sdo72··on Kagi and Wolfram
I have tried Kagi and I don't find anything magical. And I see a lot of testaments saying how good Kagi is, and most of them aren't in any specific comparison.
sdo72··on Kagi and Wolfram
Why am I starting to see a lot of promotional statements within HN? Are there any bot or some army of manual labor around?
sdo72··on Google Fiber - 20 Gig + Wi-Fi 7 will be available to select customers
I doubt very much, GFiber has been around here long in those cities (limited area) too, but for some reason, it has never tried to expand into other cities nearby. I think Google's goal is to try to make the market more competitive, it doesn't try to take over other ISPs.
sdo72··on Google Fiber - 20 Gig + Wi-Fi 7 will be available to select customers
I'm not sure if this pushes competitors or not. Apparently nothing is done with the internet speed at our area. I live in Anaheim, and I only have 2 options: AT&T (50Mbps max), and Spectrum (100Mbps+). The up speed is still very slow, the down speed is always horrible for both, somewhere around 10Mbps. I can't do multiple video calls at the same time. It's been like this for 10+ years.

Recently I have Tmobile 5G home option and it's a bit better with the up speed, 20-40Mbps. The download speed is flaky, not consistent, somewhere from 50Mbps-250Mbps.

There has never been any fiber option, I wish this exists here, even with 1Gbps option is like heaven.

What a legend, thanks for the summary!
sdo72··on Greg Brockman quits OpenAI
The first Steve was totally irreplaceable, the second Steve was probably arguably the difficult one to be replaceable. Without the first firing, the second Steve would never exist. But then when Apple current ball rolling, he was replaced fine with Tim Cook.
sdo72··on Some Pixel owners still can't dial 911 during an emergency
My Pixel journey from 1 to 6A ended a few months ago, I can't no longer trust Pixel phones. Even though they seem very fast and responsive at first, they're not reliable in many situations like calling 911, getting Wifi signal, receiving calls, ... All of Pixel phones I got since the 1st version have some kind of major issues. I trusted Google with the software and I thought I could continue, but I had to switch to iPhones.
sdo72··on WD refused to answer our questions about its self-wiping SanDisk SSDs
I bought Sandisk SSDs & SD cards. All, literally ALL, of my Sandisk SSDs & SD cards either failed (no longer read) or have significantly degraded performance.
sdo72··on Google Store gave me a locked device as warranty replacement
I'm giving up on Google phones. I kept believing in Google phones but they got me very frustrated. I am moving on to iPhones which have proven to be very reliable. I've been using Google Pixel phones since the first gen, and now with a 6A with many problems (drop calls, no signal, can't receive calls, unresponsive screen sometimes, messages don't send/receive, ...). If someone wants to use Android, Samsung phones have better value, quality, and software support nowadays.
sdo72··on Micromouse: The fastest maze-solving competition [video]
Have you tried running Google Maps & Waze side by side in crowded area with lots of turns?
sdo72··on Micromouse: The fastest maze-solving competition [video]
I wish the idea of shortest distance isn't always the fastest or most convenient distance. I hope Google Maps can do this. I get frustrated that it keep giving shortest distance with lots of turns. Does anyone know?
sdo72··on The Vietnamese military has an actual troll army and Facebook is its weapon
Yes, the order of power is correct. However, I think he is a bit different since he is seen as the #1 candidate to be succeeding the Party Secretary position in the near future.
sdo72··on It looks like GPT-4-32k is rolling out
32k tokens, 3/4 of 32k is 24k words, each page average is 500 or 0.5k words, so that's basically 24k / .5k = 24 x 2 =~48 pages.
sdo72··on Universal flu vaccine against all known subtypes takes promising first steps
I get chills, fever, aches, and sometimes headaches. Those are flu viruses.
sdo72··on Universal flu vaccine against all known subtypes takes promising first steps
I get flu vaccines yearly, and every time I still get sick. My kids got the vaccine this year, and all of them got sick because of the flu, 3 times. I really don't know if the flu vaccine does anything, but it definitely gives me lots of doubts.

Then we had a family member who got very sick a month or two ago because of the flu, he was sent to ER, ICU, and eventually didn't make it. That sent a shock wave to our family. He planned to get the flu vaccine a bit later but got sick right before.

Please get vaccinated, if it doesn't work well, it may give us the second chance to survive.

sdo72··on Mercedes-Benz to introduce acceleration subscription fee
I'm not sure how they come up with the idea, you buy it but you actually don't own it.

