scrrr··on We lost the war. Welcome to the world of tomorrow (2006)
I believe in fundamentals. Just don't post anything online, unless you're certain you want to. Do not post pictures. Don't use social networks and cloud services. Your life won't get THAT much harder if Google Maps cannot guess which coffee shop you mean immediately.
scrrr··on Who Has Your Back 2014: Protecting Your Data From Government Requests
(with a little bit of sarcasm:)

Oh I guess then it's safe to put my data on the American cloud again.

Just kidding, wouldn't do it. And neither should you.

It's sad, but as a foreigner I don't see that, regarding government policies, anything at all has changed since Snowden went public. I have nothing against the USA taking various leadership roles. Biggest democracy, newest technology etc, but since early 2000s it seems they are doing a bad job in many areas.

No thanks.

scrrr··on Young people 'feel they have nothing to live for'
That's why I wonder why some European countries have voted more right-wing parties. [1] (Most of the voters being employees, too.) More capitalism and less welfare cannot be the solution, because aside from the moral obligations [2] there's a real danger of social and economical instability.

Sure, you can throw lots of police at demonstrators, but for one there will be more and more people who no longer can afford to buy your iPhones, and secondly, at some point it might get really ugly.

I am blessed to live in a safe place and earn a lot of money. But I do feel we need to put a part of it aside for direct help of the unemployed folks, especially the young, and for programs to tackle these problems.

And if we don't it will could turn out to be a bad century. For all of us.

[1] I speculate they are exploiting the egoism that's in all of us for their campaigns.

[2] If you don't think there are any, think about how much about your own life is the result of chance, and how it easily might be the other way round. For example you being a poor immigrant in a foreign country.

scrrr··on Dropbox Webhooks
Nope. I won't be back. Using unison now. Syncthing looks nice, too.
scrrr··on Syncthing: Open Source Dropbox and BitTorrent Sync Replacement
Is there a paper / doc explaining, how the synchronisation works in detail?
scrrr··on Adblock Plus for Safari released
Is it possible to block all that crap using the hosts file? It would block on all browsers that way. Or would it be way too long?
scrrr··on Snowden: Why hasn’t DNI Clapper been punished for lying to Congress?
Yep, it's likely they have some "public opinion making" going on. After all psychology teaches us that people look to other people first to find out what to think and do. These guys spoiled the Internet.
scrrr··on Snowden: Why hasn’t DNI Clapper been punished for lying to Congress?
Yeah but come on, it's happening.
scrrr··on Skype group video calling becomes free
Of course. They should suffer the loss of ALL their users if you ask me. If anyone here is still using Skype, I wonder what kind of community this is and what kind of future we are building..
scrrr··on Ask HN: Recommendation for email provider?
In principle you are right. But there's weird errors then and now, which I don't want to investigate. There's annoyance with having self-signed certificates. Adding new users. Not to mention spam and, so far not an issue, getting blacklisted for some reason.

Basically, there's some things I want to do myself, other's I can outsource.

scrrr··on Show HN: My new JavaScript MVC framework
First impression after reading across the docs: Compact, fast, seems to contain most important things. I like it.
scrrr··on Apple iPhone Will Fail in a Late, Defensive Move (2007)
Another example that shows that humans are not very good at predicting the future.
scrrr··on Zethos – Speed reading tool in 1 kb
I want to see a decent rendition of Facebook that was made in just a few hours. ;)
scrrr··on Popcorn Time Is So Good at Movie Piracy, It’s Scary
Shouldn't somebody at time.com be charged with crime for posting a link to an infringing site? ;)
scrrr··on Kill the Snowden interview, congressman tells SXSW
"Pompeo, R-Kan., said he was "deeply troubled" by the scheduled video appearance of Snowden" - yeah I'm sure he can't sleep at night.

Besides, don't US politicians at some point vow to protect freedom of speech?

scrrr··on 360 million newly stolen credentials on black market
It's sensible to assume that everything you ever put into the cloud can be leaked at any moment. So act accordingly.
scrrr··on Blackphone
If it made it harder for non-state adversaries to create profiles about you, it would still be a good thing. I don't want the Gov. to know about my private life. But neither do I want any search engine, online store or ISP to have that data.

So even though you are right, it's still better to choose a safer technology.

scrrr··on [dead]
did what?
scrrr··on [dead]
Isn't the president democratically elected though? heh
scrrr··on Why I Dropped Out Of YC
Yep. Perhaps I should write a long article about my 1 dollar notebook I bought at a subway station. And the 1 dollar pen. It came without a plastic wrapping and serves me well!

People are brandwashed.

scrrr··on Tell HN: My Brother Died Last Week. His Death Will Not Be In Vain
This was well written. It also sounds like suicide and I can't imagine how one must feel to do such a thing. But it reminds me that despite all cool toys and great achievements, what really matters in this life is others we can talk to and rely on. And this shouldn't only include friends and family but society as a whole.
scrrr··on The NSA’s Secret Role in the U.S. Assassination Program
This is all very depressing.

OT: Same picture used in FAZ-article in 2012 [1]. Can you search stockphoto dot com for "Predator drone"?

scrrr··on Show HN: I made an app that listens for a rapper's songs and raps along in sync
Off topic, but do TNW know that that page is impossible to scroll? (Safari, brand-new MBP)
scrrr··on Put.io
If you're downloading copyrighted movies, it seems to be a slightly silly idea to supply anyone with a list. And your payment information.
scrrr··on Edward Snowden nominated for Nobel peace prize
Who says it's the 'most-influential' prize?
scrrr··on How Do You Teach Kids the Value of Money? (2006)
I like small details when reading stories. Even if unimportant, it's fine to put it there.
scrrr··on TrueCrypt Master Key Extraction And Volume Identification
By the way, this is exactly why the NSA will not catch many terrorists. You can always hide data and you can always hide communication (which is just data written and read by two different endpoints).
scrrr··on Snapchat Says Sorry for Data Breach, Updates Apps With Find Friends Opt-Out
So how does an apology make anything better?
scrrr··on Rap Genius is Back on Google
I own many old Vinyl records and often they come with the lyrics for all the songs on them. That's enough for me. I don't need funny annotations.

So, while Rap Genius is a cool website, I wouldn't say that all the other lyrics websites suck.

scrrr··on Facebook Is Using Your Profile to Track Global Urban Migration Trends
And their users are giving them their data for free, in exchange for being able to get a daily does of "Like"-events, so that we can feel validated I guess?
