sdizdar··on The Companies Worth Less Than Facebook
Market cap / valuation comparison is only meaningful if you compare companies in the same industry. For example, priceline.com has market cap of about $21B. In that respect, facebook valuation is not so high.
sdizdar··on Yes, browsers do cache SSL resources, so please use Google's CDN
Question: The article says that if a resource is accessed as 'http:' and then as 'https:', then the second access will not hit the cache. Is that true? Thanks.
sdizdar··on [dead]
I'm not sure if you know, but Bulgaria is in Balkans. And sane people are thrown in the loony bin (or just killed) if they talk too much.

Bulgaria is considered the most corrupt country in the 27-member European Union. For example, just recently, Asen Drumev, former head of the State Agricultural Fund, was sentenced to four years in prison for embezzling $34 million worth of EU assistance (and as far I know he was just a sacrifice lamb). And crime journalist Bobbie Tsankov was killed "execution syle" last June.

Of course, Bulgaria pledged to work harder at "combating high-level corruption and organised crime" in response to renewed criticism from the European Commission (http://www.ft.com/cms/s/0/01d19cdc-942a-11df-a3fe-00144feab4...).

sdizdar··on W3Fools - A W3Schools Intervention
I went thru http://w3fools.com/#htmlsucks and errors reported there are very minor (I guess using Facebook API documentation trained me to be more forgiving).

The w3school is a perfect for what it is. Is it reference? No - they don't claim to be. Is it school for beginners? Yes - and the excellent school. The organization is very good, there are examples, etc.

Can somebody make better school which is wiki based? Yes.

sdizdar··on Reasons to Open a Chinese Bank Account
Investing in rubles ops.. yuans is very interesting proposition. Especially when inflation rate is skyrocketing and there is housing bubble of enourmous proportion. And China's economy is very much connected to US economy: if dollar collapses and yuans unpeggs, China's economy will suffer.

As always, great advice from WSJ: I will have one million dollar in my account in 5 years - if I start with two millions.

sdizdar··on Why you should never, ever use two spaces after a period
I had never heard of the 2 space rule until I moved to the US, so this is one of cultural things. I believe "single space" rule is prevalent is Europe and India.

This anyway points that 2 space rule is not "right way" since significant portion of the world (maybe majority of your customers) will think it is weird and be confused about it. The "1 space rule" is more neutral.

sdizdar··on What if Flickr fails?
You can copy photosets from Flickr to Facebook or Picasa using http://showzey.com. It manual process now (photset by photoset). I wonder if enough people are interested in paid option for continuously sync between these services?
sdizdar··on Can Google Get Its Mojo Back?
I don't think Google is loosing mojo. But I do see one problem: Google revenue is all connected to search, and the next disruptive innovation seems to be in area of search (I personally, I'm not satisfied with quality of google search).

Or maybe ad $$ will move from search advertising to something similar to GroupOn.

sdizdar··on VLC for iOS Pulled from the App Store
I would like to understand something here. As far as I was explained by experts (I'm not a lawyer) GPL license does not allow to publish software on closed / proprietary platforms controlled by ToS similar to Apple AppStore. My understanding it is not that VLC on iOS is breaking AppStore ToS but GPL license which is very restrictive when you release something based on it but it is not open sourced.

Am I wrong here?

sdizdar··on Engineering management at Facebook
There is actually a problem when organizations are focusing too much on tools.

In order to efficiently address a disruptive innovation, a corporations need to change their processes and since tools are connected to processes, these good tools make that change even harder.

Yes, it good to have good tools for developing the current product, but organization needs to be ready to eliminate internal tools without hesitations.

sdizdar··on Engineering management at Facebook
With all due respect to Facebook and many great engineers at Facebook, if you look at quality of Facebook API ( documentation, bugs, reliability, compatibility), I don't think they followed "hiring the best" in the division working on Facebook API.
sdizdar··on Google’s decreasingly useful, spam-filled web search
I think the very first thing is to try to prevent malicious sites to be on the first page. For example, try searching for "lawsuit employment rejection". The very first hit is: jaysgrafx.com/char-tritan-energy-power-com-employment-san-marcos-tx-job/. Do not click on it (it forwards you 84bf4ada.logout3.cz.cc/).
sdizdar··on Why Your Employees Are Losing Motivation
True, but I think the most important part is missing: challenge and growth. My first boss had mantra: Grow or Go.

There is a misunderstanding that only top performers want to grow. Actually, all team members want to grow, but in different areas and at different pace.

In other words, good manager must always ensure that team members are challenged and they have feeling of actual growth and accomplishments.

I believe that "growth" is the most neglected part. And I think it is most neglected part because majority of companies have only two "growth paths": management and individual contributors while majority of people don't nicely fit into these categories.

sdizdar··on Why are restaurant web sites so bad?
I spent some time doing customer development for my http://wall.si project, so I have some experience with this.

The top four concerns for restaurants are: personnel, personnel, personnel, and personnel.

Cool looking web site is really peripheral for many restaurants. Mobile support .. What?

sdizdar··on Take a paycut to work at a startup
As far I understands and I was told by some successful entrepreneurs that startups must not assume that it can build a great team by paying them less.

Actually, when growing the team, startups must assume that they will pay more than competitors.

Paycut is ok if it is augmented with generous equity (really generous): which basically means first couple of employees. And startups should treat these early employees (which took paycut) as important investors and co-founders.

sdizdar··on How to (In)validate Your Startup Idea
COLD email 20 of them and offer to pay THEM to use your product if they are willing to offer some feedback.

If anybody responds, tell them that the offer is oversubscribed and that it is no longer available.

I wonder what is wrong with saying just "Hi, I would like to get feedback about project X.". Would that way have the same affect?