I can't imagine if Apple sells us an iPhone with 3 cameras, and we have to pay 3 different subscription tiers to access to each of them.

sdo72··on ‘Anti-hunger’ molecule forms after exercise, scientists discover
This is what I do all the time when controlling my weight, going through long fasting periods. I know for the fact that when being active even with 10-15 mins jog, I'm more insulin sensitive and it staves off my hunger immediately.
sdo72··on “Amateur” programmer fought cancer with 50 Nvidia Geforce 1080Ti
Thank you for doing this, you deserve a superhero badge! It's very inspirational.
sdo72··on Why I left Google: work-life balance
I really don't understand the author's points. The main point is "work-life balance", but these don't seem to make sense:

+ enough salary to pay my bills

+ I work more hours" and even "on the weekend now"

+ enough equity

All of these are actually worse or much lower chance of being better compared to a job at Google.

sdo72··on Why do you waste so much time on the internet?
I think the internet just feeds what most people want or our minds want. It can be in a form of happiness, agreement, entertainment, etc... It's just part of spending time on things that we like to do. It may be considered as wasteful to some, but may not since that's what we want.

There are many people who have tried to quit and eventually gotten back because life out there may be boring, at least to their mind temporarily.

Until there're some serious conditions that cripple our physical bodies, then we consider some changes.

I think it's all a part of living things. We don't normally say "why does human waste so much time on earth?"

sdo72··on I employed a California resident, so now I’m subject to its regulations
When I had my startup with my partner in Seattle, and I was in California, I always had to pay this. Our accountant was aware of these things.

Maybe getting an accountant or a financial adviser would help in situations like this.

sdo72··on iFixit and Google Are Launching a Genuine Pixel Parts Program
This looks like a PR stunt for the Right to Repair. Google phones are very difficult to fix and they break easily when fixing. Screens and parts easily break when open. I have failed twice with Pixel phones and the cost to replace those are quite expensive.

iPhones on the other hand are easier to open and replace parts even though Apple mostly doesn't allow 3rd party parts.

sdo72··on Apple Event March 8, 2022
I like small phones, and the SE was one of my choices up until recently. I thought I was going to wait for the iphone 14 mini but it doesn't seem to happen. So I decided to bite on the iPhone 13 mini. So far it's better than the SE 2nd I've been using since the release.

The 13 mini is a bit smaller, the battery is significantly better, the camera is also a lot better and the portrait is available to mostly everything (not just a human face for the SE). It has all the good things I've been wanting. The only thing missing is the finger print reader, but the iOS 15.4 allows us to use with a mask on. So far the FaceID seems accurate and convenient most of the time.

If you're using an SE 2nd, consider a 12 mini or 13 mini.

sdo72··on The state of burnout in tech, 2022 edition [pdf]
This list has everything I face as well. Even the best working job was with a tiny company which was my own and my partner. I see almost everyone is forced to lie in the corp world. Corp world like people to lie.

The thought of switching career came to me a few times after my startup but quickly died because those careers can't never meet the decent salary to support my life and my family, and I've been living quite frugal already, nowhere near luxurious.

sdo72··on Zain Nadella, Satya Nadella's son, dies at 26
I'm in the same boat. I remind myself everyday, I called my parents at least once or twice a week for the last 20 years.

Every time I'm mad at my daughters in the morning before taking them to school, and I always have the thought what if I don't see them after that, then I forget about my anger, hug them tight, and would say I love them so much.

I can't imagine the pain losing a child. Every time reading again about the Sandy Hook, I tear up. One of the dads couldn't bear the emotional pain, he ended his own life.

Please be kind to others, we're all human and we happen to be on this same journey on earth.

sdo72··on Microsoft posts its own teardown and repair video for the Surface Laptop SE
I think kids definitely can fix their own laptops if they're theirs.

In this case, the school would prohibit the kids to open or attempt fixing any of the laptop. And why kids should even attempt fixing it? They can turn it in to get a "new" laptop. Thus, this doesn't happen.

sdo72··on Microsoft posts its own teardown and repair video for the Surface Laptop SE
See my other comment above.

Hiring a part-time technician to fix the hardware isn't cheap. It's probably cheaper to outsource it to a 3rd party or even sell away the laptop and buy a new one. It doesn't make economic senes to have a technician to fix a $250 laptop.

sdo72··on Microsoft posts its own teardown and repair video for the Surface Laptop SE
I doubt that the school IT people would attempt to fix it. That's a different job. I haven't heard a school IT person even attempts to replace a laptop battery. Any attempt fixing it has a good amount of risk of breaking the laptops. Hence, they school would have to outsource or rely on a 3rd party to fix and the cost would become even higher.
sdo72··on Microsoft posts its own teardown and repair video for the Surface Laptop SE
I'm not sure how this would help people to fix this device as the laptop is being sold only to educational entities in bulk. Normal users won't be able to buy. Most people can't fix these since they belong to schools and the schools probably won't spend money on fixing these.
