sdan··on Merino Wool: The Good, the Bad, and the Not-So-Stylish
A bit tangential but Patagonia's Cool Merino Shirt is probably top 3 in shirts/long sleeve apparel I've ever worn

Mostly recycled merino wool and some polyester make it extremely soft and breathable

sdan··on Seattle could become the first city to ban caste discrimination
Yeah this is very true. I'm Indian born in the Bay Area and oddly enough there's entire apartment communities that end up being 95% indian families because of costs/school districts. This translates to housing too (Mountain House, San Ramon) though it typically has nothing to do with caste, just circumstance.
sdan··on Self hosting in 2023
I was running a couple million page views/mo on a cluster of raspberry pis in my parents home a few years back. After some disruptions on my family's network I decided to setup a Wireguard VPN with Docker Swarm and a GCP instance to essentially route from GCP IP address -> Raspberry pi cluster such that my IP wouldn't get leaked and didn't have to worry about dynamic IP addresses

Very hard to do and finicky to setup but at the time was suitable for my needs

sdan··on DreamFusion: Text-to-3D using 2D Diffusion

as with a majority of ML research

sdan··on Starlink for RVs
I got off the waitlist and live in the bay area -- possibly im not doing something right or Starlink is extremely spotty; it gets "offline" most of the time and very rarely gets online so I can actually use it. After 4 months of unuse I canceled my the $99/mo subscription which is more than the internet I actually pay for

It's good for rural areas it seems.

sdan··on YC W22 Stablegains is being sued for losing $42M in funds from 4878 customers
They were skimming yield(in return of a nice UI) on a risky yield asset with poor disclaimers and extremely reckless risk management systems

sdan··on MariaDB to go public at $672M valuation
SPAC sponsors and mariadb investors get to cashout massively, while the SPAC drops 70% in the next year. A tale as old as time.
sdan··on MariaDB to go public at $672M valuation
SPAC sponsors get essentially a free money trade when they merge with a company; usually this results in merging with sub-par companies with bad numbers (no revenue or even product usually) so investors can cash out massively without the company really needing to succeed at all

Case in point: most SPACs have fallen anywhere from 50-70% (evtol/lidar/battery companies) over the past year due to the fact that most don't have either a working product or poor numbers

sdan··on LastPass users warned their master passwords are compromised
obligatory: I use passwordstore.org by Jason A. Donenfeld and its local, relatively easy to use, works with git, and free. Too niche for hackers to take interest I hope.

Yeah I ordered two maxxed out macs for my dad and I. Price not an issue when you factor in opportunity cost.

Everything and more I need. Otherwise would need to fork up $20k for a mac pro

sdan··on Amazon denies report of accepting Bitcoin as payment
What's funny is that this rumor started as a joke on Twitter, was picked up by some UK newspaper (iirc) and then spread through the media

sdan··on Do nothing (2020)
As someone who's gone through this recently, I don't think this is the best advice

Better to over-communicate and let others know what you're up to than to stay silent and do nothing

sdan··on Show HN: Unlimited, free intraday stock data API
That's highly unlikely. Data brokers that lend out data to you from exchanges make sure end users are just retail and make you sign a bunch of forms just to access basic lit pool data.

sdan··on How often do people copy and paste from Stack Overflow?
I stopped relying SO and started relying heavily on https://grep.app and Github search. Most of the time the code actually works and there's good references on how to structure things.
sdan··on Big SPAC deals don’t need big SPACs
TLDR: You need PIPE investors. Though with the recent correction, its harder to get, so it seems SPACs are trying to find companies they can merge w/o the need for PIPE to fill the rest.

Lucid Motors at one point was valued at 70b without a single car on the road. And although Churchhill Capital 4 raised 1b, $24 billion was filled by PIPE investors iirc.