I'm asking that just becasue I try to follow an old proverb (not sure if translation to English is correct): if you have a smallest doubt about whether to lie or not, don't lie.

(no, I'm not good with the above rule, but at least helped me while dating and now in marriage)

sdizdar··on Software Patents Shut Down RunwayFinder
I believe that FlightPrep has a valid business plan. They have patent in order to prevent commoditization (i.e., giving away things for free) of their market. So they sue all free providers and if there is somebody with real money (like Jeppesen) they understand they cannot go after them.

I think this something each copmany should do when entering a niche market which can be easily commoditized.

sdizdar··on Yahoo Reduces Staff By 4 Percent; Hands Out Pink Slips To Over 500 Employees
Any ex Yahoo'ers from SF Bay Area interested in joining us to work on http://cloudHQ.net?
sdizdar··on Visa.com Now Also Down Under DDoS
Both Visa and MasterCard are down. This just shows how fragile the internet is and how 'easy' is to shut down the entire economy and system.

The point is that coordinated attack by terrorists or plain old criminals can cripple the entire world's economy and there is no easy and effective way to prevent it.

We do need to think about how internet can be re-organized to be 100% distributed system to prevent this of happening again.

sdizdar··on Salesforce Buys Heroku (YC W08) For $212 Million In Cash
Very very good news for Heroku employees and investors. I also hope that Amazon will start bidding war.

However, knowing Salesforce (and fact that they have many very very big enemies in this business) I'm concern about future of Heroku offering in the current form. As far as I know, Salesforce is not a hacker company - they remind me a little of Yahoo! (product managers are running the show). And, don't get me wrong, in this case, not being a "hacker company" is a good thing. But, I assume that Heroku will be transformed to be much profitable and target bigger margin businesses.

sdizdar··on Learn Prolog now
For small programs you are probably right.

However, the key of learning Prolog to teach you how to expresses the logic of a program/system without describing its control flow. Basically to describe what the program or system should accomplish (which rules govern the program or system) without thinking how these things will be implemented and executed (it will just happen). This kinda of thinking can be very powerful tool when designing complex systems and products.

sdizdar··on Learn Prolog now
Actually, one of the best book for Prolog is book written by my professor Ivan Bratko: http://www.amazon.com/Prolog-Programming-Artificial-Intellig...

We had to write Pascal interpreter in Prolog - that was an experience. I strongly suggest to everybody to try Prolog - then you will understand why it is good idea to use declarative languages as much as possible when building product (including SQL).

sdizdar··on Systems Programmers Relax - Most Programming Advice Isn't For You
I think MVP does not mean "crappy product". MVP means just a version of product (which is working, tested, etc.) which can collect the maximum amount of validated learning with the least effort. In other words, my understanding is that MVP should cover main use case in order to validate if that is what your potential customers want (as my mentor was saying "it must not suck"). So, in your example, if scaling up to 100TB is the key value proposition then you have to have it. On the other hand, CLI, nice GUI, nice installation, etc. are not probably part of your MVP.
sdizdar··on Google has a problem retaining great engineers? Bullcrap.
The following sentence is very not true and quite misleading:

> Similarly, you don’t work on great technology at a startup. .. They are about business model discovery...

If that is true, then why do technology startups exist at all? Isn't discovering business model very much connected to discovering new technologies (new, more efficient ways to solve problems)? In other words, if a technology startup is not planning to invent something, then it not should probably exist in the first place.

It is true there are some Web 2.0 startups which are not about technology at all, but these startups are anyway not looking for great engineers.

sdizdar··on Google and Microsoft Cheat on Slow-Start. Should You?
It seems Linux does not have option to skip slow start and just use receiver's advertised window. Does anybody know where in net/ipv4/tcp.c this should be set?
sdizdar··on Ask HN: Why does no one talk about working or interviewing for Oracle?
True (btw, BEA is ORCL now).

What is definition of hacker in this context? Web 2.0 / javascript developer? Or self-learned developer?

sdizdar··on Ask HN: Why does no one talk about working or interviewing for Oracle?
These are good points. "What was the last Oracle innovation you heard about?" - that is very good question. It is hard to believe that company with $26B (4x more than Google) in sales has no innovation.

Could it be that since oracle inventions are mainly in enterprise space and these technologies are not generally available to consumers, so they are never publicized not discussed in venues blogs and forums like this? You can only can see ad in WSJ and that is the end of the story.

sdizdar··on Ask HN: Why do the collaboration websites always fail?
I think the reason is that internet is full of trolls and if you don't put significant effort into making community / collaboration clean and vibrant then the collaboration site is destined to fail.

For example, compare Quora and Yahoo! Answers. I don't thing Quora is successful because they have very good UI (it does not hurt), I think they are successful becasue they are very serious about making they site clean and without trolls. On other hand, Yahoo! Answers is 'troll heaven'.

sdizdar··on Ask HN: Why does no one talk about working or interviewing for Oracle?
I would like to understand the following:

Why do you think Oracle does boring stuff? For example, both Oracle and Google work hard to make very scalable and highly available systems - but somehow Oracle is boring while Google is exciting.

You mention "they're evil". Why do you think Oracle is evil? Why do you think Oracle is more evil than Facebook, Apple, or Google?

sdizdar··on Why we’re really happy with AppEngine (and not going anywhere else)
The main point of this article is how GEA can scale very very fast... Basically, it sounds like: "you can win a lottery too, and GAE is there to scale in case you win a lottery".

Of course, installing everything on more expensive EC2/rackspace machine / mysql service would take half of a day, ....

Using heroku would be way more easier, but heroku is not so cool and hippie as Google.
