sds111··on Prominent Investor: Bitcoin Price in Healthy Uptrend for New Rallies
Excerpt:

SegWit2x Cancelled, No Short-Term Uncertainty

...the cancellation of the SegWit2x hard fork eliminated any uncertainty surrounding the mid-term performance of bitcoin and most importantly, eliminated the possibility of a split chain by the end of 2017. As such, many analysts including Mayer, Max Keiser, and Tom Lee have predicted the bitcoin price to achieve the $8,000 mark by the end of this year.

According to a report by Nikkei, 4,500 large-scale stores and merchants already accept bitcoin as a payment method in Japan, including leading retailers, airlines, hotels, and even restaurants. That number is expected to increase by five-fold, to 25,000, by the end of 2017.

sds111··on What happens when you sell your startup?
The buyers rarely understand what they are getting. Because of that they will use different marketing approaches and customer service. The good buyers will be lucky to keep 50% of the customers. Other buyers may decide to take the idea and tangibles such as domain names, and rebuild from scratch. In either case it sure is hard watching your baby get sold off and changed.

Looks fine to me. Dashboard came right up. Also, I have an extension that shows their price constantly and it was changing all day.
sds111··on Ask HN: Would you trust your real work to Google if they can just lock you out?
I'll continue to use Google Drive as a backup, of course. Thankfully, all my computers have LibreOffice.

In the end, I'll just make sure I have multiple copies of all the current files. That's not a bad thing.

PTL I don't have a Chromebook. Those guys could be royally screwed.

sds111··on Feds want cash seized in a raid, so they’re suing the cash
This happens a lot. Just go to PACER and do a search on certain amounts as respondents to civil cases and you will find the cases. Start with a party search like "$40,000" or such, since the numbers will be the respondent name in the case.
sds111··on A 12pt Font Should Be the Same Size Everywhere (2012)
Bill Gates made this same promise when Windows 1 was released. That each monitor and printer would require drivers specific to their model in order that the fonts would be measures in points (or pica) instead of in pixels.

Somehow we ended up with all the drivers for each device even though the original promise has been long forgotten.

We sacrificed the days of the plain printer with Centronix hardware interface, and the versatility of the Unix lpr spooler where you simply sent a stream out to printers containing control codes you knew would work with your device, like carriage return and linefeed. Then later the Calcomp and HPGL codes.

And what did we gain for that trade?

I think this link is great, because someone is clearly remembering the promise. Upvote for that.

sds111··on Ask: How many people are logged in here right now?
It would be cool to see how many people are logged in here right now, next to my login name. And maybe a click on it to pop down a widget showing a pie-chart breakdown by country. It surely changes based on the time of day around the world.

sds111··on It's hard to understand U.S. drug policy when prescription opiates are legal
From personal experience I can say that when you are post-op and need them, opiates are the only answer sometimes. During pain, addiction potential is very low.

The problem comes when doctors continue to simply prescribe the drugs without including a pain management specialist to continually monitor their usage.

sds111··on Ask HN: What is the most amazing python script you ever wrote to save your time?
I have data-collection systems that bring in readings around a solar power plant. It all comes in as CSV files. So I use Python to collect that data and archive the data with files named by the day's data, at midnight. Then another Python program collects all the archived files from each system and brings it into another hard-drive-based system where all the files named by the same date are collected together. It then runs gnuplot for .png representations of each, and then calls Imagemagick to make montages for each day which include data from each kind of sensor. Love Python.
sds111··on How Do I Protect DIY Electronics from the Environment?
Everything in the freezer with aromatics will add to the flavors of other things that are not completely sealed. Last thing you want is a frozen pizza to taste like silicone glue.
sds111··on Why do programming languages suck at math?
Simply put: Out compilers and interpreters force us humans to think more like the underlying machines, rather than vice-versa. It is ass-backwards. We should absolutely demand that our tools help the computers under what we want and not the other way around.

It works fine for programming Arduino chips, and can access my NAS server to offset its tiny hard drive.
