Love this Furies song. Great one for singing over a trad session in Dublin
secfirstmd··on Cisco Acquires Splunk
Yeah true. Pretty hard to figure out that accurately from open sources.
secfirstmd··on Cisco Acquires Splunk
Possibly. I guess you can't remove the idea that the information was found through some open means. For all we know the private jets of the Cisco leaders might have been in the same location as those from Splunk.

Anyone also used Synology Photos and able to compare it's functionality to this? Which is better?
secfirstmd··on Illegal trade in AI child sex abuse images exposed
You could do that with Photoshop already.

Blackmail as an intelligence recruitment technique, especially with something so fake, is really very limited in it's utility.

secfirstmd··on The best place to drink is the emptiest bar in the city
Yeah it's actually really surprising how different pubs are in Ireland vs most of the UK.
secfirstmd··on Mullvad Leta: A search engine used in the Mullvad Browser
Lol. Sure. M247 Ltd limited hosts...
secfirstmd··on How to be a -10x Engineer
Well said. I work on engineering stuff but I spend a huge amount of time encouraging people to understand the other parts of the business and their needs.
secfirstmd··on Why are movies so dark these days?
I'm gonna be honest. I still think that Star Wars 4/5/6 looks so much more authentic than 7/8/9 because it didn't have as much CGI ability so the use of models etc was more important.

1/2/3 is the worse examples as the CGI quality was particularly bad. Let's not even start about Jar Jar.

secfirstmd··on British government mocked for advertising head of cyber role with £57K salary
Agreed. I lived in London and moved back to Dublin. Even with the high costs in Ireland and taxes, tech salaries are now moving way ahead of London (which is not a cheap city).
secfirstmd··on Time to end the speed limit in US airspace?
I have flown out of there recently and this would have been terrible advice. Really bad queues for bag drop and security.
secfirstmd··on AI Won't Cause Unemployment
Unfortunately AI is far more likely to make global conflict worse.
secfirstmd··on Blowing holes in Seymour Hersh’s pipe dream
Easily. It's one of their most used functions.
secfirstmd··on GPT-3 Honeypot
I'm confused a little by this. I get that AI can be useful in making honeypots seem more real but the documentation doesn't explain what exactly the GPT-3 is adding?
secfirstmd··on Ask HN: What's something that HN has been wrong about?
It's an incredible plane and only going to get better.

Also a great budget to bury black projects...

secfirstmd··on Stripe clawed back pension contributions after staff cuts
No it's not standard practice. It's done in some companies but not that many. For those firms that do this, most waive it for redundancies.
secfirstmd··on Meta CTO told employees higher headcount resulted in 'untenable' slow movement
You think code or manage is the only way a social media company works? What about content policy? What about sales (you know, the thing that lays the bills)?
secfirstmd··on Safe deposit boxes aren’t safe (2019)
I used to work around there. Couldn't agree more. On two different occasions over the course of a year I spotted robberies about to occur and reported them to the police. On one other occasion I spotted a surveillance team following individuals there. No way in hell would I wanna work in those stores. Not worth it.
secfirstmd··on Handwritten complaint to the court by alleged CIA Vault 7 leaker
Worth remembering that this despite people's opinions. This person continues to be innocent until they are proven guilty. They may even actually be innocent. However unlikely it may sound.
secfirstmd··on Ask HN: Anyone else suffering from tinnitus?
Hey there is an Irish company doing some pretty amazing work on Tinnitus relief. You should take a look at their product here https://www.lios-group.com/soundrelief
secfirstmd··on Discuss HN: Software Careers Post ChatGPT+
I think documentation will be one of the first places we see it used a lot. I say this because today I'm writing documentation about how to use sprints, Jira and projects within our company today. I've written over 50 percent with the help of ChatGPT. Lets me focus on the less boring written stuff.
secfirstmd··on Which companies are protecting your DMs with default end-to-end encryption
I'm still amazed that Twitter acqi-hired Moxie and Whisper Systems years before everyone else...yet it still doesn't have e2e.
secfirstmd··on LastPass: Notice of Security Incident
Israel also very blatantly does it.

The US does it also. Can't remember the exact number but contracts above 150 million can occasionally be "helped along" by national level assets.

secfirstmd··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
Good questions.

So at the moment the advice we give is not country specific. We have slightly different levels depending on risk, threat model and skill. Building a logic to do country by country was something we tried but is incredibly hard.

Our revenue model is based on a few things. We got grants to build the initial version, we also create paid white label versions for organisations that want their own and we do security training and consultancy services.

Regarding NSO Group. Well considering we work every day with journalists and activists, some of whom have been targeted by NSO...to say we despise what NSO does is probably an understatement.

secfirstmd··on Ask HN: Who wants to collaborate?
Hi there.

Seeing as you are in DRC. I've worked on a number of projects there. Maybe you might be interested in checking out an app we made to help NGO/media etc learn about and manage their digital and physical security? Lots of groups on the ground there have used it in situations like kidnap, targeted malware etc.

It's called Umbrella. It's free, opens source, on ios and Android available in many languages. If you are interested, have a look at at https://www.secfirst.org or ping me via the email in my profile! :)
