first years by seeing her grandparents on Skype. Im not risking what a friend lived through, stuck 6 months in Europe unable to come back.

New people entering these days do so without their family and with the clear understanding they re stuck here for a while. 0-case policy is not even working so well, since the last week we had an "explosive" cluster of 5 cases (so far) because a now fired freight airline employee went out sick everywhere ...

The only potential exit will be China, maybe, if they dont get scared by our recent uptick, if you like to install their gps-based tracking system. And you better not be foreign-looking and sick while in China, you're never coming back :D

The best story was when they still allowed exceptions for diplomatic staff and families and the kids of a Saudi official decided they were too good for self isolation and created a mini cluster isolating entire buildings for re-test. Or the Dubai IT guy who's now in jail after he forced the city to retest 800k philipinos helpers because he lied and contaminated some going to a party (and slowed down tracking since he lied to protect his friends from quarantine) before leaving his 1-week long (+short quarantine at the time, he's the reason we have 3 weeks now) vacation...

So your 100 euros wasted, Im not crying for them :p

secondaryacct··on Deserializing JSON Fast (2020)
This is false, I've optimized horrendously large json parsing by simply rotating the data in a table form and using a binary serializer/deserializer (c.js provided by kdb: https://github.com/KxSystems/kdb/blob/master/c/c.js ).

It's insanely faster to parse binary into js object without going through json at all than parsing string json, and we transformed a dumb application from slow death to "oh wow no need to optimize further, all perf problems are now fixed" simply by switching the serialization format (faster to download, faster to deserialize, faster to access).

It even helps the backend to serialize faster than writing enormous ASCII strings just to talk to the browser memory structure. Dont forget these json format are just better xml and still made for humans. Machines can work well with structures closer to the memory layout, for instance sending the header once and subsequent objects in ordered attributes with separator is closer to how an object is stored and accessed by JS.

I suppose a mistake we all make after years of JSON is thinking it represents objects for the browser but an object is always a byte array with an offset per attribute descriptor. So send the attribute descriptors and their type (which will describe a size too) first and then just fill.

secondaryacct··on Ask HN: Why don't most CS academics make novel video games?
This is like asking why talented video game programmers dont do more to advance compiler optimization since they re so good.

I suppose some people think software goes beyond entertaining video games.

Yes, ofc I meant the aggressivity would come after they invade Taiwan and transform it into a colony. My English is sometimes awkward but the British could have switched to French when we invaded them. Sadly we all learned the hard way France couldnt maintain... an "aggressive colony" in England either hehehe

As a half-related aside, I think the solution is what we eventually did with the EU, a mutually assured dependency that would force everyone to keep the peace we longed for millenia, and I think the British forgot a bit too fast the vain inter massacres our ancestors rushed into at each disagreement when they yelled for Brexit to give them back their "independence".

Wish China could see it but afraid they have to try every other stupid way first :( Praying for the British and us our fishing disagreements and submarines rifraf dont escalate. Could Taiwan compromise with a soft border economic Union called the Greater China Union that would make everyone cool down ? Meh.

secondaryacct··on 2021 Letter
I disagree with you on Hong Kong (I m now a voting citizen, for what it's worth - not much).

The problems in Hong Kong didnt start 2 years ago, they started when the UK came in, and we inherit a difficulty I know well where I come from (Europe, full of Corsica, Basque Country, Northern Ireland, Brittany, Catalonia and so on).

Beijing reacts like we all reacted 2 centuries ago, and will slowly learn to deal with it, especially if they invade Taiwan and have to stop killing because unlike Xinjiang there's nothing to mine there and only cost cost cost to maintain an aggressive colony that builds processors as only output of value.

I think the CCP is no more evil than Napoleon, and ask a Frenchman today and he'll rave about what he did that transformed eventually the country, at the cost of 200k+ young people's lives to invade Russia, if you can believe it.

Things progress and China has to experience it for themselves, sadly. There's no shortcuts that I know of for such a big place.

secondaryacct··on Coding error at Santander Bank put millions into random accounts on Christmas
From what I know of Santander systems I had the "pleasure" to interact with as a third party dev, it's probably a poor sob who triggered a method called "doTheRightThing" which ended up doing something completely different.

Only Citi has surprised me more than Santander when it comes to completely insane IT org (Citi spent 2 months on an automated export and when we went live after UAT, we realized they were not ready and had a monkey do the "automated export" manually, with completely wrong format and information, and they didnt feel the need to warn us when it happened at 11pm...)

The endless printing is more necessary than the strict stock control fot a currency. You cannot avoid people starving unless you do it, and you cannot live in peace unless you avoid people starving and getting desperate.

You do know there was no printing in the middle age. Good old days these all were.
